  1. The second solo in "Marquee Moon" Jeezus, how was that not yet mentioned?!?! It all starts kinda tenatively, with Verlaine sort of scratching at the open D string. And then, another couple of notes are added. The phrases get longer and are attacked with increasing vigor until it becomes ferocious. Then it all just EXPLODES! Then, it gets all quiet, as the guitar just tinkles clusters of notes that sound like chirping birds: the calm after the storm. Amazing. One must note though that credit should be given to the entire band for that outstanding buildup. The rhythm section really propels

  4. I really like Blue Lights on the Runway, but know nothing about this one. The year-end talk going on now got me thinking that, had I heard the above-mentioned album when it actually came out in '09 it would've made my "best-of" list for that year. So, anyone hear it/have this new one? I did a search and found no chatter here.
  5. Does Peter Laughner fit, or was he never known enough? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWP8tkZ4ldE&feature=related
  6. This cover made me listen to the original in a whole new way. Brought out a pathos that I never knew was there. Brilliant.
  7. Despite this, you can't fuck with Buzz Lightyear.
  8. This past weekend I attended a 50th birthday party for my grammar school, AT my grammar school. Haven't been in that building in nearly 30 years. I saw old classmates that I haven't seen since then. I saw old teachers... Talk about nostalgia!
  9. Forgot that I put this thread here. Just added to it; my purchases since July.
  10. No Robert Johnson either. MASSIVE oversight, by any standards.
  11. Listening to it now and I'm digging it. It reminds me a bit of this album: Pigeonhed - The Full Sentence You familiar with it?
  12. Leave it to Brehmer to impart this little bit of info: The song is about one of the sisters getting way into transcendetntalism, and wanting to go down to Hammond, LA to study with some guru. So, the other 2 are singing to Maggie, I think about not going down to Hammond. Puts new light on the song.
  13. I would put some, but I got none. I know: for shame.

  15. I NEVER hear them on the radio! But this morning, on WXRT in Chicago -- as part of a contest called "Instant Flashback", where you have to be the first to call in and guess the year of a song's release -- the DJ played "The Hammond Song". Being as that I just won this contest a couple of weeks ago, I was not able to call in and guess 1979 (which was correct). But, damn hearing that song on the radio today made my commute! I really wish that the radio played more of those guys. And more Harry Nilsson. And ANY Big Star. And more Son Volt. (They already play a LOT of Wilco.) *sigh*
  16. Dave Matthews too. Especially Dave.
  17. Also had the best albums from Guided by Voices, Auteurs, Luna...
  18. Link to new single here: http://www.matadorrecords.com/matablog/2011/10/25/guided-by-voices-new-single-by-original-lineup-the-unsinkable-fats-domino/ Dig it!
  19. Used to play this song when I DJed in college. It was one of those that I would CRANK and jump around the booth. And then miss starting the next song when it was done. Oops. Still sounds pretty good. Fun stuff. (Actual song starts at about 1:00) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6kNlGf9M4M
  20. Listening to this one now, and posting about it this morning reminded me that I found it for $1 at the Tower Records import bargain bin back in 1995 or so. Nice find now that it's out of print and selling for as much as $125! Plus, it's just a great collection.
