  1. Well, Present Tense is a great song for most other bands, it bursts open in a magnificent way, I just set the PJ bar for a great song a bit higher :-P. It's not in my top 10% PJ songs. Yield and especially No Code are underrated albums though, they have a much more natural flow and cohesion than any of (what most people consider) the big three.
  2. There isn't a single factoid leaked from the new Spider-Man reboot that has convinced me this is anything but a disastrous undertaking. Well, it's been a while since Schumacher's batman & robin...:-[
  3. I was flabbergasted during the strike a while back that Conan or any other talk show host wasn't able to fill even a few minutes with improv or jokes they wrote themselves. That is after all how they started and have apparently forgot how to do. So very disappointed I was they've become completely dependent on their staff. I like the more relaxed format now, no more barrier between the audience and hopefully some more off-the-wall bits like the visit to the censor. I don't expect him to return to extremely zany stuff like on the old Late Night show, I think he was happy to abandon some of th
  4. I've always thought the hook-up between Jason Segel's and Linda Cardellini's character was extremly painful and a little heartbreaking, an exceedingly awkward and realistic portrayal of kids who don't know why the hell they're doing what they do sometimes and hurting each other as a consequence. I'm pretty sure this was mainly put in as a comedic arch, so I could be the only one. If you're mister glass-is-half-full: if f&g had run for ten seasons, so many great other comedy shows and films would never have been. Maybe it'd have been worth it, I don't know.
  5. I love the confident, laid back tone of this show, it's never predictable or repetitive, I love it's look (sun-burned photography, if you will) and Donal Logue is really strutting some extroardinary acting chops as the recovering alcoholic. Especially the last episode he was spectacular in my opinion, and so was the episode in all other aspects as a matter of fact. Granted, it's a bit of a cliche and one of those typical roles that fishes for awards, but that doesn't take anything away from the performance itself. To summarize: great show! I do hope it gets renewed because from what I gather i
  6. OT but hey, those are my headphones, ATH-M50 Porn for audiophiles. I loved Zooey more when she was still an underground indie movie queen, since 500 Days everyone has the hots for her and it's like she's an imaginary world slut.
  7. When you say "Present Tense" do you mean more recent songs? Cause the song is sort of okay at best.
  8. I'm gonna take this order and make a playlist for later today. Lately - Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan Guest Room - The National Honey Won't You Let Me In - The Tallest Man On Earth We Both Go Down Together Invisible - Josh Rouse Bienvenido - Josh Rouse Handshake Drugs - Wilco Gunshy - Liz Phair I'm a Humminbird - Eels Before Departure - PJ Harvey Don't Watch Me Dancing - Little Joy my iPod's memory is excellent, there are only two tracks among this selection I haven't played at least a dozen times this month.
  9. Neva Dinova -- I've Got a Feeling Bright Eyes -- I'll Be Your Friend Bob Dylan -- Three Angels Pavement -- Here Sonic Youth -- Hey Joni Charlotte Gainsbourg -- La Collection Sonic Youth -- No2, Pt.2 (the definition of unlistenable, and not that's not part of the song title in parenthesis). Dawn Landes -- Bodyguard Eels -- The Longing Frank Black -- Two Reelers Golden Smog -- V Nada Surf -- From Now On Was on a roll for about three songs before the jarring transition began. SY>Charlotte G>SY>Dawn Landes. Yikes.
  10. Excellent! Following up World Wide Suicide with Animal and Got Some should get the adrenaline flowing. Was really hoping to see Amongst the Waves instead of one of the early BSP singles though.
  11. The Hazards of Love came out in 09, time must seem long in your world . I actually think "The Hazards of Love 4 (The Drowned)" is greater than any track they ever released, even on Picaresque, but hearing the new song recorded with Gillian Welch, I must concur they're bound to return to their old mould. In any case, there's something to look forward to in Januari, concept album or no.
  12. Agreed, When "One Wing" bursts open it's the only time on the album I get that joyful feeling of softly exploding sparks in my gut like when a soft drizzle cools off a blistering hot summer day, barely being able to wet your skin before it evaporates again. SBS had plenty of songs that could cheer up any old boring day for me (Either Way, On and On and On, YAMF). With SBS they proved positive music could be interesting too, and with WTA they seem to try very hard to disprove that very same thing. I adore an acoustic version of LTYT, but I'm hard-pressed to agree the noise "ruins" the tra
  13. I stood right behind the girl with the dark hair in the back of the picture, straight in front of the camel-drum. Nice quality pictures, I still have to check mine for bluriness. I taped the Impossible Germany solo and a couple of fragments of some of my fav songs they did (Jesus etc, YAMF).
  14. I was one of the cherry ghosts tee's (if there were others) present, I'm probably a local compared to people who came from abroad but I traveled a good 90 minutes to get to the show location. I also noticed quite a few people with band merchandise and fans who knew a lot of lyrics in the first couple of rows, a little surprising considering the desolate location. I've a hard time pinpointing the level of atmosphere b/c you can't see back past the first couple of rows and the sound of the music blurts out a lot of audience reaction. Since they did the encore I assumed the applause at the end wa
  15. When I think about the less brilliant WTA it makes me look forward to the next album even more, after all wasn't AM followed by Being There? Uncle Tupelo's work was superior to AM but they got over that bump to make BT. I know this is flawed logic but to what degree can logic even be applied to the creative process?
  16. I really enjoyed the read, and it's true, their lyrics did get better after the making of MA.
  17. ² I have a feeling my close surroundings will have to fend off some "I'm kind of fun guy"s randomly interjected into conversations in the near future.
  18. BreadCrumb Trail - Spiderland (Slint) Go - VS (Pearl Jam) Summer Babe (Winter Version) - Slanted & Enchanted (Pavement) Misunderstood - Being There (Wilco) Marching Bands of Manhattan - Plans (Death Cab) Homecoming Queen - Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot (Sparklehorse) sorry to inject some post-90s music into this thread
  19. Well this has been an entertaining read, I came to check replies to my message and up until two days ago there were none and now this monster thread has accumulated in no time. Controversial and opposite standpoints appearantly have the effect of fast replies and rebutals. Back to the topic: Deeper Down is neither a throwaway track nor one I ever put on repeat. In that respect it's a lot like the whole album. I do think it's place is perfect, as usual the tracks were arranged expertly, even if a little bit of formula is applied. I would like to see a Wilco album start with a couple of slow h
  20. Hmm hate to be a bother but I don't live in the US so a zip code wouldn't do me any good. Can anyone post these since they're publically available anyway? EDIT: When I meant these, I meant most of them b/c I like pretty much all the artists and songs.
  21. I actually never really appreciated the outro to "Handshake Drugs". I don't think it adds much to the song. I think the best use of a song bursting out of it's chords would probably be VC, Poor Places or even IATTBYH but I'm not gonna go for the obvious ones b/c I have a soft spot for the outro of LTYT.
  22. I noticed the same narrative trick as in "She's a Jar". The insult of a kiss, the comfort of a kiss/ she begs me not to hit her, she begs me not to miss her. Other than that I think it's place on the album is logical, it's not dreamy and haunting enough for a last track, not hard rocking enough for an opener and if "One Wing" hadn't stood where it stands, it'd come right before BBN. Notice this would mean a great similarity between AGIB and WTA. ALTWYS/Hell is Chrome/Spiders WTS/Deeper Down/Bull Black Nova Deeper Down is definitely in the top half of WTA songs, but I wouldn't think twic
  23. Me too, love it, but Muzzle of Bees and Hell is Chrome clearly are the best AGIB tracks for me, I'll stick my hand in the fire for that. Wishful Thinking belongs in the sub-masterpieces of AGIB together with songs such as Theologians. Other songs on AGIB that are clearly superior to Wishful Thinking: Handshake Drugs, Company In My Back, Hummingbird, Less Than You Think. So that's a whole bunch of them right there. I will stick up for Please Be Patient With Me, as I suspect it gets as little love as LMLYFM, which I don't care for as much. On a side note (well everything before was a siden
