Independent Music Stores in Virginia
Rusty Shackleford replied to bsr8j's topic in Someone Else's Song
I've been looking for somewhere to buy used CDs in Arlington/Falls Church, but have had no luck. I didn't realize it had been so long since Record Convergence shut down--that was the best place I knew of, but I guess it's been awhile. The sad truth is, it's much cheaper and easier to buy new stuff from Amazon than from anywhere else, even though I'd like to support a local establishment if I could find one. -
I'd like a copy of this, as long as it's lossless.

At the 9:30, it was doors at 7 pm, John Doe at 8, he played for 45 minutes, then Wilco at 9. John Doe's set was great, I thought--a bit punkier than I was expecting, given his recent work, but great. And he had Nels playing with him for 2 songs.

That was the first time I'd been to the 9:30 in about 10 years. It's a great venue, and certainly better than DAR. But I really like Merriweather, especially in the summer (obviously). I had a better time in the pit at last year's Merriweather show, although that's probably because it was my first Wilco show. Last night's set list was certainly a good one, but I was down front on one side, directly in front of Pat, about 10 feet from the stage, and I thought the sound was overly bass-heavy and generally a bit muddy. I assume it was better in the middle of the venue. Loved the energy of

John Doe's cover of "Gimme Shelter," featuring Nels, was one of the highlights of last night's show in DC, including Wilco's set. He's worth showing up early for.

That's a great set list. I didn't get tickets to last night's show but am going tonight. I'm excited for tonight, but a bit bummed that they are unlikely to play "Monday" two nights in a row. I'm hoping they play it again, because a kickass horn section is a terrible thing to waste.

My online channel guide (Verizon Fios) says Wilco is on Conan on Monday. Then again, it's often wrong...
-
You guys sound awesome. I'm looking forward to seeing/hearing you in DC next week.

I'm looking for one ticket to the Tuesday 2/26 show at the 9:30. Thanks.

WTF?!?!?! WilcoWorld charity auctions cancelled?!?!?
Rusty Shackleford replied to SquashedFrog's topic in Just A Fan
The auctions are back up, sort of. They've started over: http://wilcoworld.net/causes/index.php -
FYI: I got my ticket for Wednesday at the 9:30 in the mail about a week after I bought it on the "regular" online sale. Good luck getting tickets.

I'm in the fanclub but did not receive an email about the presales. Did the email clarify whether the presale is limited to UK dates or not? I was able to log in to the Sandbag/REM Tickets web site yesterday, but I still don't know when/if the US dates will be pre-sold.

REM Tour dates With National and Modest Mouse
Rusty Shackleford replied to remphish1's topic in Someone Else's Song
The fan club usually does a pre-sale. When I found out they would be touring again, I joined the fan club just to get the presale (it's only $10 to join). That said, they do cut off at some point, so you may or may not be able to join now and still get in to the presale. At any rate, I agree with the earlier posters that these venues seem a bit bigger than the band has been able to fill lately. I will be surprised if they sell out many of these dates. So, chances are you'll be able to score tickets, fan club or no. -
What is it about the 9:30 club that makes it sell out so fast? Two nights, both sell out in around 10 minutes? Most shows take days or weeks. Is the venue just that small, or that great? I've only been once, about 10 years ago. The whole experience of trying to buy tickets to these shows is pretty disgusting. I don't blame the band, because I've had no similar troubles with other venues, but this sucks. I was lucky to get one ticket for Wednesday.

My advice is not to use a broker, but to look on here or on Craigslist for singles, since this is a GA show anyway. Good luck.
-
I was on at 10 am sharp and could not get a single ticket for either show. Same as last time. I loathe the 9:30 club. I will try during the "public" sale, but I am guessing the scalpers will have all those, too.

I'm not a Sirius subscriber, but that show might be on their web site, which streams most of their content. Maybe someone can capture the stream.

Best show to download from the tour?
Rusty Shackleford replied to ChicagoPepper's topic in After The Show
I downloaded it this weekend--it sounds great, and it's a great set list too. I would definitely recommend this one. My personal favorite from this tour, though, is the Merriweather Post Pavilion show from 6-21-07, just because it's the only one i attended. The recording captures the awesome atmosphere of the show, culminating in an extended second encore and spontaneous 3rd encore of "What Light." I can't objectively judge the quality of the recording, but it sounds great to me. -

I agree with this. They have a ways to go before you can call [TBA] their "comeback album." I think their songwriting suffered when they stopped touring regularly, and it got worse when Bill Berry left--I doubt they would have gone through their unfortunate "experimental" phase on Reveal and Around the Sun if he were still around (though I must say I really enjoy Up, drum machines and all). The songs on the last 2 records, for all their elaborate production, seem like they were thrown together at the last minute. There's something to be said for a band develop songs over time by playing

I'm also heartened to see that they dusted off some real chestnuts for the Dublin shows: "Letter Never Sent" and "Kohoutek" were hardly ever played live even back when they were new songs. At least songs like "Harbourcoat" and "Second Guessing" were concert mainstays back in 1984. I think they're putting more effort into this album than they did to their previous few releases, and they're getting in touch with what made them a great band in the first place. I am very optimistic about the new record, after being pretty disappointed with the last 2. I haven't listened to the new songs much y

The start of this thread got me thinking about them, so I listened to Example again in its entirety yesterday. What a great record.

More dates on WilcoWorld for September
Rusty Shackleford replied to Preferred B's topic in Just A Fan
Far be it from me to offer friendly advice to a Texas fan, but...if I were you, I'd buy a ticket. You can always sell it if it gets near show time and it looks like your wife will deliver soon. My law school graduation was scheduled a week AFTER my wife's due date, and when it came around she was still showing no sign of imminent delivery--so I went ahead and attended the ceremony with the rest of my family (with cell phone on vibrate, of course). Four days later, I had a JD and a JR. Both my kids were late arrivals; of course, YMMV... -
It's a good record with several catchy tunes. Oddly, it was the first "Wilco" record I bought--I got it because I liked R.E.M. and the Minus 5 is a Ken Stringfellow/Peter Buck side project. I got into Wilco after they opened for R.E.M. on their 2003 tour. If you like Down With Wilco, I would also recommend the Minus 5's latest, self-titled, album (aka the "Gun Album"). Good stuff in there too.
