I totally agree about the Chess sets. Actually the Chess blues box set from 1992 has some great old and somewhat more obscure stuff on it. I suppose if Bo Diddley is a blues artist (I guess he is......then you gotta figure Chuck Berry is too...) how about Fats Domino? Along those lines Muddy's piano players Sunnyland Slim and Otis Spann. And Little Brother Montgomery and Jimmy Yancy are other great piano blues guys. There are a whole raft of boogie woogie and barrelhouse type artists from the 40s. Not to be forgotten is the greatest of the saloon blues slide players - Hounddog Taylor

Considering this person is asking about brassy/jazzy type blues, this is a good suggestion. I would certianly check out any number of releases on Delmark (the oldest indie label in the country) for newer Chicago style electric blues and then go look at the Alligator catelogue for more Chicago type stuff. There are literally hundreds of great releases from these two labels to choose from. Don't forget the Chess reissues. There are also several good box sets to choose from. Also the blues on Vee Jay are good for older electric stuff post war. If you want brassy stuff then remember that jaz

The Birmingham Sound: The Soul Of Neil Hemphill
LouieB replied to PopTodd's topic in Someone Else's Song
John Ciba...nice guy and class act. These comps can be bought through Laurie's Planet of Sound where John used to be a clerk. I would second that they are great. Every once in awhile John does a showcase for these guys at the Hideout or some place like that. Most are much older now. LouieB -
Randy indentified it last night as a version by Jeff Buckley. Either way it sucked. Sadly Adam made the cut. LouieB

Yea, hearing about it was pretty upsetting. Jim was walking someone home (a female friend) when this happened. Amazingly Jim is okay and the attempted robbery didn't come off as planned by the assailant. LouieB

That would be my assessment too.....I knew you would know them. They made serveral singles that were played into the ground. I am sure they are well off today. LouieB

Ah the dreaded Dynaflex.....I remember it well (I have many in my collection actually...) And yes theoretically is the word to remember here... LouieB

You will if you hear them.....they are a classic rock staple.... LouieB

I know, I was just fucking around and agreeing with you. Whenever you start collecting vinyl you don't have to break your bank account buying the 180gram stuff you are talking about on the other thread. Back in the day for me was 1969 and they were already selling cut outs for a fraction of the full price then. Used LPs in the 1970s saved my poor ass to be sure. Yes, very few radio stations own vinyl any more, even the little indie ones. XRT once had a huge collection which I assume they still have, but very rarely play. In other tales of record collecting (not vinyl) I bought the del

Then build a guard house with a flush toilet in it....he can afford that; or get it serviced regularly. According to the story I heard it would cost an extra $70 bucks a week to maintain it properly. Don't you think he makes enough to do that? Why piss off his neighbors?? Does he have that many guards who take that many dumps??? LouieB

I saw the last half of the show last night including the atrocious Ring of Fire. Wow....what a stinker. Randy Travis, what a has been also. LouieB

I saw this story on the TMZ last night (yea, I sort of addicted to the show now.....my bad) and it is a stitch and a half. What the hell does anyone need a portajohn for with a huge fucking house in Malibu anyway? Can't he and his house guests use the probably half dozen or more bathrooms IN THE HOUSE???? In his old age Dylan is going off the deep end I guess. LouieB

I totally agree with this. Up until the great vinyl rush of the last couple years (and to a great extent in spite of it), you could (and can) still get plenty of old not perfect records for cheap at your local record or resale shop. How often are you really going to play the ARS anyway really?? Not too often. I just picked up a perfectly playable, if not perfect Marvin Gaye and Tami Terrell LP (their first) for $2. Don't let the snobs convince you otherwise, there is lots of perfectly playable vinyl still to be had. As soon as the rush is over by the youngbloods, the stuff will be cheap ag

Both of these bands seem always on the verge of breaking-up/continuing on. RRM has gotten some fairly significant PR around here lately. Sadly I didn't see them back in the day and keep missing them now. Jim Becker also is working on an album with his own group, which should be out "sometime." Considering the extent of the mugging, he is lucky to still be with us. LouieB

Yea, really not sure why anyone would listen to them now. Go buy their LPs, I am sure you can finds lots of them at your local used record store or local resale shop. It will cost more to have it shipped to you from a dealer at Amazon than it will be worth. I love it when dealers have so much stock that they sell stuff for a buck or less. You can get CDs on Amazon for a cent if you look. LouieB

Is this a list??? LouieB

I ran into JIm Becker at Lauries a couple days ago and he said the album would be out in the fall. Seems like a long time. Jim has been out of commission for a few months due to a mugging last fall. I suppose I shouldn't talk about this more than I have but he was injured badly. Luckily he seems pretty good. LouieB

Jon Stewart destroys Mad Money's Jim Cramer
LouieB replied to Sir Stewart's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
I finally got around to watching this after hearing it refered to on the regular (??) news shows. Cramer is just an entertainer, same as Stewart, Rush Limbaugh and just about everyone else who has a show on any media that is selling ads and trying to get someone to watch/listen/read.....All Cramer's shouting and supposed expertise is nothing but a show. I was sick this weekend and put it on twice in row and listened straight through (well fell asleep during part of it.) Good stuff all the way around. LouieB

There is an interesting...moderately interesting article in the New Yorker by critic Sasha Frere-Jones. Some nice insights and some kind of dumb stuff too, but a great pic. LouieB

As mentioned before the only reason I have this thing is because i subscribed to No Depression and had about two years left and they switched to this. Paste got a deal that's for sure. I never would get this of my own accord. Sorry to hear RS is even smaller now than ever. So it goes. It is going to be that the only two publications left will be the New York Times and the New Yorker....oh yea, Time and People also and the tabloids...maybe. LouieB

I think this was the only article I actually read in the new Paste....more stupidity from this rag....but I read it anyway. LouieB
