  1. There was most definitely a time not long ago when if you praised the idea of regulating the markets people called you backwards. Like the rhetoric involving health care many knee jerks believed that any government regulation or oversight was the next step to fascism. I loved hearing Daniel Shore recall the savings and loan crisis and the heroics of FDR realizing that regulation was essential to the picture. Sometimes more than others. Bill Clinton was not into regulation. I think, perhaps, that was one of many reasons for the temporary boom in the economy. Bill Clinton was obviously a
  2. It might be fun. I expect mediocrity. I think Stone has made some comments about the film being a study of the greater phenomenon that is Bush's life and how such a bumbler was the right personality at the right time. It could be really interesting. Stone has launched quite a few stinkers though.
  3. If the worst he can do is be terribly mediocre, this country will still be taking a step in the right direction.
  4. Wow, I just watched the misquote video. Palin is a nut. Her use of the quote in the context of her speech is to essentially damn any woman who votes against her to hell. It's not exactly what she's saying, but it's the essence of her condemnation. If you need to feel better about this kind of thing just check out the latest polls here http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/
  5. Ohhhhh Face! (edit: in reference to Albright's comments. Not Analogman's link)
  6. Nader strikes me as someone who is best suited for advocacy. I also think he would do grand things for accelerating green innovations, but I don't know if he's a go to guy in terms of foreign policy. I did however, vote for him in my first presidential election (2000). Still don't know how to feel about that choice, but I had my reasons.
  7. This type of fear has always struck me as being out of touch with some of the basic dynamics of human psychology in realtion to power. I find people to be too competitive to create a cohesive unit of people powerful enough to commit such a conspiracy. Look at the multi-national entity that is the EU. They have already benefited from banding together, yet they have historical and contemporary differences that would never allow the entire content to morph into one state. And that's not even a conspiracy. The requirements for doing something so huge and keeping it secret are much higher.
  8. I saw a blog that said she was wearing an ear-piece for radioing info..... a little voice in her ear. They showed a screen shot of her right ear and it looked like something was in there, but you couldn't see very well. I wouldn't be surprised. It would be great if that was outed by the mainstream media, if it were true of course.
  9. This calls up an interesting question I have discussed at length with friends and lovers: What is the cut-off for middle class? I have taken a hip shot at between 40,000 and 120,000 a year but I don't know why I like those numbers. Probably because I see my parents as middle class and they each had a salary in the lower half of that range. I have only really hit the work force full time for the past half-a-decade and most years, my tax return indicates I am below the poverty line. Which is odd, because without children and paying cheap rent, I live comfortably enough. This can be a roug
  10. But it has. I disagree with Obama's gung-ho Pakistan destruction policy. Some people here are for it. Some people think Putin is a real threat, some think he's just sitting around. These are complicated issues that have a lot of implications (like the bail-out for example). But the fact that so many people are unanimously judging on one issue: Sarah Palin's intelligence might reflect on how un-complicated of an issue that is. She is uncomplicated. She is a total moron. I think there's easily 15 people on here that could debate her into the dirt with out going to 'debate camp', and I wo
  11. Yeah without even trying I could be interviewed and think...... hmmmm, what sounds good? The Economist
  12. The issue of McCain's foreign policy expertise is an interesting one. As he boldly illustrated at the debate, he has an extensive knowledge of U.S. military history and a number of large and small operations abroad. What I find disturbing is the fact that he is constantly and exclusively viewing our big world through a military lense. He would often get off topic and start to drop historical references and change his focus to another country. His tone sounded like an intellectual veteran coaching his grandchild in a game of Risk, or Axis and Allies. You could almost see him licking his ch
  13. Interesting. The public school system gave me a lot of emphasis on WWII, Christopher Columbus (mythology in elementary school and modern perspective in high school), The Great Depression and the Industrial Revolution. I think something else happened one time in Africa or Asia, but it's hard to be sure with my background. It probably will be many years though before high schoolers digest the 8 years of faux pas called the Bush administration. Poli Sci classes in college are already eating it for breakfast (eeew you eat shit for breakfast?)
  14. Your gonna wanna put that in slowly..... its got edges.
  15. It also prevents game hunters from making trophies out of an at-risk species. I would love to see some numbers about how much wolves are costing farmers in injured/killed/ or deliciously eaten live stock. I heard on NPR Palin wanted to pay hunters $150.00 for bringing in a wolf leg. What's next a nationalized polar bear tooth trade? Holy shit.....
  16. Did you notice how McCain defensively backed towards her, like: "oh shit, she's trying to give an intelligent response. Maybe if I stand closer my professionalism will rub off."
  17. Well everyone knows the last time God was on the side of the Republicans was during abolition. Since the start of World War II the great and infinite father of fathers has sided closely with the democrats and most of the natural disasters on U.S. soil has been the Lord's way of punishing America for falling into the grips of a republican leader. If you are uncertain of this kind of favoritism please consult the book of Exodus.
  18. Fair enough. Cut spending by 9 trillion. Bye bye post office, library, school and hospital.
  19. The role religion has played in history; politically, philosophically, morally and spiritually is of such great variety that anyone who can respond to 'religion's' worth in one sentence is an oaf. As for the film, I'm hoping it hones in on religious extremism and manipulation. Then contrasts that to a more mainstream religious society to show how the word religion can mean weekly prayer and orange juice with the neighbors and it can also mean strapping a bomb to your chest.
  20. No you're right. He is most honestly a hawk and portrays himself to be so. John McCain really believes the best way to fix the world is with bullets, military is the beginning and end of his perspective on everything. The only comments he could muster on any other programs is to say that they should be cut. I reiterate for the up-teenth time: How do you get rid of a deficit by continuing tax cuts and furthering military ambitions?
  21. Yeah, me too. I was getting emotional, it's ridiculous. I felt a sense of relief when he **spoiler alert** proposed at the gas station in the rain.
  22. ***1/2 out of five. Enjoyable. Last season started out slow too, and got more and more brilliant. Some episodes of the show seem to keep me glued on soap opera details alone, and the laughs are just a bonus. When a man in his mid twenties is excited to discuss Jim and Pam's engagement you know the setup was well executed.
