Gotta come to defense of my Cubbies, I have been a cub fan since birth. And listen, the Cubs aren't good right now and anyone really expecting them to be is dreaming. They are trying to dig themselves out of some aging players and bad contracts (from back when they did focus on the team and had one of the highest payrolls in baseball). They have a good crop of young minor leaguers that should be good for the team for a long time. With the added revenue of the renovations and more night games (which I believe is a lot more important then you would think) it is going to do wonders for the te

While we are all fighting on who is poor and not poor and who gets what and their reasoning behind it, this surprising thing slipped under the radar. The report that has been used by Paul Ryan and the GOP "deficit hawks" to justify their austerity measures has found out to be a completely wrong. http://maddowblog.msnbc.com/_news/2013/04/16/17782034-the-excel-error-heard-round-the-world?lite So how can the "deficit hawks" justify their purposed budget and deep cuts? The facts are not on their side.

Well that is unfortunate and frankly alarming. But the key words are "get by." There are plenty of families through no fault of their own don't get by, on much, much less and need government assistance (ie social security, etc.), but they should be their own safety net, right?
-
how is the need to be educated on a topic stopped anyone from trying to make a conclusive statement on anything? apparently those who make 100k are pretty close to needing government assistance, so it seems to be a logical progression

Either it is at an all time low like DBoone says, or it is rampant like lamrod says. One would say someone is right.

BleedOrange, I believe your Rangers will be playing my Cubbies for the next couple of nights. I wonder if any of these games will change your mind.

You wound find any argument on that statement. But here is the rub, people who don't like government programs because of abuse seem to be in favor of scraping the entire program (or severely gutting) rather then deal with the abuse to make the program better. It always seems to me people are throwing the baby out with the bath water here. It is a simple thing to say there is abuse in government programs so we need to cut it, it is a harder thing to say what is the best way to fix it.

Patton Oswald summed up my thoughts pretty well on his Facebook Page.

it is a way too early to speculate on if this is terrorism or not, considering it was an hour ago. At this point all we should do is hope that everyone is ok. (though as I type this at least 2 are confirmed dead).

Whites was awesome. There really needs to be more comedies set in restaurants.

I would much rather watch a game where it is the nine men on the field vs the other nine on the field. The pitcher is not always an automatic out. The DH was put in because pitchers can't hit what is next a DH for the short stop? Hell if want to see a good threat why don't we have an 9 offensive players and 9 defensive? You would certainly have a better hitting. Baseball is not football. I just find the DH boring. I prefer the NL game.
-
I was reading about the DH and the article made a pretty good comparison to pitchers and NFL kickers. A kicker's job is to punt the ball, after the ball is punted that guy does not run off the field in place of a designated tackler. He is there he is part of the game. Baseball is supposed to be 9 guys against 9 guys, the DH takes that out. But as pointed out it is always fun to a pitcher help himself out. All the DH does is allows aging players a few more years of making millions of dollars. It takes a chess game and turns it into checkers.

I honestly thought he was already dead. Anyway, I really remember him from Mork and Mindy.

Now who is putting words in people's mouths? I never said Jules wanted to trample the poor and elderly, nor do I think he does. I also did I call him a motherfucker. I was just saying the statement is cold, mean and callous, that is all. Did Jules mean it as a joke, probably (but it is you that said it was a joke, not him.) But it simply is not funny, nor clever. I could not tell if he was joking or not. See when Colbert make jokes they do it better. If Colbert said I think North Korea should bomb the shit out the US and left it at that, it would not be funny, even if he said it was

As joke it was not particular funny. And goes back to how "cold" a statement like that really is. Social Security is a serious topic people depend on it. By saying this is a joke does not make it any less callous or cold. In fact it may make it more so. I am not demonizing him, I am pointing out that saying that cutting all funding to social security is a pretty shitty thing to say, even if you are joking. That is what I have a problem with. Words have meaning, you can't back away form controversial statements by claiming that you were only kidding.

1) Not in a million years. The AL should abandon the DH. Having a pitcher hit adds a bit more complexity to the game. Double switches, bunts etc. 2) Yes I agree 3) hmm... not so much, I like to see a good collision, plus these are grown men playing a game bad shit happens in a game it is the way it is. 4) Absolutely. 5) that is just silly. Moving guys over to get into scoring position it is part of the game. Also to do it right and well is hard. What is next you gonna ban sac flys too?

Yep screwing the poor, retired and disabled a laugh a minute!

Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight! http://sports.yahoo.com/news/greinke-breaks-collarbone-brawl-padres-060344183--mlb.html Greinke breaks his collar bone. I think Quentin comes off like an ass in this one. I agree with Mattingly and Carlos should be suspended as long as Greinke is out.

But you also said that Social Security should be cut by 100% and then in response to that you said be your own safety net. I guess I inferred from those statements that you desired to have SS drastically cut and for those that will not get SS (or significantly less) that they are on their own. I guess I misunderstood. True, I took your statement and extrapolated a lot more into it. I really did not mean to put words in your mouth and I do apologize. For all of those of you who are planning for retirement good for you. But there are situations out there where people don't have jo

The average social security recipient receives about 12K a year, I don't think anyone is living off of that. You know not everyone in the country is as well off as you, of course people should be self reliant and do for themselves. But those that can't will need social security. Take for example Mr. Heartbreak's story, from his story he didn't doing anything wrong, but his 401K was wiped out (as well as many others) in the economic down turn. Also with a lot corporations decreasing their contributions to 401K's and eliminating pensions and with another economic collapse that so many are

I never thought of the NRA as a non-profit, nor do I really think they are truly an advocate for gun rights. IMHO they advocate for gun producers and gun sellers. Though PBO and the Dems have done more to help gun sales then any NRA campaign in recent memory. I think he must have being thinking about when Jules said "Be your own safety net" back on page 22. Which is pretty cold.
-
Jules idiotic statement notwithstanding, I can't believe PBO has brought this as an option when the people on the other side of this debate flatly refuse to close tax loopholes that allow corporations to hide profits overseas. So I guess it is on the backs of the poor and middle class that solve the deficit "problem."
-
For as outwardly dumb as the GOP seems they sure are shrewd in ginning up this deficit "problem" in order to get a Democrat proposing entitlement cuts in a down economy.

Yeah this episode wasn't the best, but it wasn't completely awful. It was in a long line of "sophomore" companion episodes and held that format pretty true where the Doctor takes his companion to the future/past and she shows how special she is (Rose's End of the World, Martha's The Shakespeare Code, Donna's The Fires of Pompeii, Amy's Beast Below). Now these episodes are never great, it is just a way to show off the new companion. And in comparison Rings is not any better or worse than these episodes. Though from the mind of Neil Cross (creator of Luther) I was expecting a lot more. I ha

You know I told myself that I didn't want to get into this pointless gun argument again. Cause really it is pointless. The pro-gun group is so entrenched in its ways that any sensible or even minor sensible measures aren't even considered. And the NRA is such a powerful lobby that no legislation will be passed, in fact they actively weaken the gun laws that are already on the books. And then the go to argument on what people would do about gun control is mental health, which is complete bullshit. It is, find me some real measures that have been purposed to help the mentally ill. Or th
