Sonic Youth and the Hold Steady, 8/29/08
Three dollars and 63 cents posted a topic in After The Show
This was my first Sonic Youth show after liking them for a long time, and it definitely won't be my last. They opened with two songs they only wrote the other day and packed the set list with a lot of deep tracks from Daydream Nation. The sound quality in the TLA was a bit too muddy for my taste, but the band still sounded great. I was up in the balcony, so I didn't have as good a view as I'd hoped to, but the show was as attention-grabbing visually as it was in terms of sound. Footage of Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young from a documentary of the 1969 Big Sur Folk Festival flashed in the backgr -

Dylan is quite the diva about cameras. I can't believe security sent me all the way back to my car with my camera at that show a few weeks ago. I asked why they didn't post it on any of the signs on the way up to the gate, and the guy got assy with me. Some people managed to sneak in smaller digital cameras, but from what I saw most of them were only able to get one or two shots before security came over to them. I don't see what the big deal is, as long as people aren't using flashes. I'll be interested to hear how Party at the Moon Tower's show was last night. When he's on, he's still gre -
I'm going to see Sonic Youth tomorrow night and spending the night in Philadelphia. The rest of the weekend will be pretty low key. I'm probably just going to be doing odds and ends around the house and going shopping for things for my new office.

I'm planning to check out the U2, Stones, and Pixies ones for sure in the next few months, and possibly a few others. I'm hoping to propose a book next time they have an open submissions period, so I need to get more familiar with the series.

I really feel like it's just a matter of time before Fender makes a Jazzmaster for Nels. If they can do a screaming purple J. Mascis model, they can do a Nels model. -

I finally got around to pre-ranking my picks. I'm winging it this year. We'll see how it turns out. Two years ago I won the league I was in, but last year I got a bad position in the draft and ended up with no running game, which killed me. -

I think a lot of what you get from a Dylan show has to do with the set list. I checked the set list from the next night, and he played a lot more songs I'm familiar with, and I think I would've had a much better time. Chances are he was just having a bit of an off night. I hold him to a higher standard since I like him so much and have seen him so many times. I was just disappointed that the first time I had a good seat for one of his shows, he wasn't fabulous. I'm sure you'll have a good time--just make sure you don't have rain sticks to tote around I've been pretty hit or miss with Lucind -
I don't know for sure, but I'd guess at the Spectrum that it would be sections 212-216, 225-226, and 201-203. There's no way I'd pay that. I had a seat in one of the better sections for U2 at the Wachovia Center a few years ago, and while it was good, being in GA the next night gave me a better view. I'm trying to decide between a mid-price seat and GA.

Favorite movie scenes...

The scene in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest where MacMurphy is acting like he's watching the World Series and gets all the other guys to cheer along. The whole movie is pretty brilliant, but that one stands out. I love Pulp Fiction and The Big Lebowski so much that I have a hard time picking single favorite scenes from either of them. -

I second that. There's no way I'll have time to read and really appreciate 200 pages by the time I can get the book, even though I'm a pretty quick reader. I hadn't heard of this one before, but I think it sounds really fascinating, and since I've been reading a lot of nonfiction this year, this seems like a good book for me to pick up. -

I saw Bob Dylan last week, and I almost left. The sound was really off for the first few songs--the vocals were way too low in the mix, and he was even more of a garbled mess than usual. I'd paid a lot for the ticket and was pretty close to the stage, though, and more than anything I stayed out of respect to him. You don't walk out on Bob Dylan. I'm glad I stuck it out, since they did get better, but it was definitely the worst of the six Dylan shows I've been to over the years. I loved his band last summer, but this time they just seemed to be going through the motions, in part because it -
