  1. Just make them up as you go.... LouieB
  2. What a pain in the ass these things were. Sometimes you would put them in, but they would be difficult to take out. I suppose this was someone's idea of a good idea when 45s were invented, but I never really understood the purpose of the large hole. Or as some DJ was saying on the radio today, many people now don't understand the concept of the "B" side anymore. LouieB
  3. How old are you?? Nope sorry....I was already a full blow teenager when you were born. There are some of these that I don't remember when they were released, but I do remember alot of them. LouieB
  4. Not to worry, we don't have a movie or music "industry" here, so he will undoubtedly remain in LA where he belongs. But it was genuinely moving to hear him talk about how much he likes Chicago, not simply because he was having a ball playing here, that could happen anywhere, but because how unique Chicago seems to him. I wish I could actually completely agree with him, but just as every metropolitan (and small and medium town for that matter) area is now becoming one homoginized mess, Chicago is not that different. The entire uniqueness of Chicago, while still evident, is slow (or not so sl
  5. Not exactly oldies, but great stuff....(well old, but not oldies...) The sad part about this conversation is I remember many of these when they weren't oldies, but were newies..... LouieB
  6. yea, at first it is tough figuring out where it is headed, but once it does it is pretty cool. LouieB
  7. I love it too..couldn't get it out of my head all weekend.... (does anyone care that I will be near Pekin this week??) Louieb
  8. Where did you grow up?? In the city or suburbs?? This is a small park on the west side as mentioned. Probably the reason you don't know it is that as someone pointed out, it really isn't that good a place to be after dark, but the neighborhood around it is beginning to gentrify, so in a few years it may be different. The heat last year was exhausting. LouieB
  9. Exactly. While that isn't "dark", it is resigned. I have always said I don't believe that these songs entirely represent Jeff's state of mind exactly, because I do think he is certianly happy, but I am sure like all of us, as we get older, we take the small things to be thankful for and try and look at things as positively as we can, even in bad times. LouieB
  10. Jeff does read this stuff on occasion, just so you know.... After a couple listens only I was sort of shocked at how dark some of the lyrics really are. Frankly they are darker than I was expecting in a way. Clearly they are not as dark as earlier Wilco material, but there is a certain resignation to some of the songs and something of the singer (not necessarily Jeff) trying to have a good attitude in the face of day to day life. I love the laundry song, whatever it is called (sorry I am not up to speed on all the titles yet.) LouieB
  11. Now I have to keep this copy for posterity. I have not tried it in any other CD player than the portable one i have in the car. I really like this album a bunch, but then I had no intention of not liking it. LouieB
  12. It did the same thing the second time I played it too, but by then I was a bit smarter.... I guess this is why you have to buy the real album.... LouieB
  13. Yea, I don't know why I keep spelling it with the "h". Gotta get the h outta here I guess. LouieB
  14. Back in the late 50s and early 60s Fred was the man in Greenwich Village. Interesting stuff about him in Dave Van Ronk's autobiography. I have original vinyl copies of a couple of his albums, not in very good shape though. LouieB
  15. I saw all the same stuff you did except for the Steve Earle set. In the strangest instance that day was Joe Henry in a side tent with virtually no one there to see him. Even I found it dull (and I like him) and went back to the main stage. LouieB
  16. No they certainly didn't play that one. This was the one at Arlington Racetrack the year before. Having seen McGowan the previous year give an incredible performance and also after sitting in the mud most of the day, I went and saw John Prine and left that one. All in all both were fun, but both very different. LouieB
  17. Actually they did. At the first one at any rate both Wilco, Billy Bragg and McGowan and the Popes were there. LouieB
  18. XRT will undoubted play this as it gets closer to the actual release date and after. It is easy to dis XRT, but they do play Wilco with some regularity. LouieB
  19. I listened to it twice. Once on the way to Springfield and once on the way back. I had a funny thing happen though. As it was going into the 12th track (on and on and on) on my first listen, the intro of keyboards and drums seemed to go into this weird drone of sorts with snippets of keyboards and what sounded like handclapping. I thought " I didn't know this album had a drone like AGIB" and was kind of digging it for about 5 minutes when I realized that it wasn't a drone at all, the copy I had is defective and it was skipping over and over again. Pretty funny, I fast forwarded it a co

    wow

One of my absolute faves on BT. LouieB
  21. The Hideout certainly is one of the coolest places on the planet. Where else does one of the best vocalist in the country (Kelly Hogan) tend bar when not out on tour?? It was nice to see and talk to her. What a night...I am still trying to recover. Funniest moment.....John revealing the words of the Bee Gee's "Staying Alive." Absolutely hysterical. LouieB
  22. Oh man..you are so right.....and during the week, what is exactly the point of that? We have had this convo before, but if clubs and groups want to attract a wider audience, they really should can the musican time and go with human being time. They would get a more diverse audience and maybe fill up the clubs better. I know here in Chicago some clubs have gone to all ages shows because they realize that even steady 20 somethings who usually fill their clubs are going to become 30 something and start having kids and stop going out all the time. Meanwhile the older folks (like me) don't com
  23. I have a phonograph...OH you mean the group...(couldn't they have thought of a better wacky name like the Swimming Pool Qs...oh that was taken....) LouieB
  24. I can't even read these articles anymore. It is like the scene out of Patton where he is tellling off an injured soldier. I suppose in an all out war (which this now is) we don't have the luxury of only sending fresh troops; also the injured go back. Reinstitute the draft....that will get us fresh troops and maybe a bit more protest too. LouieB
