  1. Regarding this week's selections: that 11/7/71 show was in the very first batch of tapes I ever acquired, and is a really good 'un. Two minutes into the Dark Star they're already reaching for deep space. It always just blows me away how quickly Keith fit in. I have a number of shows from 10/19 until the end of the year and he was immediately just right there with the perfect piano licks.
  2. Boehner is an idiot. How he got his present position just amazes me. At Michele Bachman's "press conference" on the Capitol steps the other day Boehner pulled a copy of the Constitution from his pocket and declared that he 'stands with the Founding Fathers who wrote this great document". He then began quoting the Declaration Of Independence, evidently forgetting that it WAS NOT the Constitution. God, he is a tool of the worst kind.
  3. Well, obviously my perspective is a tad biased. But the way the music was constructed to fit the lyrics is one of the most amazing things I've ever encountered in rock music. Or ANY music, for that matter.
  4. Yeah, MTV might have been a whole new vehicle to reach a larger group of people, but (with a few exceptions) it sure as hell didn't do a lot for rock music. Plus, I do blame MTV for ruining the GD scene (in part). Pre- "Touch" I could score tickets with little effort, but post- "Touch" it became a nightmare. I guess that's a whole 'nother thread, though.
  5. Yeah, Crimson didn't really "go commercial" I guess. They managed (with the 80s lineup) to get more concise, but even stranger than they were before! Kind of unique in that regard. Hey Hardwood, speaking of, did you ever see any Genesis shows when Bruford was with the band? He is without a doubt my favorite drummer in Rock music ever. I've caught him many times, but not with Genesis.
  6. Well, after the epic-ness of stuff like "Supper's Ready"...I mean, where do you go after something like that? All of those great Prog bands started to get more concise and 'radio-friendly' as the '70s became the '80s. Much to my chagrin. There's really nothing wrong with a nice, well constructed 3-4 minute song but I'm such a fan of the multi-part album-side length tunes.
  7. I think it's safe for me to say that if YHF had never been recorded I would not be the Wilco fan that I am today, and I probably would have never came to this message board. So I'm sorry about that. As I've said many times YHF leaves all the other albums in the dust (imo).
  8. Yeah, that's how I always saw it, too.
  9. "When I was your age sweetheart women weren't allowed to vote"
  10. Nice selection of tunes in that medley! I've always thought Afterglow was one of the best "love song"" tunes in the catalog. Just beautiful.
  11. Robert! NP: Gov't Mule - The Roxy, Atlanta GA 12/31/98 (With a Litle Help From Our Friends)
  12. Good news, Joe. Glad to hear things have been taken care of. As Crow said, abcessed teeth are not to be fucked with. 20 years ago I had an abcessed wisdom tooth and it was the sickest I've ever been in my life. It was touch-and-go there for awhile.
  13. I was shutout for Cinci last weekend. I've never had that happen before.
  14. Happy Birthday from glorious Elwood, Indiana!!! By violalee Hope your day was awesome, Dan.
  15. That's good stuff right there. Once in an Lit class I took we were supposed to recite an example of our favorite poetry. I recited "War Pigs". But...back to the topic at hand - any list that doesn't include QMS' "Happy Trails" is definitely flawed. I'm a GD nutcase but that LP is THE best example of the "San Francisco Sound". Acid Rock, baby.
  16. That's the one for me. Everytime I've heard it live it was AWESOME.
  17. Well well well...ask, and you shall receive (10/27/73)! Lots of great stuff from that show. I'm glad David played Greatest Story. There is a nice review in one of the DeadBases I have here - evidently during "Greatest" a HUGE guy got up onstage during that song and stood near Donna with his arms stretched out, crucifixion-style. There was no sign of violence so Big Steve just let him stand there for a few, and then led him off ever so gently. Donna let out a sigh of relief, and the crowd erupted with a blast of nervous energy. From that point on things kicked into high gear. Nice, crazy co
  18. ITCOTCK is a fantastic record (and Fripp's favorite, fwiw) but 45 bucks is a bit steep! I LOVE Discipline, but it's a totally different band. Like the Talking Heads on acid, if you will. OK, sorry to go off on a tangent here but when KC gets mentioned I have a hard time controlling myself.
  19. HH, now that you're totally won over, proceed directly to "Lark's Tongues In Aspic"...and "Red"...and "Starless & Bible Black"...and, well, you get the idea.
  20. First thought: Gram Parsons & Emmylou Harris - Love Hurts I couldn't stand that song when first exposed to it (Nazareth - yuck) but Gram & Emmylou's version showed me what the song really is.
  21. It might have been the GDTR book I mentioned - that story is told by Donna in that one. "Too shy to talk with Garcia". I can't imagine why.
