  1. Well, here's something that will ruin you for life - when Phish covered the White Album and they got to the part "you become naked" Fishman (the drummer) tore off his dress and ran around the stage starkers. Try to get THAT image out of your head!
  2. A close friend of mine saw them at a place called Amazing Grace in Evanston way back when. Colin Walcott was still with them then.
  3. That Oregon Live is a great record. "Silence of a Candle" is a beautiful tune.
  4. I saw McLaughlin play acoustically with a band around '88. His drummer (or percussionist) was a guy named Trelok Gurtu (sp?). I'll tell you what - that man was a killer! I think he's also played in latter versions of Oregon - a really great band imo.
  5. Actually, I'd be much more interested in reading Huckleberry's new tell-all, rip-Mitt-a-new-asshole book than any insane gibberish the Alaskan Governor would care to spew in book form. But that's just me.
  6. Looks like Daschle will be Health & Human Services Secretary.
  7. Do you have these? I have yet to pull the trigger on that set. A small review?
  8. Whoa. I've never heard that McLaughlin/Jaco/Williams record. That sounds like something I would LOVE.
  9. Better late than never. I guess I wish I would have got into the outlaw country much earlier than I did (late 20s). I had a stupid bias toward ANY country music, thinking it was just redneck music. I would have to say that Jerry Garcia (especially his work with NRPS) cured me of that - and then getting into Cash, Jennings, Nelson, Haggard, etc. was a revelation.
  10. Very interesting. I can't imagine Cheney losing too much sleep - maybe Dubya will get to pardon him.
  11. I understand your point, but (imo) Leeb has always been in it for himself. When Harry was talking about stripping Leeb of the chairmanship he went and started having lunch/talks with McConnell (who really has nothing to offer him but a spot in their caucus).
  12. I actually thought about starting a poll on The Leeb: keep him, or kick him to the curb? Let's look at it this way: the Dems need to take Alaska (likely), Georgia (not likely) and Minnesota (truly a toss-up, who the fuck knows?) to get to 60. I don't see it happenin'. So if they only get 58 or 59, what the hell? I say give Leeb the boot.
  13. Like I was saying a few pages back, my friend Mike has been laid off since Feb. '07 - and still makes $35+/hr. To do NOTHING. It's crazy, I tell ya.
  14. I wonder how much of the collapse of the USSR was due to us outspending them militarily, and how much of it had to do with them spending all that $$$ in what might be the most God-forsaken place on Earth. I know we need to try to clean that place up but it might be an impossible task.
  15. Lynch, we're sending vibes from the flatlands your way.
  16. No worries, man. Carville says it's ok. And if you can't trust James who can you trust?
  17. Nope. Mine says "These selections have been previously issued". It's on a label called Orbit.
  18. Well, that's nice that the 11/17/73 I mentioned this morning was seconded by the ultimate authority - not to mention the Fall '73 tour being the finest tour ever. That 11/19/72 Dark Star > WRS Prelude > Half Step is awesome as well - that was one of the first cassettes I ever owned, and I sure did burn that sucker up. And jc4: since moe mentioned the 10/19/73 Dick's Pick I'll mention DP #7 - from September '74 London. The Playin' on there might just be my very favorite stand-alone Playin'. It's REALLY out there.
  19. Yeah. Chuck Hagel's name is always mentioned for Obama's administration, and I can easily imagine Dick Lugar and Arlen specter (if his health is ok) as well. All of those guys are pretty centrist Republicans - I can't imagine wingnuts like Sessions doing anything but being obstructionist.
  20. Bump for 11/17/73 - I mention this show for the amazing Playin' > UJB > Dew > UJB > Playin' triple decker sandwich. I think it's the best version of this group of tunes (out of 4 or 5) - when they take Dew back into Uncle John's it truly is one of my favorite pieces of Dead music ever.
  21. Hank Harrison. A good college chum of Phil. First manager of the band (when they were the Warlocks). Founder of LSD Rescue - first drug crisis intervention center in the U.S. If I recall correctly, there was some beef about him selling some SBDs of the band (St. Louis '77?). Anyway, I kinda enjoyed his 2 books on the Dead. The style of writing was very much in the vein of the Beats - although not as good (of course!).
  22. I loved that book. Btw, did y'all see Barack and Michelle on 60 Minutes? How refreshing it is to see a couple so obviously in love and at ease with each other on national TV. Michelle digging at Barack about "doing the dishes" and the like. Such a change from the stilted conversations of W & Laura (who appear as if they were an arranged marriage) or the Clintons (who seem more like business partners than a couple).
  23. 7 years gone already. Man. I saw the David Nelson Band just a few days after Geoge passed. They did a great version of "Give Me Love..." and there wasn't a dry eye in the house.
  24. The Allman Bros. on Johnny Carson, August 1990. "Good Clean Fun" AND "True Gravity" - the latter with Doc & the Tonight Show horns! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZuVzLEGFt4
