Indeed. The title track is one of my all time favorites from any band.

Couch Tour Alert | Austin City Limits Weekend Two Webcast
worldrecordplayer replied to ditty's topic in Just A Fan
hmm, wife will be away, I have plans to join a bunch of friends for dinner (in the eastern time zone). Now I see this. Do I stay home and couch potato for Wilco and The Cure, or do I go out? My friends invited me to join them, so no issue if I change my mind. Decisions decisions. -
Yes, that is Donna. Whose singing generates a lot of mixed feelings among the Heads. I've always been in the Donna camp, have always felt I'm in a minority position on that. The GD station plays a wide variety of Dead eras in my (extensive) experience. Sometimes when the do "Today in GD History", they may play parts of the same show over several days, which may be why you caught onto a '77 run.

Oh man, I love a good matrix. Getting the energy and vibe of the audience mixed in with the soundboard is a perfect combination for me. Especially with '90's Dead soundboards, they can be so sterile.
-
There was that long piece in the New Yorker last year about Deadhead tapers, and it was very much focused on this show.

Dave's Picks Vol. 8 just announced, this is a good one, Fox Theater, Atlanta, 11-30-80 http://www.jambase.com/Articles/119610/Grateful-Dead-Dave%27s-Picks-Volume-8-Details-Emerge#39;s-Picks-Volume-8-Details-Emerge

A bunch of my friends were there and loved the show. I didn't ask about the Wolf guitar.

Egypt would not be on my list of shows to recommend. Other than that, your list looks good, can't go wrong with '72, but I would be remiss if I didn't strongly encourage at least one May '77 show. Required listening.

Before the Wilco/Bushnell show, my concert history in Hartford was limited to the Civic Center and Colt Park. All for Dead shows.
-
So I take it you've never seen the movie. Yes, you will get a hefty dose of stage banter mixed in with weird Acid Trips footage and other nonsense. You will likely be impatient with the beginning of the movie, which has Playing in the background while the stage is being setup and folks roll into town, mixed in with the archival Pranksters footage. Takes several minutes to get to the actual concert, but hang in there, your patience will be worth it.
-
My prediction: you will delve into Europe '72, and that will be the start of a long and beautiful love affair
-
My enthusiasm for this is based on my (uninformed) assumption that it would mostly be a SS concert film. Less interested in a documentary about the making of SS than I am about re-living the performances of SS, though no doubt I would buy it either way.
-
I hear you, but all that Ken Babs and Wavy Gravy stage banter about water stuff and sun and heat were part of the experience of the day, so I don't have any problem with them leaving that stuff in. Like the stage announcements in the Woodstock soundtrack, adds to the experience of the day. A reminder that this was not your ordinary GD show.

This recently popped up on You Tube. Just looked at the first few seconds, the audio quality is very good. This is from the period I was "off the bus", so will give this a full look from home sometime soon. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnMxvi9WYIU&feature=player_embedded#t=0

Wondering about a Solid Sound documentary. There were definitely professional video set ups at each performance stage this year. That could be the next Wilco sighting.
-
Anyhow, that was my first show at the Bushnell. I've been in Boston for 32 years, never even heard of it. What a beautiful room and great acoustics. This was the night after the benefit show in the Hunter Center at MassMoca, where i thought the sound was not so good.

I like the Royale as a room for music, big space, lots of bars, has an upstairs too. Used to be called something else in the '80's, the Roxy maybe, I remember an intense Gang of Four show there. I've seen a few shows there over the last couple of years, Karl Denson and Anders doing Sticky Fingers, Heartless Bastards, etc., and the room has never been more than half filled. Then I see photos of the DJ shows they put on there, and the place always looks like its packed to the rafters. Wilco didn't sell out the Bushnell during the summer 2012? I was at that show, looked filled to me.
-
Crap, missed it. Really like that venue also, good room for music.

In Boston? Where?

Me too, anything from '72-73, my favorite period. Loving SSDD. I've always had the audio and movie, nice to get improved versions of both irregardless of the cost.
-
I got the May '77 box, and the SSDD box as well. I try to forget how much I spent on the May box, so thanks for reminding me Main reason I bought it was because I was at the St. Louis show, and I never had a good copy of that one. I usually feel compelled to buy any show I was at, though I don't always get around to it. Dollars aside, the May '77 box is fantastic. For starters, it's May '77, so enough said right there. The quality of the audio is superb. And the box itself and booklet are well done. I'm glad I have it.

A very good read. This is how I spend my Saturday night with the brand new dvd/cd box set. I had a blast! This to me is the Dead at their peak. Watching the Dead in the blazing sun in front of all those Oregon/west coast 1972 hippies, it’s magic. I knew from his FB post that Renaldo went to the theatrical release night, which should have told me how much he was into the Dead’s music, but this leaves no doubt.
