Is it just me, or does this section: Motown-inspired rave-up "All Night," the sing-a-long "Marker in the Sand" and "Down," which showcased lead guitarist Mike McCready's blues-drenched leads. make no sense at all? They played "Undone" for only the third time too; that's pretty cool.

Elf Power are the business.

Something like this. As much as I love Pearl Jam, I found myself really anticipating the MMJ sets at those 2006 shows. I'm still kicking myself for missing them at the Hideout, Schubas, etc.
-
I don't think either of the reviews are terribly off base (I like the record, but it's not my favorite, I'll admit), but I'm truly curious to read their reviews of the Chicago Theatre shows in October.

Shut. up. Oh, I'm so jell. That would have been awesome! I know I've heard PJ cover Begin the Begin before, but can't remember where...
-
Really? Whoa.
-
Oh...heh! Well, FWIW, I'd agree with you then. I kind of wish they'd start opening with "All Night"...
-
Maybe so, but for a Roo setlist (where the set times are longer and artists can theoretically go hog-wild...witness MMJ) I expected a little more. What can I say, I'm a greedy SOB That said, I just got an mp3 of "All Night" and it sounds all right.
-
Thanks. And I'll agree, I love that they constantly mix up their setlists and keep things fresh. The setlist isn't always a great indicator of the "feel" of the show, anyway - I'm sure it was a good time. Just looks a little short of epic.

This post from the original poster's link cracked me up: Freedom is just another word for doing what Wayne Coyne tells you.
-
It's on Ticketmaster.

What's the song that's only been played 3 times since '98? I love the rarities as much as anyone, but the overall setlist just doesn't do much for me. I'm surprised they stretched 25 songs out for 3 hours; I was expecting 30+.
-
Kind of a meh PJ setlist, IMO.
-
If I don't get to hear them play "Tyrone" at some point this summer, I will truly be disappointed. How many of y'all are up for the Nashville show the night before Louisville?
-
Yeah, Shonna sounded...painful. And I like the Fiery Furnaces and all, but it was such a drag to cut that Truckers set short.
-
A friend who attended that show with me had the same reaction - he said he had no idea that so many MMJ songs had such reflective lyrics and spiritual overtones. Maybe it's just the fact that it was in a church, but several of the songs took on a hymnlike feel - "Wonderful" and "Look At You" especially.

Yo La Tengo - Tears Are In Your Eyes

Oh man. "Finest Worksong" "Little America" and "Driver 8"? You're so lucky!
-
I do, but just as an acquaintance. I finally got the Two Cow Garage documentary and plan on watching it this weekend. I'm glad someone is documenting all the great little shows that come through Chicago!
-
Ha! Will do. I talked to John a bit on Sunday and your name came up - I'm sure he'll introduce us at some point. Has anyone had a chance to listen to Dual Hawks yet? What do you think of it?
-
Man, like ships passing in the night, Louie! I thoroughly enjoyed Saturday's show, and Sunday's was even better IMO. There was a lovely reading of "Ordinary Days" that nearly brought me to tears. I'd never seen them before and they were so, so good.
-
Yes, it was! I was so excited to hear that. I love their version of that tune. I was reading an interview in Spin (I think), and Jim James said that a lot of these songs were written when he was starting a new relationship and was all happy in love. Apparently the relationship has since ended, and he said the songs sound kind of desperate and sad to him now.
-
Reckoning or Murmur. Of the later stuff, I actually really like Out of Time and Automatic for the People, too.
-
Ooh, if we're using Isbell songs, I have to add "Goddamn Lonely Love". Gaaaaaaaah.
