10 worst guitarists of all time!
Shakespeare In The Alley replied to froggie's topic in Someone Else's Song
Grohl is a good guitarist, and a great songwriter for what the Foo Fighters are. But nothing will ever touch his drumming, which is among the best I've ever heard (and had the fortune of seeing in person). I saw him do Everlong solo at the 9:30 Club this past Monday, then he played guitar on a few Bad Brains covers with three of the guys from Scream. I'd never seen him play guitar in that type of sound, and he rocked. -
Great LPs with crappy openers

I love the album. It's fantastic. And the intro isn't crappy or anything. I just wish it was shorter. -

Not really a song, but I wish Grandaddy's Just Like The Fambly Cat didn't have the opening "what happened to the family cat?" audio bit. Great album, and I do like how the end segues into Jeez Louise so perfectly, but still. I'd like it a lot more cut in half, or ditched entirely. -

Best/Favorite Opening Tracks

Only sometimes. I suppose if it's gotta be there, I'd prefer it as the opener. That way, it doesn't immediately follow any of the albums classic songs, and it's pretty much forgotten by the time Sad Eyed Lady comes around. But I must clarify; I do not hate, or even dislike Rainy Day Women. It's just a tad out of place. I do still consider Blonde on Blonde the best rock album around. And flawless does still apply. Which is just a testament to how great everything else is on the album. -

Blonde on Blonde is the best album I've ever heard. But Rainy Day Women is not a good opener. I don't dislike the song, but I do sometimes wish it wasn't on the album. -
This is so very true. "CDs" won't sound as good when they're ripped into iTunes. But the discs themselves have pretty great quality sound.

Try a real CD player. iTunes won't work, I believe.

The Out Spaced hidden track is just a techno instrumental. Pretty sweet groove, but not much more. Certainly not as great a discovery as Citizen's Band. Still worth hearing, though.

The Roots & Monsters of Folk
Shakespeare In The Alley replied to okp greg's topic in Someone Else's Song
The original was great, I thought. And I'm a passionate Oberst hater. But this version is better. The Roots are such a good band. How I Got Over is probably my most anticipated album right now. -
The Black Keys new album - "Brothers"
Shakespeare In The Alley replied to sky blue bats's topic in Someone Else's Song
No it isn't, though. I like all these songs, and I don't think there's a "bad" one on the album. But I think a little bit more editing would have made this an even more stunning album. I think an album can have no bad songs but still feel too long. And length is a perfectly reasonable criticism of an album. I'd rate this much higher than a 7.7, but my criticism would be the same as the Pitchfork review's. -
Super Furry Animals put what might be their very best song as a hidden track you have to rewind from track one to get to on Guerilla.

The Black Keys new album - "Brothers"

I think the record is great, but I think that review was entirely fair. Cut a few songs off and release them as b-sides and you could have an absolutely stunning 43/45 minute album. As is, it's still stunning. But my only possible complaint is the running time. -

Shit, now I'm excited to get my copy. I have no idea what this could be. -
I say this frequently, but this is the best rock band out there. Oh, and PopTodd, I finally acquired a copy of this: I'm not a huge fan of female singers, but I'm liking this so far.

Great album.

Royal Tenanbaums Fantastic Mr. Fox Rushmore Darjeling Bottle Rocket Life Aquatic Tenenbaums is my favorite movie, period. Every character is so great, and it's such a well written movie. I love them all, but Life Aquatic drags for a bit too much. And Bottle Rocket is too simple to compete with the others. I think in some ways, Darjeeling is his most interesting movie. Not only is it a gorgeously composed film, but it really reveals itself after three or four views. Underrated. I'm excited for his next movie. Mr. Fox blew me away.

Just got 4th row tickets to see them in DC this summer. Brothers is still kicking my ass, so I'm psyched to see them. -
Most enjoyable albums?
Shakespeare In The Alley replied to tommyjacobs's topic in Someone Else's Song
Super Furry Animals make the most enjoyable music I've ever heard. Also the best. I don't think it's a coincidence. -
The Flaming Lips - Dark Side of the Moon
Shakespeare In The Alley replied to okp greg's topic in Someone Else's Song
Yup. A few times. Pretty neat. I do think the Wilco fiasco helped people/bands like the Flaming Lips. But I think in this case, they've always had a very good relationship with WB, and WB has always let Wayne do some weird shit. -

Wayne already had that. Zaireeka came out in 1997. So he wasn't really lacking recording freedom before the Wilco/Reprise fiasco.
