Not sure. Nothing specifically, I guess. I read War and Peace last summer so I am not a guy who fears epics. I dont think it's any of the characters or plotlines, specifically. I guess it's just that the book is so incredibly dense and detailed and all over the place. I feel like it can only be properly absorbed if I dedicate my entire being to it over a month (which I can't really do). Oh and James Incandenza's filmography? In a 6 page endnote? And when I finally finished that, and a few pages later, there was another 5 page footnote in a footnote to a footnote?! If it all comes to

I am 100 pages into Infinite Jest right now and I could really use a pep talk. It's peppered with bits of genius on every page, clearly, but holy hell if this book isn't a complete mindfuck. I am guessing that I am right at the point where many folks throw in the towel.

I'll add my traditional entry to these lists that pop up here every once in awhile: that horrible song "what if god was one of us, just a slob like one of us." I have no idea who sings it, and this is probably best for everyone involved.

Where does a Feelies newbie like myself go? I guess most of their stuff is out of print? I bought Only Life this wkd on CD (I guess it's been reissued?). I can't stop playing it. I guess Mercer's recent solo album? Where would I go to find the older albums? And no, there's no excuse for why I am discovering them now. Let's just be glad that it happened now. Right? No, I have no idea how I missed these guys.

Can someone repost these somewhere? Looks like the mp3s in the link above have expired.

Not to mention, cheap credit is what got us in this mess to begin with. Can't get much cheaper than 0.

I know that the chances are probably very slim, but boy, this is going to be a fun thread if the Hanley Ramirez to BOS rumors pan out.

Wilco. Had Jay Bennett not left the band
MattZ replied to Shakespeare In The Alley's topic in Just A Fan
I have no idea, but I'd be willing to bet a nickel that Jeff doesn't hold nearly the grudge against Jay that fans appear to hold against him for their perceptions (real and imagined) of the relationship. I'd also like to be the one to suggest to everyone that the relationship between Jeff and Jay Bennett is/was a little more complicated than could possibly have been depicted by Sam Jones in 1.5 hrs of a documentary. Relationships end. Both sides benefit, both sides are to blame, both sides get over it. Jay was a vital part of the band. Jay is no longer in the band. Life goes on. I am th -
I didnt see the Romo play referenced above, but as it was described, I don't see it as evidence of Phillips losing the team. When Favre would do that in Green Bay (or insert another QB example) he was held up as a gritty leader. The Cowboys fell apart, and Phillips bears some blame, but I am not sure the Romo play is evidence of that.

Notwithstanding the bitter history between these two teams, as a Jets fan, I am happy that Chad had the last laugh. It hurts to be on the sidelines for these playoffs, but Chad deserves it. Good for him.

Interesting. Thanks A-Man. Not sure that I am thrilled with any of the takeaways from that interview/article. I know that he won't show any of the cards from behind the scenes, but you certainly get the sense that the Hampton shows aren't his focus -- for family reasons and his own band. I had sort of hoped that the band was practicing around the clock to come back with a vengeance. Launch a crazy tour, release a CD, etc. At a minimum, learn from the post-hiatus shows and come back tight as ever. Doesn't really sound like there's a ton of focus. That has me worried. And I understand

I am not really sure what we are arguing about here. We all know that games are played on the field, not on paper. On paper, the Yankees are significantly improved over a team that won 89 games last year. As bobbob and I admitted earlier, we both would have said that the Yanks were a virtual lock last year -- given 14 yrs in a row, and the roster they had on paper. We would have been (or were) wrong. Of course we can be wrong again this year. Except that this team is vastly improved over the one from last year. And last year's team won 89 games with an injured Wang, an ancient Mussina,

Norbs made my point for me. They've made the playoffs 14 out of 15 years! And I didnt suggest that they are virtually a lock to win the world series. I just think that the great thing (or bad thing, depending on your viewpoint) about baseball and the 162 game season is that things have a way of working out the way they should over a really long regular season. Now this isn't to suggest anything about the playoffs where a bad bounce is magnified in a short series. But over a long season? I think a team with a rotation of CC, Burnett, Wang, Joba, Pettite(?), etc. is a virtual lock to make
-
Would you have said this same thing at this same time last year? (I don't disagree with you -- they are virtually a lock for the playoffs, but I guess on paper, they are always a lock to make the postseason over 162 games)

Fuck the Yankees.

In 1949 [Joe DiMaggio] became the American League's first player to earn $100,000. Source: http://www.notablebiographies.com/De-Du/Dimaggio-Joe.html 2bobs?

Also, Leo, I have a lot of the same feelings that you have, but I think many of those feelings relate to my youth. The game has always been about money. True, maybe to a lesser degree than today, but it's always been a business. I wonder how much of my nostalgia for the old days is really a nostalgia for my own naivete. There's plenty of amazing baseball being played today -- just as good as ever. Maybe it's me that has changed the most? Lots of people hated Joe D for being the first player to make 100k. (if I remember that story correctly). I am hooked, too.

Let's see what happens with Texeira. It is clear that Boras is great at his job, but I still think he bungled the A-Rod thing last year (even though A-Rod did come out better). Now that ANA has pulled their offer, and BOS is playing hard to get, let's see if Texeira gets an offer even approaching the ANA offer.

Not sure I agree with you. This isn't an indirect handout to the workers and suppliers that would be more efficiently accomplished by giving it to them directly. This is an attempt to prevent a domino effect of unthinkable proportions. You may disagree with it, and it may fail, and it may fail because the industry is so broken it can't be fixed, but even in that scenario, I dont see how the money is wasted. In the short term, at the very least, it is a measure that saves jobs. In the long term, hopefully, it is a measure that is looked back on as the first step in a retooling of the indus

Your question has nothing to do with your statement that precedes it. The answer to your question may be nothing. That doesnt mean the money was flushed/wasted. Taxpayers pay taxes. Taxpayers' jobs are being saved (temporarily). Taxpayers that make supplies for car companies are being saved (temporarily). Money spent isn't money deposited into a black hole.
