Wondering if any VC'ers are in the house during this run, and if so how Gregg is doing. I thought Gregg was in terrible performance shape during the 3 shows I saw at the Orpheum in November. Wondering whether he's risen above, or more of the same.

Well, turns out that I actually saw The Slip many years ago at Great Woods. Just this morning I was telling my buddy about the Barr Brothers and said that they came out of The Slip, and he reminded me that we saw them open for someone at Great Woods. I had no idea. He remembered because the bass player looked just like another friend of ours. That I remember. And I remembered we liked the band. I had no memory that it was The Slip. My mind is a terrible thing to waste.

I don't know if it's the same. The Terrapin Station I was referring to was a dial up bulletin board, pre www.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'm on it.

No, but will check it out. My only knowledge of The Slip is that when I went to Newbury Comics to get the Barr Brothers album after seeing the Letterman clip, they couldn't find it at first, but then found it in The Slip section.

Jeff & Nels interview in Guitarworld

"We want to transport people. Because it's a beautiful thing to be able to have music take you somewhere." Mission accomplished, I'd say. But keep it going guys. -
I spent years searching for the best quality recording of this show that I could find, and my search took me to many places and made me a very good friend to this day. I was able to upgrade my audience cassettes to the soundboard recording in late '91 by way of the old Terrapin Station bbs, run by Cap'n Trips out of CT. This was before I found the WELL.

FYI, there's a very good Lazy Lightening>Supplication on the new Dave's Pick release.

It's the old Harper's Ferry. This was my introduction to The Barr Brothers, thanks to the tip from the good people at Hidden Track: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=boHhpY4_SEs&feature=youtube_gdata_player

The famous Jerry birthday show. I wasn't there for that one. Saw them there in '74 and '76. I don't think they ever did anything other than outstanding shows at Roosevelt Stadium. The place was a total pit. But we were outside.

Me too. Excellent first album. Anyone who likes The King is Dead should definitely check them out. Seeing them at a small club in Brighton MA in May, looking forward to that.

Smallest venue? Off the top of my head, would have to be a theater show: the Beacon shows in June '76, or the Uptown Theater in Chicago in November '78, or the Capital in Pasaic in '77 or '78. Saw some Jerry and Merle shows in smaller venues. Best show? That's a tough one. If I had to answer, would go with my first GD show, 8-6-74 Roosevelt Stadium, Jersey City. With one of those Uptown shows from November '78 coming a close second for the magic of it all. The single best GD *set* I ever saw was the second set, MSG, 9-20-90. I don't know if I've ever had my mind blown like that night

Hah! Wish I could I was in college in St. Louis from 75-79, so I saw a lot of mid-west GD shows during that period: Cincy, Indy, Chicago, Iowa, Illinois, St. Louis. Most of which I can remember and tell you at least one story about. But this is one that I have only the vaguest recollection of, but I've got it marked that I was there.

I was there.

Got my Dave's Pick Vol. 1 today (5-25-77), and that Half Step opener is killer. Looking forward to hearing the second set.

Wilco songs they play that you don't want them to
worldrecordplayer replied to lamradio's topic in Just A Fan
From someone who is most definitely a dad, I am glad to hear that. -
'77, particularly the first half of the year, no doubt an awesome period for the Dead. The general consensus is correct about that. One of my favorites from May '77 is the Buffalo show, 5-9-77,the night after the highly rated Barton Hall show. I like the Buffalo show better, particularly the killer first set. The opening Help>Slip>Franklin's may be the best I've ever heard, the set closing Music is off the hook, and in between the entire set is awesome. Jerry!

Wilco songs they play that you don't want them to
worldrecordplayer replied to lamradio's topic in Just A Fan
Just wondering how many times a year are you folks seeing Wilco? How many shows a year is the average VC'er catching? I'm used to this topic in the GD/Phish world, where lots of folks saw entire tours or large chunks of tours, winter, spring, summer and fall. There were always rumblings about not another Black Peter, NFA, etc. I never thought of Wilco as having that kind of road following beyond a very small number of folks. Personally, the 1, 2 or 3 Wilco shows I may see a year doesn't put me in the position of getting tired of hearing any of their songs. It's an amazingly great catalog -

Now that's something on which YMMV, very much so. Mine varies. I imagine that topic has been debated endlessly around these parts. -

None. I see Wilco maybe 2-3 times per year, so there are no bathroom break songs for me. -
This morning, "I Must Be High", on my phone. My new ringtone

Just random tunes, alternating. It's on a playlist on my iPod, which is now dead as a doornail. If I recall, the idea of a Beatles and Wilco playlist came from reading a blog post by Dale Murphy.

Weekdays, my listening is in the car or on the train to and from work. 90% of the time I'm listening to a live show (must be the old Deadhead in me, but I always gravitate to live performances), although TWL got more play time than any other studio release that I can recall. At home on weekends, a mix between playing vinyl, so the studio releases plus Kicking Television box set, live shows on disc or iPod, and watching concert footage (ACL, or Ashes DVD, or YouTube videos). Sometimes I play a Beat-Co playlist i put together, the Beatles and Wilco work fantastically well together.

I have the Santa Barbara show. A friend who was there sent me the link to it, was not on bt.etree. Have it on my computer at work so if you are still looking for it send me a message and I will hook you up.

3/4th or talking heads waiting on a call
worldrecordplayer replied to IRememberDBoon's topic in Someone Else's Song
Can't decide whether the Heads or Ramones hold this title, so I'll call it a draw. Either way, they were an epic groundbreaking band.
