Sorry for being so thin skinned the other day. Tom Russell was a recommendation that Guitready made to me and he is very good. There are just so many great songwriters that never get discussed here and Townes does get mentioned a bunch (though not as often as Nick Drake I suppose.) My goodness the entire Texas songwriter community is full of great ones (Guy Clark, Robert Earl Keene, Joe Ely, Butch Hancock, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Alejandro Escovedo, Rodney Crowell, Billy Joe Shaver, Doug Sahm, Waylon Jennings, etc. etc.) it is just that Townes isn't the only game in town, although he clearly i

I was there last night and will be there again today, since I am volunteering. Maybe it was my lousy day at work or maybe it was simply that none of the acts last night were all that exciting or maybe I have just been to too many events of late; but being there wasn't that thrilling for me. I enjoyed the Scotland Yard Gospel Choir, but the band was hassling the crowd for being too quiet. The 1900s seemed okay and Bloc Party was good up close (but I was in front of the speakers...), but stopped being as good as I moved back and the evening wore on. Look for me at the front door this aftern

Strangely after hearing TG rip him these last few years, I am beginning to see her point. If Tom Joad was the last record to captivate you...well..that says alot...(Tunnel of Love may be his last really good album.) LouieB

Jeff Tweedy and Ryan Adams should write an album together.
LouieB replied to hummingBERG's topic in Someone Else's Song
There are so many great musicans and songwriters that Jeff is close to and would make great music with it is hard to conceive of any reason to do anything with Ryan Adams. I am waiting for the Califone and/ or Handsome Family collaboration myself. LouieB -
Exactly...I was just slightly offended by the starter of this thread.....clearly someone coming in to prove how cool they are, when Townes has been discussed here many times. There is very little music any longer that someone doesn't know about and Townes' profile, as pointed out, has only grown in recent years not diminished. The re-release of Heartworn Highways and the bio flick (which I think we would all agree is excellent) helped also. I heard from him a year or so ago. Guess he doesn't come around here much but he was (is) a nice guy and his knowledge of the Texas songwriters is va

Where to start with The Grateful Dead?
LouieB replied to reverandgroove's topic in Someone Else's Song
Yea, really....the first three or so albums are much more important. The first two live albums are both important as well. LouieB -
The over produced criticism will always dog this album (even in Jeff's eyes I bet...), but it doesn't matter to me. I love the sound of it. The profusion of vintage keyboards and other effects are great. If Being There was Wilco's breakthrough and YHF, Wilco's magnum opus, Summerteeth marks Wilco's arrival as a great and enduring band. I wouldn't want it any other way. It may also be Jay Bennett's claim to fame. LouieB

Yea, it has that Langfordian style. He has done many covers for things of late. Actually I have an album or two I am shocked that he did the cover art for including Cash Money and Hound Dog Taylor. In any event I nearly ordered this thing off Amazon, but maybe it will be available soon domestically. (Did this thread prove yet that VC knows and loves Townes enough or are we still a bunch of know nothing rubes????) LouieB

This does look good. has this been released in Europe or what?? There is at least one other tribute to Townes that is pretty good, but more mainstream than this. LouieB

Guy Clark is certainly one of Townes biggest promoters....and luckily much more alive... You know it. Nearly all singers have a style that becomes identifiable after awhile and Townes certainly had an identifiable style. (A Leonard Cohen song is clearly one of his no matter who singes it, same with Richard Thompson, etc. etc.) Some of Townes songs are clearly better than others. Listening to the sum total of his Tomato years studio work can be a bit overwhelming. Many songs do sound alike, but the stand outs are incredible. LouieB

Not to belabor this point, but back in the day (Wendy knows this..) Stevie had a bunch of really great singles so don't miss out on them while trying to get his best mid-career albums. I don't know how they are packaged, but the old Motown collections on LP were great. Maybe they have some of those still available in some configuration. LouieB

Wow, reserecting an old thread like this...nice work. Lunch?? LouieB

I should hope so.... LouieB

Exactly. The albums on Tamla just prior to and just after (but not long after) Songs in the Key of Life are all great. The three LP set of Stevie's work on Motown proper is also worth having. LouieB

Townes got regular shout outs here over the years. He is certainly not unknown to VCers or anyone else. The fact remains that many VCers are not that into country music in general and alt.country has fallen out of favor a bit. The Bob Dylan's coffee table is a funny quote. About the time that surfaced I saw Earle open for Bob Dylan. (It was quoted on the front of a Townes album also.) The only reason you wouldn't have gotten any results on Townes may be that this site has crashed several times over the years and perhaps the files that could be reached by the search engine you used. Robyn Hitchcock...Sex, Food, Drugs & Insects

I just got done listening to the stream. Except for a few minutes when I went out to get some food, this has been on....lotsa streaming to say the least... LouieB -
Yea, I have checked the site on occasion. This does have the Klezmatics and Wilco, but it doesn't seem to reference some of the other stuff mentioned in the article. At least it has some of the stuff for sale including the earlier tribute concerts that was jam packed with celebs. It is good to see that the Country Joe material is back in print. It is one of my favorite album of Woody's songs; great arrangements with veteran Nashville session folks. Wow, the wire recording is $30!! What's with that? Wasn't it given to the foundation? LouieB
