  1. There is so much stuff going on even on weeknights that it is unbelievable. Going to Schubas on Tuesday as myboyblue suggests is a perfectly good idea since no matter who plays there, Schubas is a great place to go; relatively cheap drinks, good food in the restaurant and a nice room. Tuesday's at the Hideout with Devil in a Woodpile is always fun as well. Again check this Reader and reference people's ideas on which clubs are fun. You can and should PM me or anyone else from here to ask for additional suggestions. The Cubs sit in the middle of a fairly interesting (if somewhat homogenious)
  2. I finally read this article this morning. Maybe someone in NYC can go check it out. Patti is one of my all time favorites and this movie looks interesting. LouieB July 27, 2008 Two Amateurs, Reinventing the Wheel By TERRENCE RAFFERTY WHEN Steven Sebring began filming Patti Smith, 12 years ago, he was, by his own admission, pretty much an amateur. He made his living as a fashion photographer, as he still does. He didn
  3. Yea, really... I read an article about Neil Diamond and his second album for Rubin and some how I simply can't get excited about this take a geezer and make him a significant artist again (not a star, because Diamond continues to be that...). Somehow it seems improbable that even the great Rick Rubin can do for any of these guys what he did for Johnny Cash. But we shall see. LouieB
  4. Finally some controversy back on VC. I was beginning to worry that everyone had gone to sleep. It takes someone new saying something a bit outrageous to get shit going here. Neil Young is one of the great DIY artists in all of rock. The guy took a modest talent (particuarly on electric guitar) and continues to turn out records year after year (sometimes several in one year) that can be hit or miss. The fact that the last twenty or thirty years of Neil Young you can take or leave isn't necessarily all that bad. Prairie wind sounded like a slight and maybe forgettable album and yet it was
  5. You forgot Jeff.... LouieB
  6. my thought too... At this point Bob should just give this stuff away.... LouieB
  7. I wish it was tomorrow.... LouieB
  8. Thats usually when I listened to it also. The final show was striking in terms of how old Dick sounded. Kind of sad and upsetting really, I guess that's just the way it goes. LouieB
  9. Well I am still pissed at them for getting rid of Stuart Rosenberg. I suppose there is something to be said for all the talk in the evening, but I don't turn the station on since I have pretty much gotten my fill of talk during the day. LouieB
  10. Happy Birthday!!! See you soon. LouieB
  11. I agree. It just isn't that great a movie that's all. LouieB
  12. You may recognize the reverse side that has the picture of the house and the title of the album. LouieB
  13. Having seen it, the best scene is the concert on the roof. All the rest is pretty fucking dull actually. LouieB
  14. Its a bit slow around here today, so here is an article in the Trib about "Let It Be". I guess we will have to wait longer to re-view this not so great piece of cinematic history. LouieB It's time for 'Let It Be' to be told July 27, 2008 Guns N' Roses' "Chinese Democracy" may be the poster child for long-delayed projects, but some of us have been waiting even longer for something else: A decent home-video version of the Beatles' "Let It Be." Michael Lindsay-Hogg's 1970 documentary hasn't been in video circulation since low-quality VHS and Laserdisc versions were available in the mid
  15. I was picking up some cheap LPs at the Brown Elephant store in Boystown and heard some Wilco (just don't ask me what I forget now.... ) LouieB
  16. Just in case you are not joking....Music From Big Pink... LouieB
  17. Funniest reply ever... Part of the reason you have never heard of him is that he left for Europe and never came back. Others did the same. Dexter Gordon left for Europe and after approximately 20 or so years he returned to the US and critical aclaim (as did Coleman Hawkins a generation earlier(. It is certainly no secret that Europeans (and Japanese and just about everyone else around the world), cared more about these guys than the good old US of A, not only because of racial issues, but also because jazz fell out of style with the general public. Some of us go see Johnny's childh
  18. Those of us who live in Chicago have a love/hate relationship with WBEZ our public radio station. Programming at BEZ has been somewhat flakey for many years now, but the one bonehead move they made was to eliminate nearly all the music programming and put in talk all evening. It used to be that BEZ had jazz on all evening and into the early morning hours. That is now all gone and the sole voice of jazz on BEZ is Dick Buckley, who has held down what is now a one or two hour show on Sunday afternoons, playing mainstream type jazz. Today is Buckley's last show. Now there are those detractor
  19. Andres Segovia - M. Castelnuovo-Tedesco Concerto in D Major. LouieB
  20. The price of gas is coming down just in time for me to drive east...yea...!!!! LouieB
  21. It is inevitable that the older generation of musicians is going to pass on, but Chicago born and bred Johnny Griffin passed away this week. Griffin, known by the nickname "Little Giant" was one of the last links to the great Captain Walter Dyett, band leader at DuSable High School in Chicago. Griffin was not only known for his playing, but also for his expatriotism when he resettled in France. Attached at the bottom is the article from Howard Reich in the Trib this morning, since all the basic facts are there. Von and George Freeman both get quoted in it. This leaves Von as one of the las
  22. I have to say the Millenium Park gig las summer had a bit of a weird vibe. Playing to 10,000 people outdoors in their hometown had to be a bit of a trip even for a seasoned band like Wilco. LouieB
  23. We were selling a couple of his albums on LP at Pitchfork. I had not seen one of them, but I didn't snatch it. I already had the one with this song on it and it's frankly the best and most memorable thing he ever did. LouieB
