The latest Ryan Adams thread
tangara replied to Duck-Billed Catechist's topic in Someone Else's Song
I'll agree with this. I love Ryan Adams, but I stopped listening to Cardinology about a week in and haven't picked it up since. It didn't make my top 10 this year, not even the honorable mentions. -
Couldn't agree with you more, nodep. I saw Fleet Foxes seven (eek) times this year, and that was my favorite performance. It's the first time I saw them in front of a REALLY big crowd and they seemed so overwhelmed, bemused and excited that the hometown crowd was responding so enthusiastically. You can play "name that influence" with the Fleet Foxes record all day long, but that doesn't take away from the fact that it's beautifully produced, spare and haunting, and bottom line, doesn't sound like anything else that came out this year.

Maybe I'm reading too much into that cover artwork, but it strikes me as another sign of Jason trying to distance himself from an alt-country sound. That cover is absolutely gorgeous, but it just doesn't look "twangy" to me, if that makes any sense. Compare it to Sirens of the Ditch...

I don't get the MMJ comparison...huh. The EP was miles better than the LP, in my opinion.

"Perfect Day" by Lou Reed.

That's a nice list. Good to see Horse Feathers up there.

Ah. Well, if you're a Jason devotee, then you're obviously not going to enjoy the show as much without his contributions. Personally, I prefer my DBT with Isbell on the side. Brighterisn't my favorite DBT record either (they REALLY could have edited), but I think there are a lot of really solid tunes on it. Three Dimes Down has become a live favorite over the past year, along with The Opening Act.

Oh my god, I'm going to be on youtube all day. Thanks!!

What about Neff? He's been shredding it up quite a bit lately, and not just on the pedal steel. He had some scorching solos the last few times I saw them. I dunno, I've seen them about ten times this year (wish I were kidding) and I don't think the quality's fallen off one bit. Some shows are better than others, of course, but it's always a solid product.

This is fantastic news. Thanks for posting! -
Tuesday the 9th you could see the Rev. Horton Heat at the Metro in Chicago for only $2, and it benefits Rock for Kids.

Thanks, Preferred! I'm excited for this Wonder when they're going to announce the ASSSCAT monologist(s)?

I love Jason, but I'm not really digging the song streaming on his myspace. I'll check out that other link and see if the other snippets grab me. *edit* The snippets are, indeed, grabbing me. Much more so than the full song on the myspace. I think it's gonna be a good record!

I meant to go last year but something came up. The tickets are only available at the door, right? How early d'you think I'd have to get there to get in? Does it sell out? So many questions...
-
I've been listening to both the EP and the LP quite a bit lately as I compile my year-end best-of lists, and I think the EP is just a smidge better. They're both solid, of course. But the EP is perfection.

This might seem like a silly question, but you can come and go from this thing, right?

The Jayhawks (including Louris, Olson, and related)

Has it leaked? -
Excellent call on the Dr. Dog comparison.

Schubas is only around 250 or so, but it was sold out as well, and I'm told the Ryman is sold out too (though I have a feeling that's more to do with Iron & Wine).
-
Fantastic news about the upcoming tour. I can't wait to see them again. I was starting to get irrational thoughts about flying down to Nashville to see them at the Ryman this weekend. Wonder if they'll be able to fill some bigger places this time around.

I am absolutely in love with this band. Furr has clawed its way up among my top tier records of the year, and they are absolutely incredible live. Anyone catch them at Schubas last Sunday? Seriously one of my favorite shows this year, perhaps tied with the Blitzen Trapper/Fleet Foxes show at Schubas last spring. I didn't like the song choice last night on Conan; I would've gone with "God & Suicide" or "Gold for Bread". They looked a little nervous, too. And Erik Menteer is a fantastic guitarist, but he didn't look like he had much to do on "Furr" last night. Ah well. I think th

Ha! They couldn't even be arsed to spell his name right back then I remember this. It was very cool.
