  1. Competition lowers prices, but adding a legal requirement increases demand which could more than offset the decrease. Fundamental. Prices may eventually go down by adding healthier people to the pool, but my point is there are several economic forces at work here.
  2. err... weight. And I first typed wait. I've lost a shit ton of sleep and brain cells.
  3. My wife just got a t-shirt that says I
  4. I listened to No Line on the Horizon. Probably the 2nd time I listened to it. Not bad.
  5. Okay, you're no longer dead to me. Anyone who says the Beatles are overrated has no concept of history. Period. Look at rock music in 1963 and what it was by 1970. Their willingness to pioneer Dylanesque, psychedelic, and experimental music and put their popularity on the line in doing so forever changed EVERYTHING in pop music.
  6. In defense of the Replacements: They were really never hard core, or even punk, when that was all that mattered in indie. Paul Westerberg could turn a phrase or melt you heart like no songwriter from the 80s. Their music still sounds vibrant and alive much more than, say, R.E.M. Their live shows were unpredictable, spontaneous, drunken messes. Perfect rock and roll attitude. This says nothing of their influence on the artists who followed, probably none more than Wilco.
  7. Margaret Cho was in the Bob Mould tribute concert a couple of years ago. She can't sing, and she's not ever made much of an impression upon me as a comedienne. Oh well.
  8. I have heard that some states have had premiums go up, others go down. There could be a ton of economic factors at play. One would expect them to go down because you have more healthy people joining the insured. But now purchasing insurance is a requirement, increasing demand, and possibly allowing insurance companies to take advantage of the requirement by raising or keeping rates the same to increase their profits.
  9. Yeah, Fox News is pretty much the equivalent of my retired family members who have nothing better to do than click "share" on unverified Facebook stories all day.
  10. Repeating myself on this thread, but I think Royal Tenenbaums is the most emotionally satisfying and my favorite WA movie. This looks damn good.
  11. Once I figured that out, this place became a lot more enjoyable.
  12. How cool would it be for the 'Mats to go in with KISS and play Black Diamond together in the induction? Not going to happen, but still...
  13. Make sure you watch Malala Yousafzai on the Daily Show from yesterday. I really want her to receive the Nobel Peace Prize Friday.
  14. Wow. Other than your 1st sentence, this has nothing to do with my post. I didn't -- and mostly wouldn't -- defend the tactics, salaries, or profit margins of pharma companies except to say those who develop truly life-saving meds deserve to be well-compensated. My post was entirely what you said about doctors and you pretty much ignored my reply. But thanks for your thoughts anyway.
  15. This and many other statements you made about doctors sure paint with a broad stroke. Reminds me of the kinds of things some people on the right were saying about my profession (public teacher) around the time Scott Walker was stirring things up in Wisconsin. I have a family doctor, have seen a few specialists in my time, my son sees a pediatric neurologist. I have had bad experiences with a small handful, but I firmly believe the great majority have striven to provide me and or my loved ones with appropriate care. Most of the make a helluva lot more money than me, but I believe they de
  16. I suppose my biggest concern about ACA is employment. There seem to be a lot of reputable reports of businesses hiring my p/t and less f/t because they don't want to provide the required insurance. On a semi-related note, I don't know if I've posted it here, but Steven Brill's cover story for Time on hospital costs is required reading. Health care reform needs to include some transparency in medical billing. Hospital chargemasters are downright evil. It's one thing for me to pay $8 for a beer a ball park because I'm a captive audience. I don't need the beer, and the cost is well adver
