according to Citysearch; Acoustics, which were dreadful when the place opened, have been improved dramatically, to the point where Palumbo is now a pretty decent place to see a show. Performance magazine, a concert trade publication, agrees, consistently naming the A.J. Palumbo Center one of the top 10 grossing arenas of its size since its opening in 1988. I got a ticket in sec.3, row BB so I guess we'll find out soon.

Here's another great one. Btw, TvZ is one of the few artists Dylan has covered. He's done Pancho and Lefty many times, the performance of it at Bonnaroo '04 was pretty amazing.

~~~~~~~SOLD~~~~~~~~ Well looks like I can't make it for Louisville.... hopefully I can get down to Pittsburgh in Oct. Field Reserved -- Section 1, Row E, Seat 1. This is about as good as it gets. It's 53.80 including all the TM crap, I'll cover the airmail and paypal.
Yeah who knows. Dylan isn't always the most modest guy, I remember reading the incredible detail and thinking, he's grandstanding a bit; as in, "I've got a mind like a steel trap, ha." (which, of course he DOES) Nevertheless I was completely mesmerized reading Chronicles I. Couldn't put it down.
Townes was a monster songwriter, check him out. He was also a walking train wreck. I'd suggest Rear View Mirror or In The Beginning as good ones to start. Also the DVD that came out last year is pretty fine. For a slight Wilco connection -- TvZ apparently "discovered" rock at age 50, by which point his place as a legendary figure was forever secure. He was recording an album with Sonic Youth when he died on New Years Day 1997. Way before his time but thank God we had him for a long time and many many excellent records. Although I didn't become a fan until a few years ago, I "miss" To
Mermaid Avenue should be easy to find, no idea about the singles. Gemm is a good source for rarities if you want to avoid epay.
I think it was a reaction to realizing he'd married Cynthia.
I was thinking of all the time and effort the band put into the WG songs. If anyone 'should ' be there performing, it's Wilco and Bragg. It's not like they're owed anything, but it would've been the right thing. (frinstance the Mermaid Ave work was profiled in a major way in the travelling Woody exhibit that toured the US in 2000..I saw it in DC). I guess it just wasn't possible this time. I'll get over it.
Wishful Thinking, Hell is Chrome, Company in my Back
Agreed. I didn't really have anything to say, just wanted to see what my rank becomes with my 500th post. Candyfloss...meh. Probably my least favorite Wilco song. -
Yeah, maybe he thought Wilco is Billy Bragg's band. Kind of like Bob Dylan and The Band, who played at the 1967 tribute concert. I posted a pissy comment last night but I guess a mod didn't like my language. I think it's pretty shameful to have this tribute without Wilco there. But it's for a good cause, so I guess we can't complain.
Oh..........I hope so. I've been feeling pretty constipated lately.
my Liz is saucier than your Liz!!
It'll be there with the audio equipment mags (Sound & Vision, etc.).
I'd like to hear that boogie jam too! But I'd really like to hear Nels' treatment on some others, like I Thought I Held You. Not in this lifetime I guess.
Ok, deep breath...so I realize it's for a good cause and all, but how the fuck can they put on a Woody tribute with Bragg there and a bunch of other notables, and no Wilco??? That's RIDICULOUS. What, is Bright Eyes gonna sing California Stars? I think not. Maybe they can get Wilco on stage early like 5pm and get them on a plane to Detroit a.s.a.p. after that? Obviously the band's first commitment has to be to the fans at the Detroit show. Seriously, this is fucked up. Someone's ass is gonna be fired.
If it were me I'd just give them Kicking Television. But I don't have the patience I used to when it comes to making mix tapes for people. Everyone's just too busy to appreciate what goes into that process. I pretty much agree with entropy, you have a good cross section of the essentials, not all of them obviously but enough for an intro. Personally I'd nix Poor Places in favor of Ashes Of American Flags, but no big deal either way. I would not include IATTBYH, I'd save that treat for the people who bite the bullet.....I can't recall many Holy Fuck moments greater than the first time I p
Yep...checked wilcobase, they haven't played That's Not The Issue in 10 years, and I Thought I Held You has only been played ONCE...in 1995. (that song has such an achingly beautiful lap steel) Realistically, if they're gonna play something off A.M. and I'm lucky enough to be at the show, I hope it's Should've Been In Love.
-
lol..our Elizabeth just turned 10, but she's ahead of the curve. Been making me feel dumb for as long as I can remember. Which I generally deserve. But lately she's got "Major Attitude".
-
One thing I haven't figured out, what's the big deal with Too Far Apart? Members here seem to be going nuts over the band playing it lately, is it just the rarety? It's on okay song, but not really one of the stronger cuts from A.M., IMHO.
yeah, the SBS debate.....in a way it brings to my mind some of Van Morrison's first records as a solo artist. Astral Weeks was his debut and an unquestionable masterpiece, long sprawling songs and a style that was very different from anything we'd heard anywhere else before. Pretty close to revolutionary. I guess one way to look at it is; if Summerteeth and YHF were Wilco's Astral Weeks...then AGIB and (especially) SBS are their Tupelo Honey and Moondance. Very fine records, though the songs are trimmed down and perhaps the production is just a bit too "done". Still, the songs are some of
So what's the deal, are the guys really audiophiles? I know Jeff's a big vinyl hound and he said recently he thinks the LP is the only good-sounding copy of Wilco's studio albums. I kind of opted out of the scene a few years ago, well, into DIY for the satisfaction as well as financial considerations (second family). I still read Art Dudley once in a while, but he's really in a league of one as audio scribes go. Btw, $phile gave SBS a very complimentary (and I think accurate) review when it came out. http://www.stereophile.com/recordingofthemonth/607rotm/
A.M. and Being There are outstanding as well. I really don't think Wilco is capable of making an average record. As for Summerteeth, from what I can see a lot of the 'wayback' fans count it as their favorite. Personally I came in pretty late as well, so not as much baggage and I guess I can be more objective about the catalog. Honestly tho, I'd have a hard time ranking the Wilco albums against each other. They're all THAT good, and that includes A.M. (and SBS!!).
Lol...my bad on that one then. (I was only kidding of course)
indeed... Just climb aboard The tracks of a train's arm In my fragile family tree picking apples for the kings and queens of things I've never seen You learn so slow, old radiant beauty I'll curve my flight You're like a moon that's full Across a sea of foam I'm the sky you've been burning
