Early warning on what should be an interesting show featuring the work of Julius Eastman. I did not know much about this composer/performer until recently, but Eastman was an African American who never had any of his own work released during his lifetime, but has had a three CD and single CD released in the past 10 years. He died in his forties and was a minimalist, although not in the same sense as Glass and Reich. His compositions have a particular political bent as well; with references to both his race and his sexual orientation. The show is this Saturday March 11 from 1-4 PM CT on wnur

I am back on wnur.org tomorrow at 12 central time February 28 with a Midday Mixtape show dedicated to Black History Month. Look to hear mostly familiar artist including an entire segment of spoken word material. There should be a few things I play you may not have heard before. Should be fun and enlightening. LouieB

Let's get back to Wilco and politics for a minute. At the final Winterlude show last night Jeff told a heartfelt story about his elderly father being distraught about the travel ban. He also suggested that he hoped that Trump supporting Wilco fans would come to their senses at some point. Kudos to Jeff for being an artists who can speak up on these matters in an even handed and humanistic way. I guess if you want to know exactly what he said you will have to find a copy of the show. Nice recap Paul. This was the only show I saw on this run and I was going to blow off the entire thing, but glad I picked what seemed to be a great night. After listening to the lack luster show on Saturday, I think they pulled it together. Glad for the political banter personally. The story about his father was heartfelt and genuinely moving. Thanks Jeff for sharing that and putting Trump supporters in their place (wherever right wing Wilco fans go.) LouieB

I don't get it either. This is endemic to all rock shows really and we have discussed it here at VC for years. But with these shows at a really nice and expensive venue, it is impossible to understand why people are dicks. A kid and his father talked to each other throughout the show last night (Sunday). Great show though in general. LouieB

Blues Fest better be free. I have only gone a couple times in the last few years. It is much more crowded (at least it was at the old Grant Park location) than Jazz Fest which I attend every year. While Pritzger is much nicer, it is also smaller in total area and Blues Fest tends to be a bit more raucous than Jazz Fest. The upshot? Don't know exactly. I agree that you should not necessarily have a problem getting a seat, but you may have to wait in line. And you will be surrounded by people drinking and partying quite a bit. Don't miss the side stages which often have very fun performe

Getting back into vinyl is a pricey proposition, with most LPs being in the 20-30 range. Always consider buying used LPs if you can, but I concur, don't get too cheap a turntable, but you also don't need a top end one either. And one other note of caution - despite being expensive, some new LPs honestly don't sound that great because of the demand for vinyl and lots of corner cutting by the pressers. I bought a couple LPs these last couple months brand new that had significant sound/noise issues straight out of the cover. You can try cleaning even new vinyl but that may not do the trick. A
