Me too, but it's more an arrangement than a song. Imagine a solo version, kinda repetitive. I'm not sure that disqualifies it by any means. What about YAMF, Wishful Thinking (that's my weepy song), Hummingbird, In a Future Age, How to Fight Loneliness. Okay, I'm bad at calling one thing the best....

Yeah.... sometimes insane brutality and shocking scenes aren't worth it. I find that it's interesting sometimes to let it play out and see what meaning comes out of the extra-sick places my mind typically avoids. I suppose I give books more license than movies. I watched Match Point the other night and covered my eyes during the violent scene. Guess I'm becoming a real mild man. But I digress... One lasting effect of Beatrice and Virgil that I found, was a way to re-approach the despair of the holocaust without couching it in the same terms it has been looked at for the last couple deca

This was an interesting ride for me. I read it in two days and found I couldn't put it down. After I finished it, I was sure that it was devastating, but not sure if it completely blew my mind of if it was kind of horrible. I suppose anything that makes you think so much about it afterward has some inherit merits.

What are the chances the next Wilco album sucks?
lost highway replied to dondoboy's topic in Just A Fan
Good to see folks gearing up to hate something that hasn't been made yet. Being a fan is awesome. I'll take devil's advocate; no one has heard any of it, but based on a subjective laundry list, I'm 86% sure it's better than half their albums- objectively speaking. -
NPR Story here Sounds really cool.

I would think they would make it refined, yet slightly saccharine. Something I might like more when I get older.... in a cup.

This is what makes being a Pearl Jam fan just as interesting as being a Wilco fan. In fact I think both bands first albums stand out as being unusually 'slick' sounding and playing within a set of conventions the bands later turned on their heads. To me what make Vitalogy such an important record is the places where it nailed a chemistry that makes Pearl Jam amazing to me; when they find a really amazing balance between weirdness, rocking, and beauty. "Not For You", "Tremor Christ", "Immortality". That's where it's at for me as a PJ fan. It's also why I love both Riot Act and Binaural.

What's interesting is most of the rock oriented stuff mentioned so far was released by people who wouldn't call themselves "Christian rock". For whatever reason believers often make great music about faith, but when they call themselves "Christian rock" they suddenly have a hard time making good music. All of scientific research can not find the cause of this phenomenon.

I think a lot of fans can be disappointed right now, in a lot of teams. There isn't really any classic domination going on. Everyone has already lost a handful of games. I watched the Denver Broncos (woot!) somehow handily beat KC last night which dropped them down to tied with the Raiders. It's anyone's season at this point.

What order do you put Wes Anderson's films in?
lost highway replied to bttrbuffalo's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
Watch it again. A lot of his flicks (for me most notably Darjeeling) grow on you with repeated viewing. Bill Murry's hatred of the dolphins. Klaus' inferiority complex. The sloppy shootout scene on the island for their rescue mission which was sound-tracked by Mark Mothersbaugh (who is to Anderson as Elfman is to Burton). The boy on Murry's shoulders and beautiful stylized scene of the film festival. The interns going home with incompletes after the pirate attack. Uh, I need to go watch it again right now. -
Keith Olbermann suspension/ MSNBC woes

I'll have to watch for that. I would love to see someone take my bias to the point of hilarious parody. Or maybe that would just make me mad..... -
Keith Olbermann suspension/ MSNBC woes
lost highway replied to ShuckOwens's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
There was a really interesting conversation on the Daily Show last week between John Stewart and a Fox pundit. Basically John was suggesting that MSNBC being the liberal narrative to counter Foxes conservative narrative might not be as helpful as one might think. It definitely seems to put them in line for adding to the whole Confederacy of Dunces element we have going on in our political dialog in the U.S. Olbermann can be a bit silly, and obviously too holier-than-thou for a pundit that's throwing political donations around, but he just can't compete with the utter insanity of Glenn Be -
Farrar would never swallow his pride to do this, until he sunk so low as to release an album with a title and lyrics that are overt references to both Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie in a last gasp to choke out what little is left in the tired lexicon of "Americana". Oh wait.....

I agree Mr. Catfish. I was listening to the song More Like the Moon and thinking about frayed edges. That tune is much less "impressive" then a ton of other stuff they've done, but it communicates so much.... I definitely think the guys would be wise to take some risks. It sounds like they're planning on spending some time and doing just that.

It has begun. I'm just kidding. No, I get you. I think the last two records have outstanding A sides and mediocre B sides. I think sometimes I scratch my head at folks on here. Not because I'm offended. It's silly to be offended by someone subjectively judging a piece of art to be unsatisfactory. No, I scratch my head in wonder. It's interesting to try and understand what motivates people who seem so nonplussed, and have been for a long time. It would be like if I was on the Ridley Scott, or Martin Scorsese chat board discussing how long it has been since I thoroughly enjoyed a film

While it is obviously not to your liking I think much of WTA is what this lineup sounds like doing 60's or 70's pop tunes. Sonny Feeling, Deeper Down, You Never Know, Everlasting Everything are pretty 60's/70's to me. One thing I'm almost sure of is whatever the next record sounds like, there will be at least several things I love about it. Even more certain there will be a large crowd of people complaining about it on here. Explaining why they're fans of a band they don't care for anymore.

Not the paparazzi/ US Weekly linked thread I was expecting.....

Kinda pretty. Not a bad sound for that genre.... not much of a trace of the original in tact though. Seems like they added more new sounds than actually manipulated old ones, but then again filters, delays and reverbs can do strange things.

I like the last two records. I don't really care which "direction" they go. Every album has sounded so different. I just want top shelf Wilco songs. When I look back at AGIB, it's not for the style it's for the song quality. I think 100% of AGIB is classic. I think both of the last two records are about 50% Classic and 20% pretty good. AGIB had rock outs, blue eyed soul, folkiness, experimentation, pop. So have the last two. They just need to write a bit more, cut a few more as B-sides and take their time. I think half of SBS and half of W(TA) would make something that would rival AG

Nels Cline's lack of involvement with the last album
lost highway replied to AJ673's topic in Just A Fan
Sounds like he loves being in the band and making music with different people. -
Tweedy produced it, he didn't engineer it. Still a pretty big say in the sound, though. To me it sounds like a good, warm, no frills recording.
