  1. Agreed, but it is funny. At least Lettermen is doing his job!
  2. Wait , is it a lie, a flip-flop, or making a maverick decision as the situation changes? I get confused.
  3. On Saturday, I'll be at: Fleet Foxes Drive-By Truckers Man Man Robert Earl Keen Spiritualized Conor Oberst Yonder Mountain String Band Beck
  4. Heading to Austin today! Unfortunately I won't get there in time for David Byrne's show at the Paramount Theatre, but I got a nice surprise this morning and learned I have a laminate for the Festival so I'll be able to check out all my faves from stage-side! [/shameless bragging] Anyone else going?
  5. Good grief, she makes Admiral Stockdale look like a brilliant veep choice.
  6. Man, the Cubs didn't even look like they were trying tonight. I feel bad for the Mets and their fans. That is crushing. Two years in a row!?! I still hope the Mets make it!
  7. In case you missed it the first time: Steinbrenner should shut his pie hole. The playoff system we have now was put in place by ownership to maximize profit. There is no perfect system and his opinion that "it isn't fair" is his opinion -- which he entitled to -- but you can't say it is "factually correct" unless you can produce a system that IS fair to everyone. If we go back to the pre-'70 system, you could argue, perhaps, that the Angles and Ray are better than the Cubs, but the WS would be Cubs/Angels.
  8. He said it is bad system, right? That reminds me of the Churchill quote, "Many forms of Government have been tried and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed, it has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time."
  9. He's not right either though. There is no perfect system.
  10. I have an idea! Why doesn't MLB employ a system that combines the opinions of sportswriters, the League's managers, computer rankings, records and strength of schedule to determine the two best teams at the end of the regular season. Those two teams then compete in the WS. Who could possibly have a problem with that!?!
  11. There is nothing on this album I love as much as Province, I Was a Lover, Wolf Like Me or Blues From Down Here, but the overall effect and consistency of this one is much stronger than Cookie Mountain, IMO. It has climbed to third place in my best of the year list, but I still think Cloud Cult and Man Man are stronger.
  12. I admit I haven't cracked these books in about 10 years (maybe 8). They, along with the Deadbase, were invaluable when I was collecting DATs, but the Internet has really changed the game. I rarely listen to the GD anymore (at least not religiously sifting through shows) and when someone suggests a show, I can go online and listen to it easily to see if it suits my tastes. When trading DATs, I would read all about shows and do my due diligence before making a trade or joining a tree just because it was such a commitment. But I will say the write-ups -- particularly from the folks that attended
  13. Well had I known of the time limits, I would have created an account. But man, that was frustrating. I was in standing room for last year's single playoff game at Wrigley and the "seats" actually aren't all that bad. I just hope the result of the game is better than last year.
  14. Well that was the single most frustrating experience of my life. I finally get admittance from the virtual waiting room and get 100 level tickets and then it gives me one minute to fill in all of my info (address, email, billing info). Needless to say I didn't beat the clock and it told me my tickets had been released and all were sold out. I tried again anyway and was able to get to standing room because the autofill was activated by my last attempt. At least I'm in, but giving you such a short amount of time to enter your info is ridiculous.

  16. Huh, look at that! My Volume I is autographed by the authors as well, but I'm not sure who would really care about that. Maybe a collector? They are rather worn though and marked up in places. It looks like most fetching high prices are in much better condition.
  17. How much are these things fetching? I have Vols. I-III (Volume I is hardcover), but not the Addendum.
  18. Whether it was JFK or Reagan, I for one am happy to have leaders that are charismatic and inspire the populace. Presidents aren't elected to serve the people that voted for them, they are elected to serve the entire country. McCain has done a terrific job of alienating those that would support his opponent. I think those that would say the same thing about Obama are misguided. But to paint all Obama supporters as those that are just caught up in some mania and not fluent in the issues is the same narrow-mindedness that might lead some to paint all those that don't support him as racist. How ab
  19. Sweet! I won the lottery for NLDS Cubs tix!
  20. So there seems to be a few albums that are more or less universally loved by the folks on this board. Of those, I'm curious as to what people like from those albums. I feel like I tend to prefer tracks that are among the less popular on any particular album. Anyway, I thought I would start with Fleet Foxes because that album has gotten a lot of praise here. If this proves successful, I will probably do this with other albums as well. If not... well, then I won't.
  21. Mets are still a game up in the WC, right? I'd rather play them than anyone else, so I hope the Mets get the WC over the Brew.
  22. Lisa: But mom, I read that sport-utility vehicles are more likely to be in fatal accidents. Bart: Fatal to the people in the other car. Let's roll.
  23. I'm thinking of a Ronnie Wickers costume this year.
