  1. Just saw 'em in Columbus and all I can say is Wow, Z's sure come a loooooong way. From the terrified novice at SXSW to (almost) a seasoned performer who actually appears to be enjoying herself (jumping around, clapping). Engaging, even. And the way she belted on "I Put A Spell On You"! Of course, she is coming off her first high-profile bomb with The Happening. Perhaps that spurred her to work on her stage persona. Or perhaps I'm being a cynical a-hole.
  2. After watching the tape, I have to revise my earlier critique. Nels, of all people (you know, the way-to-cool jazz guy) looked and sounded like he was really into it! Probably had a couple Buds beforehand, which should be a requirement. Well done!
  3. I thought this might have been one of those dreaded "Fancy a drink" moments.
  4. Well, three NL teams finished in first place last year, and none went to the World Series.
  5. I like him a lot. Skip Caray dies; spent three-plus decades calling Braves games ESPN.com news services Broadcaster Skip Caray, who was in his 33rd season of calling Atlanta Braves games, died in his sleep Sunday at his Atlanta home. Caray, the son of former Hall of Fame play-by-play announcer Harry Caray, had several ailments in the last year but had recovered enough to continue calling Braves home games at Turner Field. He would have been 69 on Aug. 12. "Our baseball community has lost a legend today," Braves president John Schuerholz said. "The Braves family and Braves fans every

  7. Did I miss this, or was it just released? From Wilco HQ email: For the baseball fans among you, Jeff Tweedy will be throwing out the first pitch at Wrigley Field on Sunday and the band will lead the crowd in "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" during the 7th inning stretch. It's the Cubs vs. Pirates... check your local cable television listings or listen in on WGN or Mlb.com. Game time is 1:20pm Central. I've always thought they should have retired the whole celeb. worble-along after Harry died, but I'd be interested to hear this. Game is on WGN cable. Just saw a neat exhibit at the Rock
  8. McCain's campaign strategy: Obama's sooooo ! That's about it.
  9. Finally! A man of vision! Meanwhile, what ever happened to this guy: Keeping America competitive requires affordable energy. And here we have a serious problem: America is addicted to oil, which is often imported from unstable parts of the world. The best way to break this addiction is through technology. Since 2001, we have spent nearly $10 billion to develop cleaner, cheaper, and more reliable alternative energy sources -- and we are on the threshold of incredible advances. So tonight, I announce the Advanced Energy Initiative -- a 22-percent increase in clean-energy research -- at the
  10. A headline you weren't expecting tonight: Shoppach ties extra-base hit record Indians catcher hits three doubles, two homers against Tigers Associated Press CLEVELAND -- Indians catcher Kelly Shoppach tied a major league record Wednesday night with five extra-base hits -- two home runs and three doubles. Primarily a backup during his career, Shoppach broke loose in the Detroit-Cleveland game that was tied 12-all through nine innings. Shoppach doubled and scored in the second, third and fifth innings. He hit a two-run homer in the sixth and tied the score at 12 with a one-out solo homer
  11. After the last eight years, there is no way the election is going to be decided by nonsense like this. Right?
  12. Wilco crowd+Neil crowd would be an excellent mix and would create an exciting vibe. Plus as an opener Jeff would be less likely to go into one of his pissy rants about "the talkers." Ohio. If Neil did nothing else, he'd still be a legend, just for that song.
  13. Lovelovelove that piano bit on "I Want The Angel." If I could break through I could be certain But this obsession is like some fiery curtain All the numbers reduced to zero And those who died young, they are my heroes They are my heroes, they took the walk Where the heart made sense and the mind can't talk

  15. Wonder if she retraced her steps over the Alps. Maria von Trapp returns to "Sound of Music" home By Karin Strohecker Thu Jul 24, 6:41 PM ET SALZBURG, Austria (Reuters) - Maria von Trapp has taken a trip down memory lane to see her old family home just before it opens as a new hotel. Staying in the house for the first time since the von Trapps fled the Nazi regime in the late 1930s has been a deeply moving experience for the second-eldest daughter of Baron von Trapp, whose story was made famous by the "Sound of Music" film. "Our whole life is in here, in this house," the 94-year-old tol

  17. The "Boy" on the U2 album appeared in The Commitments as the shy skateboarder. They paid him with candy bars. ("Ma, guess what? A man offered me candy to take off my shirt for pictures!")
