Don't forget "Visions of Gerard" also.... Steinbeck was my favorite author growing up. Of Mice and Men and Cannery Row are excellent. Both are great authors. Nice to see the original version of OTR finally make it to print. LouieB

I saw that at the HOF years ago. The funniest thing about that exhibit was the security system that kept saying "step away from the exhibit". It also had Elvis' report cards from school and other such stuff. LouieB

The first book is a masterpiece, the second is a tawdery tragedy as you would expect. LouieB

I don't disagree with this at all, but both Dylan and Cash were lucky enough to not kill themselves. Neither had the drug problem that Elvis did, although certainly Johnny came close. It took Johnny a couple decades to re-emerge as a force in music. Some people think Dylan never has had much good going on since the 70s and even he feels like there were some fairly fallow periods during the 80s and 90s. Elvis continued to pack them in to his shows no matter how falling down/fucked up he was and no matter how short his sets were. The core base of fans never left Elvis, but he was certainly

It is possible, except things were moving pretty fast in 1977 and Elvis was clearly old school at that point. Surely he could have gotten a jump start to his career a la Johnny Cash and American Recordings, but if the Col Parker had still been around, that would not have happened either. If the first half of Peter Guarlnick's bio is enlightening and a revelation about Elvis, the second half is every bit as distressing and depressing as one can imagine. LouieB

Dying was Elvis' best career move. He was totally washed up when he died, a joke at best. Most of us didn't even care about him at that point; I will even admit to not even being interested in him at that point either; now I am. Most people even on this board would not have been interested in him in 77, since there were far more interesting things happening at that point. As with many musicians, dying helps. LouieB

If you like Monk, also check out Lennie Tristano and don't forget Bill Evans. Clifford Brown was terrific. So was Fats Navarro a few years earlier. LouieB

That's an okay one, but doesn't deal much with the actual sessions, but it is fun enough. The section in the book called Bob Dylan recording sessions by Clinton Heylin is quite good on this. LouieB

I will have to check out those other movies. The Dylan story is pretty cinematic just as a straight story. Clint Eastwood made a mess of the Charlie Parker story, another great story that needed little help to be compelling. So I guess we shall see. LouieB

This album will be great (Tweedy doing Simple Twist of Fate I think I read), but is anyone but me scared this movie is going to be an unholy mess?? I tried watching the Velvet Goldmine by this same director and the fuckin thing was pretty much unwatchable as far as I was concerned and I liked the idea of a story about Bowie and Iggy. I mean it sounds like a good idea to have Dylan played by several actors, but somehow the concept could fall apart in practice. We shall see. LouieB

Mine too.... Robbie didn't kill Manuel; Manuel killed Manuel. Sadly mental illness knows no boundries. Robbie may be a tool but the guy wrote some great songs and helped make the Band what they were. They had a great run, what else do we need. Hell even the Beatles didn't stay together forever. Sadly the Band DID continue without Robbie and the result was not always pretty. LouieB

Me too.....it was still in the original format with the picture on the outside and the front page inside the fold and then opening like a tabloid. LouieB
