  1. Bummer....the guy wrote more books than most people ever read... I always liked his short stories the best....maybe because they were ...short.... LouieB
  2. I gotta be honest, I never have given him much serious thought as a jazz guy either. He certainly doesn't appear to be a top tier jazz musician, but I guess he was good enough to make a bunch of albums. LouieB
  3. He actually had a pretty significant career as a jazz player... LouieB
  4. Even the boy's mother was incredulous.... Then again where did he get the dough for a uniform. They can't be cheap. LouieB
  5. Actually getting the movie and watching it with the soundtrack is a great introduction to Glass. It works very well and will give you an idea of what he is up to. Then the soundtrack alone will work even better. I have listened to that (got a copy for like very little a few years back), and I think it is NOT the place to start; it is sort of boring really. There is an album with songs on it that may be readily available on LP from your local record store from the 80s called Songs for Liquid Days. IT has a bunch of singers on it that is just okay too. but it is fairly accessable (meant
  6. Greg Kot also gives this a lukewarm review in the Trib today. He also half panned the new Springsteen and Franz Ferdinand (well isn't everyone??) I think Kot really wanted to like this, but just couldn't get there. LouieB
  7. Glad we agree about something here (now that the election is over...) I have been asked to see both people and I just can't do it. It is just way too depressing. For someone to say that to Johnston is just plain cruel. Mental illness is no joke. Both of these individuals are seriously mentally ill and it is not fun for them or for their families and friends. It is particularly upsetting in the case of Erickson who was a real trailblazer and burned out so early. In Johnston's case, he has a slight talent, which it is nice that people cover his songs, but he is also a very sad individual
  8. Start anywhere, it pretty much all sounds alike.... LouieB
  9. Decoration Day and Southern Rock Opera... LouieB
  10. Apparently the IL constitution is pretty vague on impeachment (I suppose since I haven't actually read it...) and if Blago hadn't acted the fool for so long he would have more support in the legislature and could ultimately beat this thing, not unlike Clinton, but sadly he alienated his own party who is in power, so he's outta here. LouieB
  11. Well impeachments trials are not strictly done according to judicial proceedures, so I suppose in some ways it is not fair/ Usually there is a pretty large political component to them and in this case the General Assembly is simply fed up with the guy, so while he may have the moral high ground on his side of the argument, his stature in IL is totally in the toilet and has been for several years. His conduct has hurt the actual working of the government, so it is time for him to go, whether or not it is on the basis of strictly criminal activity. Those issues will come out in the federal corr
  12. We aim to please... Get out your tweezers....they are not just for plucking eyebrows anymore.... LouieB
  13. Yea, you are right, I guess... LouieB
  14. You got a point there.....Berman has elected to go with quality over quantity... LouieB
  15. Actually he could have, but is choosing to boycott the entire proceeding. Needless to say it probably won't help for him to do a thing. He keeps saying the thing is unfair, his lawyer has quit and it looks like we will get to see him make the rounds of the news (if you count Larry King and the View as news) next week. The sooner this guy is gone the better; then IL pols can get back to business as usual, whatever that is..... LouieB
  16. Goofy song with a great catchy hook. To back up what Mountain bed says, all over the midwest you get way too much JCM to this day. Jumping on this late, it is easy to misinterpret Pink Houses because it has some very snarky lyrics that appear to be criticizing those that he is trying to promote. I have never thought it was that great a song. LouieB
  17. Wow, here is a brutal review from The Reader, which takes not some pretty cheap shots at Andrew, but one at Wilco as well. (Oh No does sound rather Wilcoesque....) LouieB
  18. Bummer, but I am sure we haven't heard the end of him and his music. Robet Pollard killed GBV and still cranks them out. LouieB
  19. Not being much of a musician myself (in other words barely at all although I did play plenty of scales in my time), I think the one thing that always stuck with me about the Charlie Parker story is that when he was humiliated as a teen he went back and learned the changes to every scale, even though other jazz musicans of his time, even the great ones like Lester Young, only played in a handful of keys and were not fluent in the more unusual keys. Having learned how to play everything, Parker was armed with the ability to switch up things in ways other musicans were not, not to mention the f
  20. Yea, let's hope.......things have changed.... edit...who knew so many songs had change in the title.?? LouieB
  21. 1975...OMG has it been that long??? LouieB
  22. I am barely awake this week.......and I have no idea who Rosie is playing at the moment.... Oh yea..this is the "Hope" and "change" show....so "Pick up the Change" gets played. LouieB
