  1. I agree. A lot of his solo stuff is just a bit too out there (although I do like what he's doing with Julian Lage), but I love him in Wilco. It often seems to me that when people express dislike for Nels it's more a matter of preferring the Jay years than Nels' playing. I get that. I love both eras. I'm probably in the minority around here in that I really like all of Wilco's albums (yes, even WTA). I think there are maybe 3 or 4 songs in their whole catalog that I actually dislike.
  2. I know he was a big influence on that hack Robert Johnson! To me, Hendrix will always be the best for rock guitar. There are so many greats, though. Most genres have at least a few players who can make my head spin. Especially some of the fingerstyle guys. Mind blowing.
  3. You seem tense. It's all subjective. Personally, I find Clapton's playing boring and his songwriting uninspired. White boy blues personified. I think a lot of people - certainly a lot of players - hold Clapton up as great because it's just always kind of been accepted. There were/are many far better players from his own era to present who leave him in the dust both technically and from a songwriting standpoint. I think he'd be the first to admit it.
  4. I don't know if putting in a bone nut will help your problem, but it will definitely improve tone & sustain. If you think the nut might be an issue, an easy fix is to clean out the grooves and then gently rub a sharpened pencil in each one. The graphite helps. I'd still recommend switching tuners, though. Cheap & easy.
  5. The new album is streaming here: http://www.theguardian.com/music/2013/oct/21/white-denim-corsicana-lemonade-album-stream It sounds really good.
  6. Well the music's what matters, and clearly you love it. I'm not going to shit all over that. For what it's worth, my wife LOVES The Clash. We've had this same discussion several times and are somehow still happily together.
  7. I get that. Unfortunately it's more fun in person. It's hard to convey tone on a message board. Things are easily misconstrued. The boy band thing? It mostly matters because Strummer was always celebrated for his authenticity, and I think allowing himself to be part of an assembled, marketed product kind of ran directly counter to that.
  8. I don't think it's "wrong" to dislike any artist. The Clash annoy me. Simple as that. They were assembled by a manager like a boy band and chose a punk image. I think a lot of their acclaim is undeserved. It's only my opinion (as I stated in my very first post on this thread). I didn't mean that anyone else should share it. For all the arguing about this stuff, it's worth remembering that most of us probably share a lot of common ground musically. Why get too hung up on the ones we don't agree on?
  9. Find yourself a good luthier and take it in for a setup. That should fix the intonation. Gibson's quality control is pretty much non-existent anymore, so the factory setup is probably awful. As for the tuning, Bosco nailed it. Stock tuners on Gibsons are crap. The G in particular is always problematic. You can find a set of Grovers on Amazon for around $40 and install them yourself in about 15 minutes. They look just like the stock tuners but are far better. Trust me, I've done this on all of my Gibsons. You'll be glad you did. Good luck!
  10. Sorry - I realize that sounded a bit dickish. I was thinking more back to my teenage years when people would claim to like punk based on their owning a Clash album. Kind of like the metal girls whose favorite band was Poison. No offense was intended toward Clash fans.
  11. I'm with you. They always seemed like "punk" for people who didn't quite know what punk was. Give 'em Enough Rope came close.
  12. Off the top of my head: Pavement Foxygen The Doors Elvis Eric Clapton The Grateful Dead The Beach Boys Steely Dan I'm aware that there are some sacred cows on my list. Not saying some of these bands haven't had their moments. Just my opinion.
  13. I was wondering the same thing, but I'll get it anyway. If it's even close to as good as the Massey Hall show it'll be worth it.
  14. It's difficult for me to pick a favorite. I love them all for different reasons. I guess it would be between The Royal Tenenbaums and The Life Aquatic, but I'll always have a soft spot for Bottle Rocket. And Rushmore. Man, they're all great, aren't they? It's like picking a favorite Beatles song.
  15. Hollywood Town Hall by The Jayhawks. In it's entirety.
  16. Dr. Dog! I've been hearing the name for years, but actually listened to them for the first time last night. Wow!! Is all their stuff this good? I feel a binge coming on.
  17. The sound for the Wilco show at the Bushnell last year was the best I've ever heard anywhere. Beautiful place, too. It was my first time there. Back in the old days it was always the Civic Center. And yes, Hartford really is an awful shithole.
  18. Yeah, and as we mentioned above, it was a really late show. I wouldn't worry about it though, it's not a big college town.
  19. Maybe. It's sad to think any music fan would miss a good concert in favor of watching something on television, though.
