I would have liked to have heard him. Masterful fingerpicking guitar man Jorma on Thursday night, would have been nice to go back to back nights with Gunn.
-
I was there, last minute call. My experience was different. Missed Gunn. Didn't think Ranaldo was all that good. Not that familiar with all his stuff, but really didn't like the new songs, which I was hearing for the first time. Last/first time I saw him Lee Ranaldo Band, in summer of 2012 opening for Wilco in Hartford I was blown away. Had no expectations, hadn't heard any of the new album and ended up liking all those songs a lot. Was surprised how empty it was there. And then to cap it off, at the end of the night, found my car had been towed.

The Allmans having been a "tribute band" over these last many years is so far from my reality I don't even know where to start. And there's no point trying to convince, or arguing about it. Plus, if I started I'd spend all day on it and I have work to do. So, I'll just respectfully disagree and enjoy the music.

They just keep on Truckin. Jorma's acoustic picking still never ceases to amaze.

Great show by the Tuna boys. If I had to choose back in the day, I'd always prefer electric Tuna. But over the years, Jorma's electric playing leaves me a little frustrated as I don't feel the electric sparks flying off the fretboard like I used to. But there's nothing about his acoustic playing that doesn't leave me as blown away as when I first saw them acoustic almost 40 years ago at the Academy of Music. Me too, I think. Don't have a ticket yet.

I've had zillions of great concert experiences, but the thrill of being in the Beacon when Clapton came out on stage to play a blistering set with the Allmans may be the pinnacle. Sad to hear that Warren and Derek are departing, but thankful for the many great evenings in the company of this band. http://www.jambase.com/Articles/120385/Throwback-Thursday-Allman-Brothers-Band-With-Eric-Clapton

I cannot fathom that the ABB will continue beyond 2014 with a new guitar lineup. Seems ridiculous to me. But, I do note that Warren and Derek's announcements were not accompanied by any announcement by the Band that 2014 will be there 45th and final year, so we shall see.

So Warren announces his departure from the Allmans, and then goes out and delivers this "solo" set on Jam Cruise. The guy is always amazing. http://www.jambase.com/Articles/120403/Jam-Cruise-Journal-Warren-And-Friends-Brew-Bahamian-Lemonade

I'm holding out hope for some non-festival touring.

One of those headlines that doesn't surprise, but still hits me in the gut. I've always felt fortunate for all the nights I've spent getting to hear Warren and Derek on the same stage in front of that rhythm section. I'll be sure to catch at least one Beacon show this year after missing the last 2 years. That whole thing with Oteil is now even weirder with this news. Zakk Wylde...heaven forbid

Steve Barncard won't like reading that. Anyhow, he was experienced with the Dead and all the SF PERRO players at Wally Heiders. I may have already written it here, but my MOFI vinyl of Wake is the best sounding music I own.
-
That's a riot, that's how I felt at Great Woods. I would have thought that Zakk Wylde was within your orbit of musicians (shows how limited my knowledge of the metal scene is).
-
But how do you ignore the fact that the band that was propping him up was doing so while playing many songs that he wrote? Many of rock's classics? Sheesh, give the man his due. And I always thought that Dickey was the ignorant hick in the band, especially after he ended up in jail for beating up his girlfriend/wife after a gig in Albany.
-
Well then you have every right to criticize, in my view. Without question. Me, I don't know what I would do, so without having walked in those shoes I've mellowed a bit over the years on Gregg's choice.
-
Lots of hating on Brother Gregg around here. I can't pile on. I was generally familiar with the drug bust story, but have forgotten most of it. It was a long time ago. Yea, he gave information that put his friends in jail and he saved himself. Not the first person to do that. It's easy to criticize, but the pressure must have been tremendous. Thankfully I've never had to make such a choice. Wonder how everyone who is quick to criticize would handle that. Anyway, not defending him for it, I was also in the "he's a narc" camp at the time, but it was a long time ago and I don't hold it a

I have the MOFI vinyl of Wake of the Flood, it sounds terrific.

Just finished watching the movie Muscle Shoals. Highly recommended. Donna is one of the musicians interviewed in the film. I never knew she sang on Percy Sledge's When A Man Loves A Woman. I always knew she sang with Elvis, but never knew she was a Muscle Shoals singer as well. Ironic that with those accomplishments she went on to grate on many a Deadhead's ear ( not mine). First, Butch was most likely accurate with his comments about the Dead in '95. Can't fault him for that. Second, I had no idea Dickey brought Franklin's into the Blue Sky jam. I always assumed Warren was responsible for that, thanks for that nugget.

Not "settled" in the sense of officially announced. But that is the general sense of the world. Like I said, they did promise an official announcement after the new year.
-
This is so funny to me: every lick the guy plays is stunning, so I don't like listening to him play! Hilarious. I agree, everything he plays is stunning, which is why I can listen to him play all night. And to have the chance to see him play right next to Warren is a treat. I will take issue with there not being any buildup in his solos. His solos often start slow and quiet and build to a blazing crescendo. The thing about Derek that freaks me out is his right hand, playing with no pick and just 1 or 2 fingers. Yes, but I attribute that to Warren. Just my sense of things.

Hmmm....not familiar with that site, is it reliable?

Wilco commented in a FB post (I think in a Tweedy set list comment) that they would have news about Solid Sound after the holidays. OK, it's now after the holidays and we're patiently waiting!
