  1. I've always taken concept album to be where every song is related directly, but most of these seem to be more the 'theme' records that someone mentioned. OK Computer for instance - i personally wouldn't call that a concept album. sonically there is a theme and there is a current of paranoia, technology, etc running through, but tracks like Exit Music are about Romeo and Juliet. The Tourist is about Jonny Greenwood observing tourists. I've heard the first concept album was The Pretty Things - S.F. Sorrow (i think that's the name). anyone heard it?
  2. Does Gallowbird's Bark feature crazy synth interludes or does if have more 'straightforward' pop songwriting?
  3. I'm not sure I've ever seen Series in a store. I'll definitely have to look into it though.
  4. I started with Gimme Fiction and thought that was pretty good. Then was recommended Girls and was really impressed. I like it more overall over Gimme. I recently got Kill and I'm not as impressed with it. Several songs are short and some feel unfinished, but I haven't listened enough to really gain an opinion yet. So basically there are only two more Spoon discs, the recent reissue and Series? where do these fit in with the last 3? if they're more like Girls I will probably like them.
  5. I like Free As a Bird, still haven't heard Real Love. Reading Many Years From Now was actually kinda my introduction to the Beatles, so I actually prob have always leaned more towards Paul even though hearing I Am the Walrus on the radio is what made me buy my first Beatles album. Of course, that was probably 7 or 8 years ago, so who knows how I would interpret it now with what else I've learned. I've been listening to those Lost Lennon Tapes radio broadcasts that someone posted a link to and have gained so much respect for Lennon. Just hearing the demos of all his later solo work lets you rea
  6. I have Blueberry and Bitter Tea. I really, really want to like them, but like you said, those synths can be annoying. They're so spastic. A song will sound great and then a cheesy synth will come in. I'm not anti synth, it's just something about some of the sounds they use.
  7. I guess it's kinda the middle album (literally actually i think) where he still had some lo-fi quiet acoustic songs, but then began to expand his sound with prominent drums, electric guitar. If I could only have one ES album it would probably be X/O, but I like each one.
  8. finely heard it. pretty interesting. don't see it being a mainstream radio single like Fell in Love or Seven Nation Army (or whatever the name was) - there are too many weird stops/instrumental passages i would think. i have no idea if Blue Orchid got played on the type of stations that play top 40 (britney spears, etc) anyway though (as i don't listen to that type of station).
  9. I guess this is one I haven't heard. After his death, I downloaded a ton of songs from the b-sides sites, but I don't remember one with that title. The only instrumentals I have are, "Tiny Time Machine, " and, "Our Thing." Can you tell me anything about those?
  10. why is this exactly? did he play the song live?
  11. if you go the Sweet Adeline messageboard, you can actually ask Larry Crane if he has found this. elliott's family has hired him to archive pre-Dreamworks recordings. he has been kind enough to answer everyone's questions.
  12. The Nurse and marimba is probably what got me interested in the band. Honestly, before I didn't get into the hype and guitar/drum setup, but when I read some reviews and they mentioned the different instruments it got me to listen to clips and I liked them enough to buy the album. I didn't think they were horrible or anything, just nothing made me want to look any further. GBMS did. Never crazy about Blue Orchid either. I agree that Take Take Take is killer, too.
  13. they didn't write together, but the parts the other would play/counter melodies, etc, added a lot. I remember George in an interviewing talking about Paul's contribution to Something and While My Guitar (bass in S, piano in W). And with She's Leaving Home - a McCartney song where Lennon came up with the idea to sing the answering part from a different point of view.
  14. Clinic did this, too, but I didn't know before I bought the CD version. This would be the way I'd like to go (vinyl w/cd) but then there's this dang dvd with the documentary on there. sheesh!
  15. eh? i think i'll just have to give up and uninstall it. not too long now anyway.
  16. i went to the trouble to download Quicktime to my computer at work (why does Wilco only cater to Macs?) and finally got the player to come up, about to play it, and then it's asking for some Quicktime security code or something. anyone else experiencing this?
  17. all I'm basing my statements on is Ester's 2006 album, Rocinate. is this one included in your statement? to me they sound very close sonically.
  18. i picked up Everybody on vinyl today for $6. anxious to hear it!
  19. the question is - which cd version of Ziggy do you buy? i bought the remastered version from 99 only to find out later they had cut out some little bits from the original record (something about a countdown leading into one song and something else). Ziggy is great, and i still haven't got any more of his cd's ( other than Station to Station on vinyl) because i'm not sure which version to get. i think i read about some imports that have bonus tracks. he really deserves some remastering being done in the vein of Dylan and Talking Heads.
  20. I got Harvest on CD a few years back. Then last year I was looking at a music store and found On the Beach for $1 or $2 on vinyl. It was on the floor I guess because the jacket is waterdamaged. The record is in great shape though. I also picked up After the Gold Rush vinyl for $5. I liked OTB from first listen, but I haven't been able to get into ATGR as much. What's the deal with the short songs at the end of both sides of the record? Did he just do some quick songs to fill out the record?
  21. has anyone heard of Ester Drang. they're from the same area (OK instead of dallas) and they're somewhat similiar. they are 70's influenced too (more Floyd where midlake is fleetwood). i'm not saying the Midlake record is bad, but i don't see how it's so celebrated and Ester Drang's is not.
  22. Last time I checked The Shins have stayed in the 30 range for several weeks and their record came out at the end of January. I'm certain Wilco will be top 10 when their's comes out. It's not as hard to get top 10 these days.
  23. i've been listening to these today at work. great stuff. had no idea there were Quarrymen recordings. the STrawberry Fields demo was interesting. i never got around to buying the Anthologies, still seem too pricey to me, so this stuff might be on those for all i know.
  24. can you download these to your computer, or only stream? i have never messed with an iPod.
  25. i know the bible one is a flip book. lame-o. the other one progresses? it just seems like random to me. i'll never look at them again unless i want to ask myself, "was that really what came with the special edition?"
