My friend Adam was in charge of the backing band for Ralph "Soul" Jackson and sang one of his songs before he came out. Roscoe's set was a little more square but still really cool. The place was sold out and the love and joy in the room was palpable.

Friday nite will be my official birthday celebration nite. I am 5 years older than Touch and Go.

Good gods, the Riv. I remember the first time I saw them a little over 2 years ago at Schubas. Kyle, I'm with ya completely though on not being crazy about Picaresque. One thing giving me hope is that supposedly that album was written before the Tain, which I love. Colin has mentioned the new one should be more Tain like. I'm not giving up hope yet. The Riv is fine, as long as you have all day to wait out in front for the good spots.

This site has a good selection of what is currently available on vinyl. The stuff they choose to show on that page is pretty high, but you'll see stuff on Matador and other indies isn't nearly as expensive. I guess the indie store is more of a specialty store rather than a standard. As Dr. El pointed out, we do sell a lot of DVDs as well as CDs/LPs. I guess people aren't as comfortable downloading movies yet, and that probably saves us.

We're not going anywhere. Chicago is a city of neighborhoods, and the people in our neighborhood support local businesses. I know that's not the same everywhere though, when I went back to Jacksonville, FL recently-ish there was only one store still open, and they had turned to selling mostly tchochkes. We recently have started selling more used books, but we used wall space that was previously only taken up by posters. So I was mouthing off to a coworker about "STE" and my distaste (AKA punchinfaceatude) for his writing styles, and how he just seems to me to try to pass off opinion as fact and to back up my argument pointed the AMG "biography" on Gram Parsons. I disagree that that statement is in a biography. A customer overheard all of this, and what does she buy? The first 2 Flying Burrito Bros albums. She was checking them out b/c she had just finished the Pamela Des Barres autobiography and then she heard my ranting. I said "I hope you like this, but I don't think Gram is the father of country rock."

Oh if that were the case. I don't actually open EVERY CD we sell, and most of the promos we get are of major label stuff that I wouldn't buy anyway. I spent >$80 on records last week and made the choice to eat spaghetti-os and ramen just to check shit out. The fine folks at Asthmatic Kitty and Secretly Canadian/Jagjaguar and other labels get my money just the same. No, that's not why he's an asshole. The less people who go see Sufjan, the easier it is for people who do like him to get tickets. I hate pretty much all of his writing, it has nothing to do with my agreement on what he has to say, it just makes me sad that so many people base what they buy on his (and other) critics opinions. Of course, I guess most people don't even bother to READ, they just look at the handy star rating on AMG which most times has no correspondance to the review.

No shit, that's the case with all music criticism. Makes him even more of a pantywaist in my book. If you're going to make a bold statement against an artist, don't cop out at the end.
