  1. I was hoping so badly that Jack's dad would be played by Donald Sutherland.
  2. Please. What about Billy Butler's solo on Bill Doggett's "Honky Tonk"??? It laid the groundwork for so many riffs it's ridiculous. That list is beyond inane.
  3. top 25 all-time most-played... it's a very weird list, I know (excluding christmas songs, whose playlist receives heavy play 'round holiday time)... note that this is from a library that's currently at 29,741 songs: WNBF Binghamton Station Identification - 37 plays (love to throw in the odd station ID; makes the iTunes shuffle feel like an old radio station... yeah I'm an oddball but some of you know that already) Whiskey in the Jar - The Dubliners - 22 plays WABC Brass Shotgun Jingle (1976) - 14 plays I Love Music - The O'Jays - 13 plays I Got Loaded - Peppermint Harris - 11 plays Hummin'
  4. i'm all caught up after not seeing the first 4 shows when they aired (thank you mr. dvr inventor), and, once again, I'm re-introduced to the shivering, invigorating feeling of waiting for the next episode to air. Love this show.
  5. Wow! This is gonna be fun to listen to. Thanks lou!
  6. That was great! My life-long love affair with baseball has led me to the conclusion that there are few prettier sights than seeing a well-struck ball arc across the sky and travel over a fence.
  7. WOW! That sounds like a real fun couple of days.
  8. Americans are generally quite apathetic toward soccer it seems, but my next-door neighbor is from Poland, and one of my favorite things to do is watch soccer with him in his liquor store... World Cup, Euro, Champions League, Premiership... he sheds so much light on every aspect of the game, has made me a huge fan, and the free beer doesn't hurt either.
  9. I'll tell you what I want, what I really really want Welcome to America, Becks! Enjoy brunch with Tom & Katie!
  10. So do I, Lammy... to hear Nina effortlessly go from "Mississippi Goddam" to "Funkier Than a Mosquito's Tweeter" is breath-taking. Despite all the accolades, she is still immensely under-rated.
  11. I could see that accounting for Johnson's 83% in 1936, but Cy Young's 76.12% got him in in 1937 with only Napoleon Lajoie (83.58%) and Tris Speaker (82.09%) ahead of him. Both are certainly fully deserving, but I can't imagine writers thinking less of Young than they did of Lajoie or Speaker. What's also interesting is that there are more than a few HOFers who have gained induction thanks to the Veterans Committee who barely receive BBWAA support! Example: Eppa Rixey never garnered more than 13.99% of the vote between 1939 and 1958, suddenly jumps to 52% in 1960, then back to 30% in '61... a
  12. Louie put it perfectly; her voice and phrasing breaks and melts your heart at the same time. Enjoy!
  13. thought this was fascinating... DiMaggio: 88.84% (less than Rod Carew) Koufax: 86.87% (less than Carl Hubbell) Bob Gibson: 84.04% (!!!!!!!) (less than Ted Lyons... who would you rather have in your rotation?) Walter Johnson: 83.63% (what the FUCK... less than Hoyt Wilhelm) Rogers Hornsby: 78.11% (made it by the skin of his teeth?!?!) Cy Young... CY YOUNG: 76.12% (less than Early Wynn) Them writers sure used to have stringent voting standards back in the day... even in the 70s! (Gibson)
  14. Belle was not a friend of the media, and that, I think, kept him from the 5% needed to stay on. Ripken could play for my team any day. He's deserving, for sure. I'm thrilled that he and Gwynn, two career-long one-team-players, are going in together. Can't wait to hear their speeches. Gossage will get in next year. The ballot will be very light, and no player that has ever gotten 70+% of the vote hasn't gotten in. He got, what, 72% this year? We'll see that moustache on the podium in July of '08. Let's have some fun... let's talk about who you'd take OUT of the Hall of Fame given the chan
  15. I know I'm not LouieB, but this is a great starting point for Lady Day: Great sounding 2-disc set that spans her career. "Body and Soul," one of her later albums on the Verve label, is wonderful as well.
  16. "God Bless the Child," baby! Yeah she co-wrote it, but... what a song.
  17. This is a huge and largely overlooked point. Kudos, Lou... it's pretty much how popular music as we know it and the music industry began.
  18. God forbid that we'll be hearing "Oops I Did It Again" 40+ years from now. Yes, they were pure bubblegum, but there was substance to that music. It still garners a reaction. Safe to say you feel the same way about, say, the Dave Clark Five, Herman's Hermits, etc.
  19. Gorgeous work, Charles... exquisite!
  20. maybe just a little, but it looks like Auntie Dunja did the job already. You guys both share your birthday with my father. He's out of his mind, but a great guy just like both of you.
  21. Happy birthday to both of you Murphy boys! Can't believe that Brennan is 16, and that Tom isn't a teenager anymore. All the best to you both, and just one year 'til Tom!
  22. Yeah, it was pretty sweet... eighth-grader-me and 3 mighty good-looking high-school seniors in a Camaro riding up the Turnpike.
