  1. Jeez, Farrar can really crank out the albums..... LouieB
  2. Yea, go with the paperbacks. And don't think you have to finish them in a big hurry, they are really enjoyable (if you like history of course...). Let me know if I steered you right or straight off a cliff.... LouieB
  3. I saw Taylor speak a few years back and he sold his books, so I bought all three and figured I would read them someday. I started the first and worked through it fairly quickly. It chronicles his early life up through the Kennedy assassination. This is the period of King's greatest successes and what he is predominantly known for. I won't say it is an easy read, but it is also not nearly as daunting as you may think. The second is somewhat different and steps back to the Kennedy assassination and moves forward through the Johnson years and the passing of the 1964 Civil Rights act (I just r
  4. All one ever needs is one really big hit that plays in rotation on oldies or classic rock station and you are set for life. LouieB
  5. I would like to put in a plug for Taylor Branch's trilogy of America in the King years. I am on volume two and it is really great. If you only have a chance or patience for one, Parting of the Waters is really worth checking out. LouieB
  6. Something they sing at Near North Montissori School, which is part of the benefit. LouieB
  7. Never did read it, I bet it has some juicy stuff though... Way off the Dylan album topic, but for a time when Bob and Joan were at least trying to sing together and did so somewhat successfully, check out "God on Our Side" from the Newport Broadside 1963 album. This sort of works. Dylan wasn't totally trying to sing on his own and Joan seems to keep up and not over do it. LouieB
  8. I still have no idea and not sure i want to risk the Google time....okay I did....still haven't heard him before....luckily... LouieB
  9. I really think this is a case of you had to be there, not that I entirely was, but my sister who was about three years older had all her records back in the day. She was the role model for early 60s folk female artists and while that period and that style have long since passed her importance to the urban folk revival is unsurpassed. Even now people who liked her, don't necessarily like the the originals of the songs she covered (meaning the old songs, not the contemporary songs such as Dylan, etc.) because what she did was wash out the twang and put a very polished sheen on very old and rur
  10. The old, I can't stand Joan Baez and her voice is so tired. Admittedly she is now not the "star" she was in the 60s, but she did ALOT for Dylan's career including ecording what were wonderful versions of his songs on her own albums, bringing alot of attention to him. Even now she continues to promote his songs, some of which are primarily known because of her, including Mama you've been on my mind and Love is Just a four letter word among others. I sort of agree that the two of them don't sound all that great together, but then again, few people do sound good with him. (and yea, EmmyLou

We finished the show with the last two songs on the Onan Suite; so this IS based on the story out of the old testiment about masterbation..... LouieB
  12. It is one of the greatest songs ever. Joan Baez does a great version of it on one of her early albums. It was sort of her song after that. LouieB
  13. Based on what facts? In fact schools where teachers don't have collective bargaining rights (private schools and charter schools), the salaries are much lower. LouieB
  14. Are we comparing Wilco to Miles Davis now? (when does Jeff get to pick out a good wig??) Good one.... I am kind of hoping the new album comes out tomorrow. LouieB
  15. Poor old JWH is kind of desperate I guess.... After stealing a name from a Dylan album and sounding like Elvis Costello...what can you do next?? (Actually I kind of liked him back in the day...) LouieB
  16. I hear it is being released July 23... Isn't it a bit early for this kind of thing?? LouieB

With mine the disk fell out, but that was it. Still better than the fucked up packaging on the new Andrew Bird. Great album, by the way. I listened to it in the car going to southern IL yesterday. So where is the script/plot of the various parts of the suite on the second half?? Is this a novel, comic book, what?? Just not that hip to know and have not done any research. Rosie and I plan to play a cut on her radio show tonight.... LouieB
  18. Sorry to panic you...I guess it was a video game that came out in 2005. All I ever saw were billboards, so I guess I thought the movie was remade..........thank jah it wasn't. LouieB
  19. Okay I am off to Southern IL tomorrow and may or may not get back on here prior to being on air. Last week the stream worked, but if anyone wants to check it out, WDBX.org We will be playing songs about love, the Presidents, politics, and the last depression; and maybe a new number or two... Thanks. LouieB
  20. Great movie, which I did see in the theater, since that was pretty much the only way to see it when it came out. Anyone see the remake (there was a remake right??)???? LouieB

    Nels Cline

yea, I thought about that when i opened the package today, which was actually totally fool proof. I will listen to it on the road tomorrow....on the way to Southern IL. LouieB
  22. I have seen them three times too and each time I am less impressed, although they do play well. I have plenty of nice memories of them though... LouieB
  23. THIS is why the Grammys are so much fun. I would have watched more of it, but weirdly my HDTV doesn't get CBS because the station in Chicago sucks, so I had to watch it in analog and I am now spoiled. The Grammys are the same as the Oscars (except the Oscars are always a better show even when they suck), it is simply entertainment, not a show on music. LouieB

Going to get the actual disk today...I hope. LouieB
