What albums are you looking forward to this year?
LouieB replied to remphish1's topic in Someone Else's Song
And they are out on tour as well. LouieB -
Sorry if you tuned in to the Classical show, but we were preempted by Women's Basketball. BUT January 3 at 12-2 central time (www.wnur.org or 89.3 or TuneIn) I am going to joined by Chicago rocker Alex White (White Mystery and Ms Alex White and the Red Orchestra) to spin 45s. We will be playing old rock, soul, pop, and garage rock for two straight hours. Should be a really fun time with friendly banter and lost of talk about the rock life style. Don't miss this one. The world lost many famous musical figures this year, but lost in shuffle are the classical composers and performers who graced concert stages. So on Classical and Beyond this Saturday December 31, 2016 we will be featuring works or performances by some of these figures including Pierre Boulez. Tune in at 1-4 PM on wnur.org for our take on the losses from 2016. This is actually much more interesting than you may think. LouieB

My December 27, 2016 show (12-2 PM Central time on www.wnur.org or Tunein) will be a slapdash affair with cuts from recently acquired records of different sorts including brand new material, older material, and various odds and ends. I've been too busy to put together a cogent show, but it should be interesting none the less. New material from Thrill Jockey label, new Leonard Cohen and plenty of old country, soul, jazz, and folk. Just tune in and find out what I end up with. Edit - Also a special segment on the late Alphonse Mouzon who died December 26. LouieB

i saw them live but not heard their record and they were just fine, but not fantastic. Band names are a tough go anymore. When someone picks a really good one I am frankly shocked. LouieB

Okay Sure. By the way this show will run from 12-3 Central time. Everyone can catch part of the Christmas show today December 20. LouieB

Yea, I remembered that yesterday. I kept thinking the Felice Brothers and knew that was wrong. Joe did some writing I understand as well. Either way they were THE band of the moment about 15 years ago. Will have to drag their records off the shelf and give them a quick listen I guess. LOuieB

What newish bands did you get into this year?
LouieB replied to remphish1's topic in Someone Else's Song
Go post that in the thread about them and get accused of being a troll please so I am not the only one. I learned about Hurray for the Riff Raff. They seem pretty good. LouieB -
REM's Superman before: https://youtu.be/IyfDH0HKLjs I have an unbelievably beat up 45 of this. LouieB

Saying someone is awesome because UB40 covered one of their songs is not exactly high praise. Neil Diamond was a great songwriter. Many of his songs have stood the test of time. LouieB

Before I forget, My show tomorrow 12/20 will be Christmas/Chanukah music. Tune in for all your faves on www.wnur.org at 12-2 PM Central time. You know the usual and the unusual in rock, pop, blues, country, and jazz. Should be fun. LouieB

Beach Slang (big year for Beach named groups) Bleached Flat Five (not really new) LouieB -
Well I'm still being considered a troll by some obviously. I'm not dissing these folks at all, yet the sheer crush of new bands and music in every year will insure that a significant number of bands are temporary and ephemeral and long forgotten in five years, or at least inactive. All musicians are subject to being refound and having career surges later in life, but most go by the wayside. Good on those who take up each new buzz band and give them some attention, they need that attention and the financial enumeration that comes with it because we all know the music business is brutal. My blurb on this week's Show Classical and beyond airs at 1-4 PM central time, this Saturday, December 17, 2016 at 1-4 PM central time on www.wnur.org, 89.3, or Tunein. Cohosts John Martin and Lou Berkman will be spinning classical style and actual classical Christmas music from various musical periods. This will include performances by the Wicker Park Choral Singers, Jessye Norman, Elizabeth Schwartzkoff, Thijs Van Leer, Anonymous 4, Philadelphia Orchestra, and Elly Ameling among many others. This will be a festive tour through many periods, languages, and styles of music from the Renaissa

Great job. These folks are even necessarily conservative in the strict sense of the word. LouieB

Missed that. They come and go so quickly. LouieB

Has anyone mentioned that Neil has ANOTHER new album? It already got crappy reviews. LouieB

I had a couple friends go recently. You have to have a reason to go, you can't just go as a tourist. When you figure out how to go, let me know, I want to go too. LouieB

Call the venue first just in case. When I used to take my daughter (formerly Tweedy's Gurl) most places let her in with me, but some didn't. LouieB

What took you so long! Classic albums you just discovered
LouieB replied to remphish1's topic in Someone Else's Song
You know its funny, since the vinyl resurgence all these LPs that were so common now sell for relatively high prices at actual record stores. Used to be they were really cheap and easy to find. Tapestry is still easy to find, but many albums less so. I noticed that the store I am working at now was selling Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians for nearly 10 bucks. Crazy. LouieB -
Missed last week due to a short illness, but back December 6 with essentially the same show, plus some Shrine Soul. Gonna be fun. 12-2 Tuesday (Tomorrow). LouieB

Hey folks. I am on twice tomorrow December 3. First at 7-9 AM doing a mixtape show with a couple of my music friends from Chicago. They have picked out material from a wide variety of artists you all know. Wake up and be surprised. Also I am doing a three hour Classical Show at 1-4 PM featuring the music of Steve Reich. This is very cool stuff so don't miss it. Remember this all comes to you on TuneIn (WNUR) or www.wnur.org or if you are in Chicago, 89.3 These shows are going to be great so if you like modern classical and slightly drone based material check me out at 1, but if you like hea
