  1. Hey, this is great news...congrats Ellen (and Jim)! Well done. I also didn't know the nodepression site was still up and running, I will definitely check this out.
  2. I didn't read the whole thing either. I noticed that the analysis only looked at popular albums from groups that were formed between 1970 and 1979 (American groups only I think). So... Doobie Bros, Steely Dan, America, Bread, Talking Heads, Eagles, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Aerosmith, CSN/Y, and what not. I wonder if Big Star made the radar. Or Little Feat. Or The Ramones. The factors would be a lot more interesting with some actual data!
  3. Since you went ahead and bought them.....I'm sure they'll be a big improvement, so enjoy them and feel free to ignore the following. Most of the large, high-end headphones are designed to be driven by a separate outboard amplifier. There are many hundreds of great amps out there, and some of them are portable (kinda), but for the hardcore headphiles the amp is as important as the headphone- and the synergy between the two is paramount. The reason a small mp3 player isn't great for most of these headphones is that it only puts out a few milliwatts of power (for battery life), so your earb
  4. Interesting article here if you happen to care about such things. Bummer they don't publish the actual list of bands or records, so it makes it hard to understand if the trends or reasons attributed make sense. http://www.jec.cultu...f/ceulemans.pdf
  5. I sort of agree with that, but... In Rainbows is just beautiful, and most of it is quite melodic. It's the most accessible thing they've done in a long time, and overall their best record in many ways. (to me) On In Rainbows Thom takes misery to a level of beauty I've rarely heard on disc.
  6. Head-Fi is a great site if you obsess about this stuff. I miss my Japanese woodie AT's. Great sound under $400 (used) and could easily be driven off an iPod output if you wanted them mobile. Sweet midrange, not excessive bass. (kinda big tho)
  7. Didn't she do that Rock Around The Xmas Tree song?? Ugh. Mass suicide. Not forgiveable.
  8. Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. Also really like Tina Weymouth, and Tal Wilkenfeld.
  9. Can't believe I forgot Rickie. Would've expected more love for Laurie, Lu and Tracy. Also very deserving.... Lauren Hill, Maya (MIA), Sade, Dido, Martha Wainwright, Sophie B. Hawkins, Cindi Lauper, Madonna, Tina Turner, Loreena McKennitt, Diana Krall, Laura Nyro, Joan Baez. Many others I enjoy but they have been and will be mentioned a lot.
  10. Assuming you want female pop-rock-folk band leaders, or singer-songwriters. Offhand some of my faves...... Joni Mitchell Kate Bush Laurie Anderson Chrissie Hynde Sinead O'Connor (ret.) Tracy Chapman Lucinda Williams Leslie Feist Cat Power Neko Case Gwen Stefani guess that makes 11...
  11. A three-guitar blitz on Powderfinger wouldn't be a bad thing at all. They could also do something countryish like Out On The Weekend or Goin' Back. My vote would be to hear an epic like Words, or Cowgirl...
  12. :thumbup Add BOOZE, Subtract Young Children = CHRISTMAS FUN Ol' Lucky still has a wicked sense of humor.... but this is still my fave http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VsahLRdQEo8
  13. p.s. if the baby is a boy, would you name him 'Wilco'?
  14. Oh man. Sorry but I don't think they "owe" us shit. In fact their record company never paid them what they were due. (right??) I don't think this'll ever happen. At most Wilco might someday bring Jay onstage and do a couple of numbers. That would be a treat, I guess. But really, who cares.
  15. Very cool. Gotta bet they'll play Monday there. This is also great news for Oz fans, no doubt they will make some stops while on that side of the planet. What's next? Israel?
  16. Duh, I thought so. I double checked before I posted that and still didn't see it. It's been a long week....... (but I still get the kickback for converting Cortez...haha)
  17. I have a hard time with plenty of their stuff too. But what they do well, they do really, really well. They're so tight on Okonokos...a lot of the jam-boogie stuff on that double disc ranks right up there with Waiting For Columbus, for me.
  18. I exaggerate. But if you're a Neil fan, you at least oughta hear and acknowledge the live Okonokos version of Dondante, one of the best things anyone's done this decade IMO.
  19. "It's not so much about courtesy, it's the currency we need your help with." "Jesus, look at the fucking dust on this floor." "Michelle wasn't kidding, you really do suck at thumb wrestling."
  20. Been too busy to check back in.....lot of great picks here. Neil Young was an oversight on my part. I find it strange none of us has mentioned MMJ yet(!). We all dig 'em.
  21. Awesome. Really starting to regret that I missed these guys here last month. But I blew my so-called concert budget on Wilco and then David Gray (both also at Massey Hall), so I can't really complain.
  22. Offhand you might be missing the Most Prolific Artist of the decade(?).
