  1. Exactly. He not only played with em he's on an inordinate amount of the seminal works from those bands. He must have been pretty good
  2. Spring '78 is still very much the same animal as Fall '77. But Fall '78 paves the way for what's going to happen in '79 - I'm thinking specifically about Jerry's guitar tone here. The show you linked is the "mescaline sulfate" show. WACKY stuff in the Dancin' & Werewolves. That is a nice read.
  3. I think the first time I heard Bobby Keys' work was when I was 7, I got Let It Bleed for Xmas right after it came out. I had no idea of who the man was, of course, but I recall Live With Me making a distinct impression on me. Seriously. In an album chock full of great moments, his solo is one of em. As far as his relationship with the band, In Keith's autobiography he's on record as saying he said that he had to fight to keep Bobby in the band. Because of Jagger, apparently. In fact (I think it was Steel Wheels '89) there was a whole tour where Mick didn't say a fucking word to Bobby, even t
  4. The BCT run in late October/Early Nov '84 has a number of good moments. It's always amazed me how well Garcia could play in that time frame considering that he was pretty much walking death then.
  5. As Mr. H said it gets pretty hit or miss. '84 is VERY hit/miss. But there are some shows where they kick it hard. Try 6/30 Indy for an example of Jerry being "on" damn near the whole night.
  6. I agree. I thought maybe a couple of shows (like the "Family Reunion" they did at Alpine in '02) would be enough. Pay lip service to the milestone but a tour doesn't get my motor running, that's for sure.
  7. I would've went with 11/6 Bingo instead, only for the "Jimmy Page Truckin", if nothing else instead of 11/4.
  8. P&F, after the introduction of Jimmy & Warren (Fall '00 through about Summer '02) was absolutely the King of all Dead-centric bands post-Jerry. Anyone who argues against that is just being silly. Hell, I saw a number of shows in that period that were more thrilling than almost any Bruce-less '90s GD show I'd care to name.
  9. Yep. But Jaimoe was gone for a brief spell, unfortunately.
  10. We were having a little debate as to what the FINAL SONG might be. I went with a double encore of Mountain Jam and WTCBU
  11. Blair's book is very VERY good stuff, but I might give the nod to Greenfield's "Dark Star". I like the approach he took (as he did with Bill Graham's book) by taking a particular time frame or subject and interviewing a number of different people on the subject at hand. Everyone has their own version of "what went down" and maybe by getting a number of different perspectives you can form your opinions as to what the 'truth' might be. ESPECIALLY in a band like The Dead, where it's pretty amazing anyone remembers anything at all, given the copious amount of sacrements that went on.
  12. Well, I plunked down the cash first thing this morning. I feel like you can't mess around and end up missing out.
  13. Surprised I didn't see 6/28 Boston in the Top 10. June '74 is one of the really great months of GD, probably the best month of the Wall of Sound Era (my opinion).
  14. I can barely contain my excitement just knowing that they found room to include ITMWLY in this box set.
  15. Good calls on those. I would add The Mousetrap (Indy) if you're so inclined. Very much a jamband and jamgrass friendly venue, with an outstanding craft beer selection.
  16. Fixed it for ya. Cause if we're gonna talk "art-synth crap" then TG blows Kraftwerk away imo.
  17. Another year - no Deep Purple, no Yes. Christ.
  18. Jesus H. Christ. OK WE GET IT. '77 IS THE GREATEST THING TO EVER HAPPEN IN THE HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSE. I just got a call from '84. They're feeling like a red-headed step child. They need a little love, Dave. I cannot fathom that in all the releases, ALL of them (Dick's, Road Trips, Dave's, Rhino multi-track stuff, etc), not one single '84 has ever been worthy? DAMN.
  19. Man I need to get back here more often. I love that record to death, but it doesn't make my top 10. Top 20 yes, but I respectfully disagree with #1. Fillmore East might be the best, if (IMO) it wasn't for the first 35-40 minutes of QMS's Happy Trails.
