  1. The tour date closest to me is about a two hour trip. I believe it's a Saturday, but I don't think I can pull it off. And I agree on Love You Just the Same. My favorite Centro-matic album after Fort Recovery.
  2. Will is an incredible artist. It took me a long time (like 2 1/2 years of trying) to get acclimated to his vocal style, but once I finally got it I was hooked. I'm glad I never gave up! I've been listening to his various projects frequently for about 6 months. It crazy when I realize I've got somewhere around 10 of his albums and there are still MANY to go. Here are my personal favorites: Centro-Matic: Fort Recovery (I'd probably start with this one) South San Gabriel: Welcome, Convalescence Will Johnson: Vultures Await I'm dying to see Centro-Matic live. I assume a new album
  3. I'm another only child, so I'll use my parents and the next best thing. Mom and I have few common musical interests. Mostly newer bands she's heard from being around me (Spoon, Band of Horses, My Morning Jacket). She also finds Jeff Tweedy entertaining, though she won't admit to enjoying Wilco's music. We can also get together on some bluegrass-ish stuff. At the end of the day though she'd probably rather listen to Celine Dion or Anita Baker (both of whom I cannot stomach). Dad and I have more in common - sort of. The first time I ever impressed him (musically) was when I announced I
  4. I did end up buying a copy of this album and listening to it a handful of times. I appreciate what PJ's trying to do, but I can't get past the vocals. I don't want to be one of those fans, but I miss the deep, haunting vocals from songs like "Catherine" or just about anything from To Bring You My Love.
  5. Just finished my first listen on the turntable and I have to say overall I'm pretty pleased. I thought the record got off to a bit of a slow start, but 3 or 4 songs in I started getting into it. It might not be as immediate and atmospheric as the first album, but I liked it a lot. I expect this one to be a grower.
  6. Yes, it was Justin and a fiddle player. They played for maybe 25 minutes - I wish they had more time!
  7. I saw the show in Pittsburgh last night and had a wonderful time. Colin is is a pretty funny guy, which I guess didn't really surprise me based on the music. I know some people consider The Decemberists to be pretentious, but I always found the lyrics and overblown arrangements to be humorous and playful. They performed The Tain, which I thought was pretty impressive. I wasn't expecting to hear to one. I couldn't believe they came out for a second encore after that! I've been listening to the Decemberists a lot over the last couple months and I think I'm ready to upgrade myself to off
  8. FYI: This album is currently $1.99 in the amazon.com mp3 store.
  9. These prices make me glad he's not coming to my city. I'm not even tempted.
  10. My song is looking pretty good compared to many of the others in this thread. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h04CH9YZcpI Mr. Mellencamp's music has always reminded me of pleasant summer days during my childhood. This just might explain it.
  11. I'm on my third listen right now, and I have to say Go-Go Boots is soooo much better than the last album. I'm not crazy about "I Do Believe" or "Dancing Ricky," but it's pretty good otherwise. I know it's one of the covers, but I especially enjoy "Everybody Needs Love." Patterson's vocals are so soulful on that one (and I'm normally more of a Cooley kind of girl).
  12. I've been thinking about buying this, but I'm afraid of a major disappointment. I was a pretty big PJ Harvey fan until Uh Huh Her came out. I haven't bought anything by her since. That album simply had no redeeming qualities for me. Any thoughts on how it compares to the new one?
  13. Thanks for the advice. Bought my tickets Monday and I'm looking forward to the show! I also placed an order for the two albums I didn't have in my collection yet. I like to come prepared!
  14. I'm really loving the new album. I've been a moderate fan for a few years, thought they were kinda quirky and fun, but never really got into them like I have with other bands. I never really felt a connection to the music before, it was always just an intellectual thing, rather than an emotional one. My question is, as a casual fan who likes the new album, are they worth seeing live? I probably wouldn't even consider it, but Justin Townes Earle is opening and I'm kind of obsessed with his music at the moment . . .
  15. Last year I switched back from MP3 purchases to (mostly) CD and the occasional vinyl. For a while my CD player was getting a good amount of use, but I don't think it's been turned on for at least a month. I still find myself ripping the CD and listening on my iPod and computer. I received three vinyl records for Christmas and I've only listened to one of them. I guess I'm just lazy. My poor, neglected turntable is staring at me right now. Maybe I'll get off my butt and put a record on . . .
  16. It sounds like maybe I shouldn't complain about Pittsburgh.
  17. I have no problem with folk music. I love great fingerpicking and a good story. I just think Iron & Wine's version of the genre is a bit underwhelming. The vocals in particular do not impress me. I prefer someone with a more weathered voice if the instrumentation is going to be so sparse. I will admit that I don't own all his albums. Maybe I'll give them some more listening time after I absorb the new one.
  18. Yes, I do. I honestly love the idea of public television, but I do feel like they're aiming toward my grandmother's demographic. I am glad they put the full episodes of Austin City Limits online. I sure would be nice to know I could turn my TV on and know that the programs will be shown locally.
  19. I'm not a huge Iron & Wine fan, but I'm really looking forward to this album. I finally bought the Walking Far From Home EP today and I'm really enjoying it. I guess I prefer the later Iron & Wine. To be completely honest - I find The Creek Drank the Cradle to be kind of boring.
  20. I hope everyone enjoys seeing The National and Band of Horses this weekend. I just turned my TV on only to find out that this week my local station has replaced Austin City Limits with a program about John Denver. I checked the schedule - they don't plan on running at a later time. It appears they're simply not airing this episode, period. Is it just my local channel, or do all the PBS stations cater to to the over 70 demographic? I'm so tired of seeing Celtic Woman and Doo Wop specials every time I turn PBS on. At least the Sonic Youth / Black Keys episode is on the schedule (for now
  21. I really enjoyed seeing Monsters of Folk last night. It's fun seeing those guys switching from instrument to instrument and having a good time. I was also pleasantly surprised that Will Johnson got the chance to sing one of his songs (Just to Know What You've Been Dreaming). I've been on a Centro-matic/South San Gabriel kick lately, so that was wonderful. The National and Band of Horses are up next week. I'm looking forward to that one as well!
  22. Band of Horses - Infinite Arms The Black Keys - Brothers The National - High Violet Arcade Fire - The Suburbs Broken Bells -Broken Bells Phosphorescent - Here's to Taking It Easy Justin Townes Earle - Harlem River Blues Horse Feathers - Thistled Spring I could list a bunch of really good honorable mentions as well, but these are my definite favorites.
  23. I was surprised to find they closed our show with "Terrible Love," but it was an incredible experience, complete with Matt climbing the audience's seats from front to back of the venue, singing the entire time. It was surreal.
  24. Saw the show last night and I was completely blown away. I don't even know how to explain it. I mean, I'd read that these guys were great live, but I could never picture them having so much personality and energy. Best show I saw this year - and that includes An Evening with Wilco AND a gorgeous outdoor My Morning Jacket concert. Wow! Owen Palett was a really cool opener as well. I'm off to amazon.com to buy one of his albums right now.
  25. I anticipate the setlist. I hope to hear my favorite songs or a good rarity. After the show I give a lot of thought to the songs I heard. But when all is said and done, I'm am happy to take what I was given. I don't think I've ever walked away from a show complaining about the songs I heard. Annoying audience members are the only disappointment I seem to encounter. Now, I'm sure I don't see as many concerts as the rest of you. I've only seen Wilco twice. I've never seen any of the old guys who tend to skip their classics in favor of the new songs no one wants to hear. 2010 is going t
