Blur is the poor mans bastard son of a three way between the Kinks, Madness, and XTC.

Peru: movies, literature, art, music, etc.
Winston Legthigh replied to Queen Amaranthine's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
For music, check out Los Saicos - they had a somewhat publicized revival a few years back. I think there's a small thread on this site about them, IIRC. And David Byrne put out a nice Afro-Peruvian sampler album. Peruvian music is not all pan flutes. My mom is from Peru, but my knowledge of the culture is mostly limited to the cuisine. -
wilco solid sound request thread first night

Where is the voting? I just submitted my request. Jailbreak. I'll take either AC/DC's or Thin Lizzy's. Or a mashup of the two. -
Faulty question. It takes two to tango.

You'd think that a private sale would have to be documented and registered, like a car sale. Not that difficult.
-
Other than getting rid of guns entirely (no, I don't have a plan for it), there's really no way to prevent gun violence. No laws about registration will make guns safer, if we're not going to do anything about the vast quantities of firearms that already exist. And that's not going to happen. If there's a shitload of guns (there is), the criminal element will get their hands on them, regardless of legislation.

This is a bad assumption. You can't assume that every single failed background check is because a felon is lying on his application form. There could be errors made by the applicant, there could be errors made by the person transmitting the information to the FBI. There could be errors from false positives (similar names, similar birthdates, etc.). I don't know what percentage of failed applications are true positives, and I don't have a link. What is your solution to preventing a single criminal from purchasing a gun at a gun show? Is it even realistic to expect that?
-
Hixter, can I ask you to clarify what you think is a farce about the failed test vs prosecutions total? I originally thought it was because of the lack of law enforcement follow-up. Seems we would want close to 100% prosecution for failed tests. But if the failed tests are mostly false positives - is that what you're saying is the farce? Or is it a farce because a criminal certainly isn't going to fill out a form to purchase a gun...

This guy says that failing the application is most often because of a mistake, and can be appealed. Perhaps that's why the prosecution rate is so low? http://gunguy.tempdomainname.com/nicsfail.htm

There are many reasons to sign up with Uncle Sam. My father joined the Army because he flunked out of college and didn't have many prospects other than digging ditches for the Detroit Gas Co. (and figured he would get drafted anyway). I would assume the spectrum of reasons to join would range from "Gung Ho" to "Meh - there's nothing else going on in my life." Who cares? If you served, that's an awesome badge that nobody can take away.

"Kinda pointless" is pretty much every thread on this board, no?

Yes. -
If a family man making $100k isn't able to stash away some of that into savings (whether short-term, long-term, for emergency funds, or whatever), then he's doing something wrong. Will he be able to join the country club? Maybe not. But life should be pretty comfortable for that family. Are they upper-class? no. What's the definition of wealthy, anyway?

Does she really need to see him in concert? Can't she just take those old records off the shelf? -

This is an old post, but new to me. Hilarious stuff (not for the easily offended) Mickey Mantle's outstanding Yankee Stadium Experience. -

I don't like Kid Rock but good on him

I think creative types are called to their profession. Regardless, for every example of a working man's musician (meaning, not rich, but able to make a living) I could come up with, you could come up with one who is only in it for the money. I all-capped PAID, because I was thinking of Old Dirty Bastard lyrics a friend of mine always repeats. "Who the fuck wanna be an MC, if you can't get PAID to be an MC?" -

Well, there's always going to be a chance to make money. Will Alabama Shakes ever get paid like Jay-Z? Doubtful. Do all musicians join a band to get PAID? doubtful. -

Being "stuck with whoever is capable of doing it without making money"? So does that include all the awesome acts I can see at Schubas or The Hideout or Lincoln Hall, or countless other places I have seen great live music, always for less than $20?
