I can't think of a single person who doesn't think Vick is an asshole. You are not only singling out Jordan unfairly, you are using a video you didn't spend the time to watch, and the comments about whether his actions in that video were "petty" or not, as a platform to accuse folks of excusing inexcusable behavior. Which no one here did. I dont think you are taking shit for an unpopular view. I think you are taking shit for missing the point of this thread and turning it into a topic you want to discuss. Which is fine, I suppose, but if you want to talk about the value of sports

Are they really streaming the whole album? I only found a link to stream a brief clip.

I dont know much about women's tennis these days, and I know that Serena has a bad rap when it comes to stuff like this. What she said was particularly bad, but, in a vacuum, I don't think you are being fair. Some players, sometimes, turn their anger on their opponents. Sometimes, in the midst of battle, other players crack. I can't begin to imagine the pressure, the competitiveness, the frustration with an impending loss, etc. Pick a sport and you've got guys throwing Gatorade coolers onto the field, or ACTUALLY fighting someone. Did you see what that kid did at the end of the Oregon/Bo

And what about the joy that Jordan provided to so many? Is it just a guy putting a ball in a hoop if he makes that many people happy?
-
We were? I assume this is directed at my post which couldn't have been further from my point. I take the blame if I was unclear -- my point was that Jordan exists on a different level from a competitiveness/fire/drive level than everyone else. He got to where he was (in large part) because he had to win everything he ever did. If that's the form his speech took, I can't view that as petty, because it's just how he views the world.

I read your back and forth with Bryson on his blog, and I think you are really reaching. He was having some good natured fun. I took the "we really don't care" to mean that he didn't take your critiques too seriously. Would you have preferred that he cried himself to sleep that night?

Michael Jordan is cut from a different cloth than the rest of us, and the rest of the players who have stepped on an NBA court. What he said, and what he feels, doesn't surprise me. And if people think he came off as petty, to me, it's beside the point. He doesn't operate/exist in the world the way I do.

Yeah, I get what you are saying. I guess my point is that neither mix was intended to be listened to on a nice pair of headphones in my apartment in 2009. So, the mono mix is certainly the way it was intended to sound, but it was intended to sound that way through your car stereo. Or your turntable. Back in 1965. And, I think that listening to these mono mixes through my stereo, instead of my headphones, gets me to something that sounds better to these ears. Joss, since you seem to be the mono mix expert, is it weird that the mono mix through my stereo gives off nuance of stereo? In t

I love how the mono cds sound on my stereo, but I agree it sounds a bit weird on my headphones. So, I sort of agree with SirS/VC. The only thing that I can think of to explain it is that my two stereo speakers give a better mono-sounding image in the room, but since my headphones are directly over my ears, it gives this weird "middle of your head" effect that was referenced above. Also, there's a stereo nuance to the mono on my stereo speakers. If that makes any sense. it doesnt sound as if everything is coming right out of the center. I can hear bits on the right and bits on the left.

Interesting that no has mentioned the date revisited
MattZ replied to Good Old Neon's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
I hope you didn't take my statement too harshly. I understand where your frustration came from. Truly. But your thread was quite pointed, and I can understand how someone would react the way that Good Old Neon did, too. No one is right here. No one is wrong either. As an aside, I have been struggling recently with a friend of a friend getting married on 9/11. My initial reaction was to be horrified. And then my second thought was that we all have to live our lives. And 9/11 is a stupid date on a stupid calendar. What better way to respect the horror from that day than by extending a -

Oh, I don't know what I was expecting. Threads pop up around here on the anniversary of D-Day and the anniversary of the invention of the Twinkee for crying out loud. I certainly think it was interesting that no one wanted to discuss 9/11. There's still a lot of people that have a lot of pain related to that day. And, frankly, a lot of people who I would have thought would use the occasion to rail against what this country has looked like since then. A discussion, in any form, was what I was expecting. Maybe some trite cliches throughout like Never Forget, too? It's not a question of w -
I agree it's weird, but if you buy it on vinyl, those three songs end up on the 2nd LP. So, it operates as if it's one album, and then a bonus LP with 3 songs. I wonder if that factored in at all. Probably not, I guess.

we DO have one of these every year you imbeciles!! (I think)

I think many of you (all of you?) missed what I was getting at here with this thread. This was supposed to be a mopey-drown-yourself-in-music-to-get-through-the-day thread. Better that it isn't. I just put on Pavement - CR, CR. Thanks for shaking me out of my funk.

I do all the pleasing with you it's so hard to reason with you woah yeah why do you make me blue? Everyone may have to wait for my 2nd listen before I can offer thoughts on these CDs because I sure can't hear remastered reshmastered over my singing.

Oh man, I am with SirS/VC on this one. I will defend You Know My Name until my dying breath.

Yes, Alan. I didn't mean to suggest that I had settled this issue. Just that a lot of people in this thread have listed lots of bands that are (IMO) better than Big Star. Also, we are focused on the 70s. I can understand if you think Elvis's albums can be lopsided, but his first three albums (i.e., the ones from the 70s)?
-
It shows a third thing, too. Big Star was not the best band of the 70s.
-
gotcha. fair point. It's also a bit weird for the "best of the 70s" to be weighted so heavily towards the "end of the 70s."

Now I remember why I was an independent all those years.

I was underwhelmed with BO last night to be honest. As someone who agrees with him, I found the speech moving and compelling. But the purpose of last night was to convince people who don't agree with him. Or, are skeptical about how he/we will pay for universal health care. And I dont think he did a good job - at all - of addressing the fears of those people. Now, I suppose we can say that the republicans were not there with an open mind. And maybe there was nothing he could say. But even as a Dem, it's hard to comprehend how a politician can pledge to deliver universal health care wit -
When every song on an album is a great song, it's easy to think of a band as an "album band." That being said, I agree that Rubber Soul is when things shifted.

Ira, Georgia, and James have done it again. Man oh man. I don't have words to describe More Stars Than There Are In Heaven. I have to wait to see where the album settles in for me, but right now, it's tied with all their other albums for my favorite.
