  1. All I remember from the 90s is bangs... my huge, unfortunate bangs. Do I need to cut my hair for this?!? In case anyone's wondering, I'm thinking: no. Although I may see what I can do with hot rollers and a jumbo-sized can of AquaNet.
  2. This hopped up to the top of the to-read list this week, bypassing some that have been on there for ages: Michelle Tea hosts a cool reading series at the public library, and gives out cookies.
  3. I've read A Heartbreaking Work... and You Shall Know... and I really WANT to like Dave Eggers, but I just don't. I think he's done great things with the tutoring programs he's running across the country, he seems like a very cool guy the few times I've seen him in person, but his books sound to me like they were written by a complete asshole, and I really can't get past that. And yet the subject matter of this new one wouldn't seem to lend itself to that, so I may go ahead and give him another try anyway.
  4. I really wish I was above this, but apparently I'm not: yay!
  5. There's a great sketch comedy group here called Kasper Hauser, who do a thing called Phone Call to the 14th Century. The premise is that there's a game show where three people each get 30 seconds on the phone with a random person from the 14th century. The person who can convey the most information during his turn wins. The winner says something along the lines of "Yes, it's a talking machine, but don't worry about it. Just pay attention, I'm from the future. Wash your hands, a lot, and boil all your water before you drink it. If you keep cutting things into smaller and smaller pieces,

  7. Sure, it's possible to get it out in one day. But tapers have lives, too; you can't expect posting a show to be everyone's top priority. Also, just a reminder, VC's policy is to wait a week before requesting a show, for that very reason, to give the tapers a chance to collect themselves after a show. That policy is posted in the Trading forum, but maybe it should go over here too, since a lot of people do post requests here.
  8. Kyle, have you seen this? http://oncethemovie.com/
  9. He went to my college, I remember him as a very sweet, perpetually stoned freshman when I was a senior. It appears that time has been good to him.
  10. Lou, you might want to check out the performer who's there the week before, I think he'd be right up your alley: Howard Fishman The Basement Tapes Project at Steppenwolf
  11. There are hotels in the area, Lou, but you're definitely looking at driving and dealing with the hassle of parking (getting a spot, then getting out of the lot at the end of the night). Plus, anything halfway close and reasonably priced will be booked solid very early; and as you get farther away, you head towards Palm Springs, so the prices can get really high. Of course, I don't camp, so I don't even consider that to be a real option.
  12. You do need a separate login for the torrent tracker. Right now though, the tracker is inoperable. Check back periodically, it'll come back eventually.
  13. I've seen the live show a few times, and always laugh my ass off. The TV thing didn't impress me nearly as much, but I'm definitely going to give it a couple of chances before writing it off. Actually, first time I saw them, it took quite a while for me to decide that yes, these guys are hilarious. It's certainly a different feel to a show when you're there for a night out, and don't have the option of changing the channel. Which, I suppose, means that they really don't have much of a chance on TV.
  14. I love it that Kelly Leak is nominated for an Oscar. Long overdue, if you ask me.
  15. And such a great location! The SF Chronicle has a visitor's guide which is pretty good (http://www.sfgate.com/traveler/guide/) and I see that this month one of my favorite recommendations, the Precita Eyes mural walk, is one of their picks. If you're going to Golden Gate Park, you'll be in my neighborhood, the Inner Sunset. You'll enter the park at 9th Avenue to get to the Tea Garden, and right outside the park there is one of the best good/cheap eats neighborhoods in the city: http://www.sfgate.com/traveler/guide/sf/ne...nersunset.shtml Check out those guides to the Mission, Hayes Vall
  16. Be sure to book your tickets in advance for Alcatraz: http://www.alcatrazcruises.com/index.aspx And Angel Island is another nice day out on the bay: http://www.blueandgoldfleet.com/angelisland.htm http://www.angelisland.org/immigr02.html
  17. I'm both lazy and a bit rushed right now, so for now I'm just going to link to this other thread: http://forums.viachicago.org/index.php?sho...mp;hl=francisco Let us know how those suggestions sound to you, or if there was anything else you were interested in, and I'll tailor something just for you!
  18. These have been on the VC tracker a couple of times: http://bt.viachicago.org/details.php?id=641 (not available currently, unfortunately). I got them from Bridget, and if she says they're soundboard, that's good enough for me.
