  1. Things must be really bad in NYC if this is the only club that offers this type of music that seats over 90 people. Chicago has at least three venues like this that have free jazz shows on a regular basis (the new Velvet Lounge, The Hideout and the Empty Bottle {although not so often at the Empty Bottle any more}) and several loft spaces that I suppose qualify as the afore mentioned smaller spaces of less than 90 people. Did I forget to mention the Hot House, which is similar and not for profit. (Doesn't the Knitting Factory present this type of music?) Tonic may want to talk to the Vel
  2. the waiting only has to do with the fact that I am in Chicago, rather than the east coast, otherwise I would order them immediately. LouieB
  3. Sometime next week I would guess.... LouieB
  4. I was going to order, but this a GA show and there seems to be no rush at the moment. How big a place is this?? LouieB
  5. Actually all that I know about Imus is from listening to Stern bad-rap him all these years.....I wish I could hear Stern's take on this. Is he supporting Imus now or not? Stern is fairly hypocritical anyway so he might not support him. LouieB
  6. Really....otherwise what is the point??? LouieB
  7. Slaughterhouse 5 is one of the greatest books ever. I had not realized until the story running in the Trib today that he had also worked at the City News Bureau here in Chicago for awhile. Many of the greats did time at City News, which is also long gone. RIP to Kurt.. he apparently tried to take his own life a couple decades ago. LouieB
  8. I got my four CDs yesterday and a free comp and sticker....thanks again for the heads up. LouieB
  9. The more I thought about this, the stranger this thread becomes with people freaking out over the closing of one club. Tonic has been in business, what? 9 years? If the Village Vangard closed that would be something, but this is just run of the mill stuff. When one club closes, another usually starts to book acts that would have played there. (I assume the Knitting Factory is still open and going strong...) There was alot of crying when Lounge Ax here in Chicago went out of business, but other venues picked up the bookings and bands kept playing Chicago. It is sad to see a space that mea
  10. The world is ending...(or maybe Cary and Laurie need some bread...) Schubas it is..... LouieB
  11. This was a thread a few years back...I simply can't remember any more. Depends on what you call real. Did we have to buy the album ourselves? The first two I remember buying myself were The Best of Buffalo Springfield and Three Dog Night's first album. LouieB
  12. I'm there......I missed the AGIB event... LouieB
  13. I miss tons of shows.....frankly I was shocked I dragged my sorry ass out of the house to this one, but it was worth it. Jason's band was very good, but you are right, he doesn't seem totally comfortable up front yet. I would have liked to hear more of the DBT stuff, but clearly he is pushing a new album. The guitar player covering Psycho Killer was fun. SV did go on and on; my problem with them (although I enjoyed the show plenty) was that so many songs still sound alike, but when Jay went into the more recognizable stuff (from Trace and Okemah) the audience came alive. 14. I totally agree. The reason clubs close down (wasn't Tonic a club???) is because it is simply a place of business subject to the economic ebbs and flows of any business. Heck CBGBs is (was) an internationally famous club and it closed down. (So did Lounge Ax!!!) No one stopped that from closing down. Venues come and go, it is all part of it. Not for profits have a benefit of tax deductions, etc. to attract donors, many times really big donors. Really big not for profits (Lincoln Center) have a wide and varied fund raising strategy to make sure they stay open year after year. Clubs are li
  15. I hate this as always....I got row Z, tried again and it refused to let me try....oh well..... Guess I won't go. Davenport here I come..... LouieB
  16. Can we talk about the album again?? LouieB
  17. Not all that different really. Someone has to pull together a down-payment and pay a morgage payment each month. Either way someone has to have some cash. On top of it an owner has to deal with the rest of the building, etc. The Velvet Lounge here actually managed to raise funds for the build-out, but they are still renting as far as I know. Buying a building is no small matter, particularly in a large city with high property values and rising taxes. LouieB
  18. He was quite good opening for Son Volt here in Chicago last night too.... I don't know how he feels about the split, but he played a Patterson Hood song here.... LouieB
  19. I am going to assume this is a joke... LouieB
  20. My only other experience with this band is their version of Blowin in the Wind on Duluth Does Dylan, which is a fun tribute album in general anyway. I certainly am looking forward to trying to get tickets for these shows...(let the craziness begin again...) LouieB
  21. d'oh...of course....thanks....clearly I wasn't thinking before writing.... Things we lost in the fire is also excellent...actually those are the only two of their albums I know. LouieB
  22. Well yea.... I am guessing few club owners can afford the buildings they are in when a neighborhood starts to change or gentrify. I am always shocked that even retail businesses, long term ones at that, find it difficult to actually purchase their places of business. The best solution is to buy a building, but clubs are usually not in a position to do that. LouieB
  23. Maybe Rudy is to blame, but that kind of gentrification is going on everywhere in the USA, both urban, rural, and suburban. The overarching problem is that non-stop development is more important than anything. The Jazz Showcase was a one of a kind club which featured nationally famous jazz acts and despite having been in many locations in Chicago, was probably the longest running club anywhere. It had a sweet location on the near north side that attracted both locals and tourists, yet it closed down. The Velvet Lounge, alsoa one of a kind club here, was forced out by development and was
  24. Plenty of used copies around too....$5.50 on Amazon. I am also sure there are copies of No Alternative around too..I see them pretty frequently. LouieB
