just for further background check and a deeper understanding of where your opinions originate, which artists other than Gram Parsons, do you considered to be completely original?
-
Gram is definitely someone i want to check out, i just haven't gotten around to ordering his stuff online, as i can't find it in any local stores. i'll also ask for you to be more specific as to which songs blatantly rip off something - down to chord changes and melodies. i am a songwriter myself, and if you are one, too, i'm sure it is not uncommon for you to listen to something and get into and then think 'i would like to write something in that style." this is a necessity for any songwriter unless a person is dropped in the wild with a guitar and then make up an entirely new musical g

oh, Dallas! unfortunately i don't think there is anyone to go with...

even spoon did the free bonus track thing with iTunes? no way i'm buying all again for one track. why couldn't that have been on the bonus disk (it was only 20 mins)? anyone heard it/downloaded it?

i like all the songs on HTTT, it's just too long, bloated. the track order is just horrible, too. Sail to the Moon as track 3? something about the sound (maybe mastering) leaves some to be desired, too. at least they're mixing in NY instead of LA - hopefully not the same guy as HTTT or Amn. i guess everyone knows a month or so ago Nigel put up a youtube clip with brief snippets of a few of the tracks...it was originally on Dead Air Space, but last time i looked, it didn't seem to show.

i finally got to listen to this a few solid times and it's better than i first thought. i missed the new instruments that jack was experimenting with on GBMS and really only thought the single was something new for the Stripes, but all the songs are solid and it's a fun listen. don't think the st andrew track is too hot. not that i don't like that type of track (like Fitter, Happier on OK Computer, etc) but i can't understand what Meg is even saying for the most part.

i know the Off Broadway promo video on youtube has an extended jam not found on the studio version.
-
i wouldn't think the label would request Off Broadway. it's one of the most sparse and odd songs on any of his albums.
-
were you in the first 200 or after - thinking maybe they gave someone close a messed up one.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ga_Ga_Ga_Ga_Ga where they got it, i don't know - i don't remember seeing it in the booklet

i agree, i don't understand that random bit. if it transitioned to a total different part of the song a la Buffalo Springfield era Neil Young then that would be cool, but i don't get it. i'm also not sharing the extreme love of Cherry Bomb. the vocals are too distorted and it's not melodic enough. i like the 60's-ish background but don't like the vox/melody.
-
my only small very minor minute complaint - the bonus disc is quite difficult to get out i think i've read a lot of people mentioning Cherry Bomb but Don't You Evah is the song i keep replaying. the talkback dialog is hilarious. can anyone make out what Britt is saying at the end of Cherry Bomb leading into track 4? is it something about a shaker?

got my preorder today. 13.50 no shipping charge got me: -the album in nice glossy digipak with bonus disc (i think all the first pressings will have this) -gagaga button -Merge sticker -pretty large gagaga poster -band signed 7" with Underdog demo and non-album track with super long title apparently Britt signs his name, "BD." i haven't heard the record yet, but i did see the Underdog video yesterday and it was great.

Has Ryan talked about the song in any interviews? It seems like his attempt at a radio friendly rock song a la Weezer's "Beverly Hills." The irony is that the profanity and odd subject matter will prevent that from happening. I imagine he came up with it just fooling around in the same manner that he writes all the joke rap songs that he posts on his site. It sticks out like a sore thumb on the album to me. Seems more like a b-side/bonus track.

you don't like Two, but like Halloweenhead? it's interesting he said that he wanted to bring Sheryl's voice up in the mix since it's barely audible.

what does everyone thing of Adore? For Martha is definitely one of my favorite Billy tunes. the opening track is great, too. i think if you edited down Adore to a solid 40 mins it would be pretty good. Machina would prob be helped a lot if it was 40 mins or so. if Billy knew the word "EP," i think it would have helped the reception of his later albums a lot. back in the day i liked all of Mellon Collie except for the distorted screaming track on the second disk. i still might feel that way - i haven't got it out in awhile.

has there been any more talk of the final Chicago concert (i think 3 hours) with Iha still in the band? i know it was taped for DVD release because i think one of the songs ended up on their DVD video collection.
-
i just picked it up Fri, so i haven't got to listen to all of it yet. i was surprised at the 38 min album total. this is quite surprising for Adams, as usually he has 50 min + albums - Cold Roses was a double (before someone pulls that card). Off Broadway - the second part of the song sounds very familiar, like something from the 70's......Fleetwood, maybe?
-
i broke out 29 today. i think it's a pretty strong album. one thing that keeps people away, i think, is the length of the songs. you have to be in a certain mood to hear a lot of long story songs - or i do anyway. sorta like with Dylan's Times They Are...i recognize it's a good album, but i'm not always in the mood to hear mostly all protest downbeat songs with none of his usually humor thrown in.
-
i remember he put up an mp3 of one of the Black Hole songs (remember when they used to post new song demos all the time on weezer.com?) and it sounded pretty cool. maybe they'll do a special edition for Pinkerton like they did with the self-titled and include this stuff.
-
i feel the same. the only way Pitchfork would give him above 7 something (i think) is if he takes a totally left field turn and does some experimental noise record. even then, they'd prob say he was copying "x" band. interesting that Cold Roses is so highly regarded now. i could be wrong, but i don't remember it being hailed too much on release (just looked up 69 avg on Metacritic - lower than Jack (72) and tied with 29).

what really weighs Green down is that there is practically a formula for each song - same type of solo, etc. the only ones that break that mold are the singles. i have read that Rivers studied Kurt Cobain's songwriting trying to write the perfect song, and he numbers them all, so it's sort of like he manufactures them and cranks them out like an assembly line. i thought Maladroit was pretty good. Green had some good songs, but probably would have worked better as an EP. Make Believe had some ok stuff, too, but is a little too 'pop sheened' or something.

did you get the 4 7"s he put out first on Velvet Blue Music? all are great and have different versions of all the songs. the original Kisses whips the album version (although it's still great), but they lost the master tape of it. Buildings 7" has different opening drum machine beats and other stuff like that. there are a couple of songs that are b-sides that, last i heard, will never be released in any other format.
-
you are aware that most of the record (if not all) is streaming from their album website?
-
what about The Left Banke? you probably know Walk Away Renee. they were a short lived chamber pop band that was great. unfortunately a CD with all their record output is out of print and very high on eBay.
