  1. Just to get this out of the way, we all agree that "Happy" is Keith's best song, right? I mean, it's not even close, right?
  2. I don't think it's about Keith Richards snorting his father's ashes either. As I said, the sentiment behind the song, is certainly neither forced nor clunky. I just think Jay could have delved into issues of mortality, grief, and sorrow in a way that doesnt cause me to picture Keith Richards snorting his dad's ashes. Just my opinion -- I know that I may be in the minority. The bizarreness of the story (as you admitted) takes away from the song (to me). Not trying to be argumentative. EDIT: Cortez, also, I just re-read my initial post, and I did say that it was about KR/ashes. Another
  3. LittleSavage said everything that I would have said about what makes American Central Dust a head scratcher for me. But then, with a name like LittleSavage, and an avatar like that, of course, we will see eye to eye. And Cortez, I guess the issue for me is that writing a song about snorting your father's ashes feels forced and clunky. Even if Keith Richards actually did it. I read an interview with Jay where he had what seemed like a pretty heartfelt explanation about why he wrote the song. How we all deal with grief, etc. The sentiment is nice, and I can appreciate what Jay was aiming
  4. Beltmann is my favorite poster. Beltmann is the best poster.
  5. I dont know who NSFW is (I can't keep up), but I hope it's a she and I hope that she posts in this thread.
  6. joss, my comment that there is no best way to listen to these albums wasnt an attempt to debate that the stereo mixes were blessed by the Beatles. There is no arguing that point. And people can let that fact sway them as they wish, of course. But you are going to have a hard time convincing me that we should write off how people have been listening to, and loving, the Beatles for the last 40 years. That may an overstatement of what you are saying, but it certainly seems like a fair leap based on what you've been saying here. And for what it is worth, I will be buying the mono box.
  7. There is no best way. No matter what people will tell you.
  8. Would be nice if that douche would tab out 3:11 to 3:21 or so. This douche would appreciate it.
  9. Yeah, I just did some snooping around, and according to New York magazine it was only 1/3 done, and: "...despite the fact that he allegedly 'tidied up the manuscript so that his wife could find it' in his final hours, it was clearly unfinished, definitely not intended for publication..." http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2009/03/will_david_foster_wallace.html The blurb itself is pretty negative, and frankly, New York magazine sucks ass, so I don't care what they say. But this blurb has me a bit worried about what sort of expectations to have going in. I hope, as you say, that Wallac
  10. Interesting. I suppose that I will always wonder if "unfinished" meant that Wallace just wasn't happy with it, and so could not bring himself to call it "final," or if it really was "unfinished." I suppose it's a fine line. Your post, and your evidence, makes me think it's the former, not the latter. Which makes it easier to swallow and sadder all the same. I have a feeling that reading this book, no matter what, is going to be unlike any other experience I've had and ever will have. It will not be easy.
  11. I approach TPK very cautiously. No matter what the reviews say, and no matter how badly I want it to be the final word, the closure, etc., it is still a book that was not finished. I don't know what Wallace would want or would think, but something tells me that he would not have wanted what is about to come, to come.
  12. Hmmm, this is pretty doggone good. Thanks for the heads up.
  13. You know, it's funny, I was actually surprised you didn't have Run of the Mill on yours. It's also scary, I suppose. I don't like that I know that you left it out.
  14. Yes, and in the health insurance scenario, it's the insurance company that would have more out of pocket expenses down the line. Which is why they want to incentivize you to get your checkups. Which is why they cover them. And you know this, I think. Which is why you are confusing me. Bottom line: even if insurance companies are paid to insure against catastrophes down the road (as you say), it is very much in their interest to keep those catastrophic expenses down. And they do this by incentivizing you to get your own personal oil changed as often as possible. So they cover your check
  15. thanks, mountain bed. I can always count on you.
  16. Yo La Tengo - Popular Songs. Ohhhhh yeah.
  17. in no particular order: Every Night - Macca Heart of the Country - Macca The Backseat of my car - Macca Isnt It a Pity - George Run of the Mill - George Beware of Darkness - George My Sweet Lord - George Watching the wheels - John Jealous guy - John Beautiful boy - John
  18. No, that wouldn't make sense either.
  19. ikol, you keep saying that folks should pay for checkups, etc. out of pocket, and that insurance should be insuring against big health events. But from a purely economic perspective, isn't it in the insurance companies' interests to be paying less up front to treati illness before it becomes a catastrophe down the road? Wouldn't the insurance companies be better off (financially) if my chronic illness is caught early instead of treated late? And isn't that why insurance companies cover checkups, etc.? I realize I am simplifying the issue to a large degree.
  20. It's always amusing to me how Republicans feign incredulity at how folks don't let up on Palin. Palin's nomination was arguably the most cynical and depressing calculation by a major political party in our political lifetime. Qualifications be damned. If she can get some of the HRC primary voters and can solidify a base that McCain hadn't been able to convince, WE DON'T CARE. Let's throw the ball downfield and see what happens. EDIT: and now, I am not picking on Palin. I am picking on the Party. Happy?
  21. jakobnicholas, if you don't understand why "it bothers so many people," I am not sure you get the Big Picture either. This woman with no understanding of anything was nominated by the Republican Party to be a heart attack away from being the country's President. The fact that she lost is almost irrelevant.
  22. It took me a long time to get back on the train. Actually, I am still not on it. Can anyone give me the nitty gritty update on how the tour is going? Is the band focused? Breakouts? How is the new stuff? Any comparisons to prior years?
  23. This is the part of the thread where I scream "woooohoooo" from the back of the room.
  24. Would Palin have resigned her position as VP because the press was too "hard" on her and her family?
