Also, if you ever need XP, your macbook will come with "bootcamp", which allows you to install and run Windows natively (via dual-boot) on your computer. So the "having to rebuy all your applications" argument is a moot point. OSX, expecially Leopard, is a much nicer alternative than either XP or vista.

I would definitely go for a macbook (this is the new name for iBooks), but make sure you get a student discount.
