That may have been the correct decision, but not keeping them in the classrooms uninformed. That was dumb. Sure....all that is true, but once again, people unaware are more likely to be victims than those who are aware. LouieB

As always, every goddam nutcase in the world will do some sort bullshit after having seen this. LouieB

It would have been far safer to send everyone home, meaning to their off campus homes or the dorms. Like I said, that was no guarantee, but informing people by email and not sending out a general full campus alert to be on the lookout for some guy with a gun was just plain dumb. Of course more people very well could have been killed, but if they weren't in a vulnerable position (uninformed) and in one place (classrooms), the kind of bloodshed that did occur would not have occured. In most schools the minute something relatively serious goes on, everyone knows and if it is a life threateni

This is the worst security gaff ever. Once a murder that was so unclear occured, the campus should have been locked down immediately, which should have included canceling of all classes and everyone put on alert. The daughter of a friend of mine is on a campus on the east coast where a suicide occured and the campus was immediately locked down while they figured out how the person died. You just can't wait hours and assume that whatever occured is all that is going to occur. You would think with all the homeland security crap that goes on now after 9/11 that everyone would be way smarter

This is why discussing this in moral terms will eventually lead nowhere. LouieB

I don't know that any of this is morally wrong.....morals are nearly always subjective. Burning a copy for a friend is okay if your friend wants to know if they should then buy the CD. In the good old days we used to tape albums for people. I did in fact sometimes buy the albums that were taped for me if I liked them enough or if in some cases I could find them (things went out of print a bit quicker in the vinyl age.) LouieB

That could be part of it, but either way, even the new band members don't have to seem so disconnected. There was a distinct moment this summer at Randolph St. where the band clearly showed some interest after an hour of workman like playing and that was when the old songs began to be played. Band members actually smiled at one another for the first time and they started looking like they were actually enjoying being on stage. I realize that there are groups where you are supposed to appear stoic and not show emotion, but that whole thing is BS as far as I am concerned. Playing music in

Wishful thinking...also the construction on the Brown line which is going slow. (Actually the Ryan is not so bad compared to what it could have been.) Hmmm...9 years....should be fun, but a long time from now. LouieB

i commented on another thread about the Chicago show..... I thought they were better at the Randolph St. fest last summer. All in all there seems to be little enthusiasm from the band until they launch into songs from Trace, which the audience knows and likes hearing. There seemed to be some buzz around SV I which is lacking in SV II. As I also said before, I think I am done with Jay.... LouieB

I thought they sounded great as well...just a touch repetetive... And actually for Jay he was fairly chatty the other night. I just wish he had a bit more to say, not a lecture, just something.... LouieB

I saw SV on Monday...I enjoyed the show, but I think I am done with Jay for good. The guy said nearly nothing, except that he liked being in Chicago, and so many of the songs sounded alike. Finally at the end he played some stuff from Trace and the crowd woke up. Chicamunga was good too. The new record is getting universally luke warm reviews........ LouieB

I was thinking about that show last night, because when they played the Metro there was a relatively small crowd...not unlike the one for Low I saw the same place last night. Sometimes you never know who will attract a crowd. LouieB

We haven't had this kind of discussion since the last presidential election.... LouieB

I suppose if you are asking serious question, you deserve a serious answer.... That is the non-insulting answer. For a long time black people were ashamed of having hair like this and calling someone nappy headed was a major insult. There was(and still is) a large cosmetics industry dedicated to straightening black hair and thus giving someone "good" hair(straight hair like white people have) as opposed to not good hair . It is like alot of inside ethnic expressions, if you are from the outside, you don't want to be calling someone something that may (or may not) be okay to say to someone.

Take two.....I don't disagree that everyone has overreacted to this and that Imus should not have been fired (I am no fan, but I am a fan of free speech.) My point is, that there are some expressions that are so loaded (such as "you people" when refering to African Americans, etc.) that after a certain point Imus should have stopped trying to justify what he said. He fucked up using the expression "nappy headed" so he should have said, sorry...bad choice of words and not spoken to Sharpton at all. LouieB
-
Imus must be an idiot to keep using expressions like "you people" that are so loaded. Sharpton is clearly taking advantage of him at every turn. Imus' biggest mistake was figuring as a white guy he could use a expression like "nappy headed" without getting shit for it. LouieB

Yea, things might have changed. The Empty Bottle used to do weekly improv/free jazz and hosted a great fest each year, but that seems to have pretty much stopped as well. Considering everything, I think that the audience for this type of thing is perhaps smaller than it used to be. The Wednesday night series at the Hideout is amazing, but never crowded. LouieB
