Monday night - Wilco featured in "How I Met Your Mother." The main character is looking for a Wilco cd at one point. A Wilco tune is played later on in the show. Thought it might be something off Sky Blue Sky but it was Passenger Side. Way to go to pull out the AM track!

I once had a co-worker that had a yellow rubber smiley face ball keychain he was fond of. He left it on his desk one day so we "kidnapped" it and held it for ransom. We sent him notes from the keychain pleading for help and even stuck the keychain in the copy machine, made a copy of the helpless little bugger, and left another ransom note. This went on for about a week. The co-worker would rummage through all of our desks when we weren't there looking for the keychain but he could never find it. The reason he couldn't find it was because we hid it in a coffee cup full of paperclips on hi

The Go! Team - Proof of Youth
Somnambulist replied to Duck-Billed Catechist's topic in Someone Else's Song
If they're sampled or live, I still like that they use horns as part of their collage. Like "The Underdog" on Spoon's new album, the horns make the tune. Even the word/raps/etc. are so down in the mix that they're almost like another instrument. It must be fun working on this type of album with samples, live stuff, etc. I love the way the drums are recorded/sampled. They have that big sound like the Beta Band 3eps and Flaming Lips Soft Bulletin. -
The Go! Team - Proof of Youth

I loved the first one and am digging the second one. I like the use of horns and the fact that they're not afraid of instrumantals. They're like the Beta Band with a dose of Motown and BubbleGum pop. -
Got to love those Beatles tunes that get no credit: Hold Me Tight, All I've Got to Do, Not a Second Time, I'm a Loser, When I Get Home and one of my personal favorites I Don't Want to Spoil the Party (best harmonies in a Beatles tune "I still love her").

Phillip Roth American Pastoral. Started Harry Potter 6 and wasn't feeling in the Harry Potter mood so I went with Roth.

sure this has been done before, but...

He was good on the Flight of the Conchords season finale. Didn't say much but it was fun to see him there. -
I was looking around for videos of Brooklynite Vic Thrill, former Bogmen lead singer Bill Campion, and came across the above clip. It's a short little film (3 minutes) that is quite amusing; however, the punchline at the end is quite surreal. It was intended one way but has a whole new meaning in today's world.

Fred Savage Loves Wilco. Anyone else spotted at the Greek?
Somnambulist replied to Maghtee's topic in Just A Fan
Not at the Greek but I did see Ethan Hawke and Winona Ryder at the same Wilco show at The Town Hall in NYC during the Summerteeth tours. -
Funniest show on TV. It will be great to see where they go from here. Kate Piersen, Darryl Hall ... interesting cameos. Murry...present. I saw a repeat of this past Sunday's episode and it cracked me up to see Jermaine's response in Summer and Rain's apartment when they asked if they want to get whacked off. Dave is the best. Just found this on wikipedia's new quote thingee: http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Flight_of_the...%28TV_Series%29

"Mary Provost" is one of the funnest/sickest songs ever. I also love the tune "I Love the Sound of Breaking Glass". Also, was "When I Write the Book" influenced by/inspiration for Elvis Costello's "Everyday I Write the Book?" Just wondering.

...came after Summerteeth. After AM, Being There and Summerteeth, it needed to be great to be put along side Wilco's previous efforts. I think they did great!

Looking forward to the new Chabon one when I can finally get to the bookstore.

I may be in the minority here but I kind of liked the 80's ELO album Balance of Power. It had two great pop tunes in "Calling America" and "So Serious." I can't remember the album but I like the tune "Twilight" and the robot voiced intro. Yes, the production is somewhat over the top and cheesy but I love that stuff sometimes. Jeff Lynne's only solo record, "Armchair Theatre" is pretty good. I remember reading at the time that he wanted to move away from tracking 88 piano tracks and just get down to a simpler production. For him, "Armchair Theatre" was pretty bare bones.

Another good drone/non-conventional piece is the Green Typewriters tracks on Olivia Tremor Control's Dusk at Cubist Castle. What I like about that one, as well as Less Than You Think, is the drone is followed by a tight pop song. Like you're put into this trance then "wake up" to a nice tune.

Brand New Heavies - Heavy Rhyme Experience album
-
re: nothingsevergoingtostandinmyway (again) Remember when JP would come out and play the tamborine for that tune? It might be cool for a residency someplace to do a full album then play a variety in the encores. You know, have a Summerteeth night, then a Yankee Hotel Foxtrot night, etc. I'm all for messing with the arrangements of some of the older tunes. Dash 7 would be great with this full line up.

Studio version of "the thanks I get" in commercial.
Somnambulist replied to magusmachine's topic in Just A Fan
I read something put out by The Go Team saying they let the ad company have that tune as an olive branch to their record company. Because they are a sample heavy band, they wanted to look good for their record company so their bosses could go to bat for them in obtaining rights for samples. Nothing in this world is black and white. -
Bob & Doug McKenzie 24th anniversary special
Somnambulist replied to Analogman's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
I love the movie within the movie in Strange Brew. "Radiation has made me an enemy of civilization." "So's I spent most of my time looking for beer. Psst. act, act." "Like Charlton Heston in Omega Man. Did you see it? It's a beauty." Such a quotable movie. I remember in high school when we studied Shakespeare, my friends and I finally realized that Strange Brew was a remake of Hamlet. It's actually pretty spot on with the character parallels. -
Looking forward to The Golden Compass. From the preview it looks like they've done a nice job. When I read the book about 10 years ago, I imagined Mrs. Coulter to look like Nicole Kidman. So for me, that was a brilliant bit of casting. There's also a movie being made of The Dark is Rising. Susan Cooper's series was my favorite growing up. It looks like they're rushing this one as they're still filming now and it comes out in September (I think). Hopefully they won't mess it up. The bit of casting for that one I like is Ian McShayne as Merriman Lyon.
