It's not even the best GBV record ever. That would be Alien Lanes. -

I think I told this one elsewhere, but there was a local band down in Columbia, MO -- or at least they played there enough for me to consider them local. I had no real desire to see them, but one Halloween (1989), they opened for fIREHOSE, so I figured that I'd go to the show and check out the local yokels. It was Uncle Tupelo. They blew me out the freaking door. Sorry for repeating that story. I wasn't planning on doing so, but it does fit here, so what the hell?

Top 3 most underwhelming bands/artists you've ever seen
PopTodd replied to Mrs. Peel's topic in Someone Else's Song
Okay, here is a blasphemous post: I've only seen Wilco once, and was underwhelmed. TA-DA!!! Of course, it was maybe their second-ever show and consisted of a lot of material from A.M., which is my least-favorite Wilco record. Jeff played the first half of the show solo/acoustic and it was good. But I was really waiting to hear the new material during that part of the show. And, when he finally got around to introducing the new band and playing the new stuff..... it was okay. -
You know... those shows you were dragged to by someone, or went to on a lark? But then the band wound up blowing you away? Or at least they far surpassed expectations? Me: Primal Scream: I was always kinda lukewarm on them. And, when they showed up 1.5 hours late for a midnight show, I was prepared to just freaking hate them (as was the entire crowd at Metro that night). But then, they started playing. By 30 seconds into the first song, every damn person in the club -- including bouncers, sound engineers, and bartenders -- were rocking our ASSES off!!! Amazing show! Oh, and another one: T

I was just about to. But, also: Rev. Gary Davis I have this amazing collection: And, if you want some gritty Chicago-style blues: Magic Sam This is his masterpiece: The version of "Sweet Home Chicago" that is on here is the one that everybody since has been aping. Pretty much the definitive version.

Cornershop just stood in one place and looked bored. It's a shame for a band whose music is so danceable. -
The Birmingham Sound: The Soul Of Neil Hemphill
PopTodd replied to PopTodd's topic in Someone Else's Song
That's where I picked it up -- where I picked up both volumes. And, I gotta look out for those showcases. -
Just picked up Vol. 2 yesterday. (I've had Vol. 1 for a while now.) Both are damn, damn good! Here's the AllMusic (4.5-star) review for Vol. 1: I'll send a song or two sampler if you're interested. But, this is a labor of love thing that a local (Chicago) guy pretty much funded out of his own pocket. So I'm loathe to send any more than one or two songs. Anyway, just wanted to bring it to your attention. It's Deep, deep soul well worth checking out by any serious soul/R&B fans. (Both vols.)

I remember kinda liking these guys back in H.S., but not much more. Except their bass player was huge: Is it worth picking up a cheap best of? Or, Champagne Jam is available for $1 at Amazon. That's the one that I remember. Is it really any good? No?

#1 (IMO): Joe Pisapia - Daydreams (I think that I might have mentioned that album somewhere else before. )

Electro-Shock Blues is where I started. And, although I adore that album, I have yet to delve any deeper. Still, that is a brilliant record.
