Yea, let's go with Jeff (Steve Earle gave it a try..) Jeff is already more famous than Woody Guthrie was when he was alive....(Woody never had much of a recording career actually...Jeff has already made and sold more records...)_ LouieB

Thats the real beauty of an LP....that you know the surface as well as the music itself. Everyone can talk about how much better LPs sound (maybe and maybe not), but every LP has a feel that goes beyond the actual sound. LouieB

Yea, that is my rule too.....I have broken that rule a few times of late since prices are out of hand. (Frankly more than 5 or 6 for an album that may have cost 3 or 4 new is more than I like.) LouieB

Where to start with The Grateful Dead?

True...I just never thought of them as an epiphany generating band, especially on that song.... LouieB -
How much will you pay?? I have seen some Grape on occasion lately. LouieB

You may not....Chicago has changed dramatically in the last decade. Hope Pfork weekend isn't too hot. I screwed up and didnt get tickets, but then again I am still worn out from last year. LouieB

No offense comrade, but if you needed that song for an epiphany, things must be looking pretty bleak. LouieB -
Speaking of legendary Chicago jazz musicians, Johnny Frigo passed away yesterday. Another great loss. Not only was he a great violinist, but also a composer, bass player (he claimed to have played on more jingle sessions than anyone in history), poet and story teller. This is a great lose; hopefully others here had a chance to see him. He was great fun. LouieB

True indeed (they are the same people who have never heard of Wilco too.... ) I know plenty of people here and elsewhere who have long ago given up vinyl records. Some are now trying to re-buy records they had in the past. Others have LPs but don't have a workable turntable and others simply buy them for the hell of it and don't play them. LouieB

I thought the record fair was really good last year. Lots of great vendors. The Crowne is right in Greek town, so there are all kinds of great places to eat in close walking distance. LouieB

There are people who believe that LPs were a significantly inferior technology to 78, yet 78s never returned. I don't disagree that LPs sound great, but that was because I grew up with them. The numbers of people who believe that LPs sound better than CDs is still small compared to the over all number of people buying recorded music. Those people are generally either audiophiles (not me) or those who have a nostalgia thing for LPs (like me.) The number of people who believe that LPs are the way to go is going to continue to decline, despite the current hipness of LPs. Only really aware mu

I love these discussions. Vinyl's moment has been gone for 20 years, with a slight resurgence in the last 10 years. Compared to the entire number of CDs sold, vinyl is a very very small percentage. Sure it sell more than it did 5 yeears ago, but barel anything compared to 25 years ago. It is simply part of the collectable market, not the mainstream. Also you can't make me believe that the collectable market is dwindling when LPs that sold for 4 or 5 bucks a few years back are now goging for 8 to 10. I suppose if all you are talking about is high end stuff, which I don't collect, but for t

I buy vinyl too, but mostly used. If CDs disappear vinyl will surely follow. The vinyl market is experiencing a momentary blip of resurgence (inflating the used market in ways it never was before), but don't expect this to last forever. LouieB

Workingman's and American Beauty are their finest studio albums for sure. Live in Europe is my favorite live album. That point of view may also be true. The Dead (don't anyone stone me....so to speak), were not the world's greatest band music wise. Even Garcia admitted they werent' always on. But as a cultural institution they had few peers. I guess I find it strange that someone hasn't heard that much of the Dead. Generation gap I guess. LouieB -
Actually the entire band it wicked good. Mike Raynor, the drummer is amazing as well. He is in two other groups, one that plays rock and one that plays country. I didn't know either one however. Von's paranoia was stunning actually; which is why I wrote about it. Let's do this again soon......I keep feeling like time is short for these gigs. I had fun as well...reallly great. LouieB

There will be another time I hope. Von is starting to show the years. At 85 he has lost a step or two since his 70s which were monumental (as were his 60s and 50s from what I saw.) Kris and I had an interesting conversation with him at the end of the night. Kris had been nice enough to download and burn me a CD of a show Von and Johnny Griffin did with a Dutch rhythm section in 1999. Great show of some standards and modern jazz material; good stuff. We played it on they way in the driving rain in a death defying trip down the Ryan. When Von came he we said hello and chatted back and

Wow..fun night...I don't know if this will take, so I am not writing more.LouieBOh it did.....wow..large contingent of VCers tonight.....thanks for comign out everyone. I am hung over...on 1.5 beers..lightweight. Von and the band were fun. Talked to Von a bunch. It was a fairly low key night and the second band was actually pretty good last night. Great place to spend a rainy night in Chicago. Let's do this again sometime soon.LouieB
