This is where I put my vote in for the greatest drummer on the planet...Hamid Drake.... LouieB

Yea, me too.... LouieB

It was my first one too, but I like the others as well. Both of the solo albums by them are good as well. We talked about this in some thread a few years back. I like Old Paint very much too. LouieB

I saw these guys open for the Autumn Defense and they blew the home town boys out of the water.... LouieB

I am on my extended camp out in Springfield and it is amazing what knowing I am leaving this job makes. I actually don't need one medication (not Xanax, which I have never taken, but needed) that I have been taking for one year. LouieB

I have my ticket for the late show, but I am not sure if I can actually make it. Either way I get his album. LouieB

Personally I agree, but if you don't like waltz time mountain music you won't like Freakwater. I happen to like it, so I like them alot. LouieB

I rarely see these in any store, in fact I only saw them at Tower Records one time and they closed down. I can't imagine many of them are that good. It seems to me that now there are so many, about some rather unimportant albums, what exactly is the point. LouieB

Man..someone hand me a beer.... LouieB

Who's the coolest woman in music history?
LouieB replied to the letter k's topic in Someone Else's Song
Yup Definitely... Bessie Smith.... LouieB -
One of my personal favorites...was listening to Beet the other day. A touch or two of Wilco in them I think. LouieB

You got it...great suggestion. LouieB

From about the same time...The Beat Farmers and Rank and File. LouieB

Very cool.....while 1957 doesn't seem that long ago, things sure have changed alot in the past 50 years. It would have been cooler to wait 100 years for this however, when no one would remember 1957. LouieB

A-man and I are in agreement on this. For me finding UT, the Bottle Rockets and the Jayhawks (and the Waco Brothers) was a great discovery. I was still following some bands, but this was a very exciting development for me musically. LouieB

I get the New Yorker, so I will look for it. There was also one in the Reader last week too, that was quite good. This should be an interesting change. Meanwhile I will be in Springfield for the next 2.5 weeks wrapping up my old job. LouieB

You learn something new every day. I only know Spooner/Firetown by virtue of their recordings. Did Phil Gnarly have records? LouieB See the alt.country thread. OMDD were okay for the time and a country rock band for sure. If we are dragging out the oldies, I could name a ton of crazy stuff no one really wants to hear. (I threatened to do that a few years ago...) LouieB

What he said...alot of what people are calling alt.country is either rock or country (The Carter Family alt.country?? I think not...Johnny Cash??...as country as it gets unless you count the American Recordings material.) Bruce, Neil, Gram etc. are certainly not alt.country. Nor is Big Star even close to alt.country. And with all due respect to my buddy Mountain Bed, New Riders was country rock, a great genre that flourished in the 70s along with Poco and a bunch of other great bands and not so great bands. Alt country didn't really come around until the late 80s or even early 90s. Fo

Really?? I would have to say they seem like they are being pretty good to him. LouieB

Well sure you would, if you are old enough. I tracked down both early Spooner albums on both LP and CD and both Fire Town LPs. The second Spooner album was always touted as hot stuff by the Illinois Entertainer. I liked the third Spooner CD as well. LouieB

I think VWs handle like crap period. My only real experience with new VWs was a station wagon my bro-in-law had that had more problems with it, some of which were handled under warrenty, but eventually he simply had to dump the thing. LouieB

I have always wanted to write about Butch Vig's two bands prior to Garbage. Both were straight ahead midwestern rock. The first (and third) was called Spooner and the second was called Fire Town. LouieB

I drove a new "Bug" one time (or maybe a couple) and it handled like crap..... Of course, I have driven many an old bug and a few VW buses too in my time...... LouieB

Okay, so like I didn't know who these guys were before, but after doing several videos of shows they played, I can't get their music out of my head..... The Chamber Strings.... LouieB

Thanks for posting the links....I would not have gone looking for them myself. Nice to know that VW/Wilco fans are guys with beards......I guess I am in the demographic.... LouieB
