  1. Being a big Courtney Barnett fan, and given that New Speedway Boogie is among my favorite Dead tunes, I've listened to that track several times. My take is that Courtney makes that song her own, it is not by any means a copycat rendition. Well let's cure that. Give it a listen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=72OLupNWNho Warms my heart
  2. My then 24 year old son turned me on to her when he got his hands on a pre-release leaked copy of Sometimes I Sit and Think...He had been listening to her for a while already and claims he had already played Avant Gardner for me, but I must not have been focused. I love it when the wheel turns round.
  3. From the soon to be released Day of the Dead tribute album, they released the full track of Courtney's performance of New Speedway Boogie. Giving one of my favorite GD tunes the Courtney Barnett treatment, sounds great. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XdaAQlmExmI
  4. They released some full tracks on the website. Here's Courtney Barnett doing New Speedway. Grateful Dead music + Courtney + New Speedway = pretty much hitting the trifecta for me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XdaAQlmExmI
  5. Couldn't make it to House of Blues for Lake Street Dive tonight, but I have friends coming over to watch the free webcast on Yahoo Music. I saw Rachel Price sing at Lockn' last year, but I've never seen LSD (a very funny thing for me to say)
  6. Bill Walton just released a memoir, "Back from the Dead." http://liveforlivemusic.com/news/bill-walton-has-released-a-memoir-titled-back-from-the-dead/
  7. Hope you had as good a time last night as I did on Monday. I've seen Lu many times. I went into Monday's show less psyched than at any previous show, mostly because I wasn't familiar with the new album and the few tracks I heard seemed too slow and morose. Another instance of low expectations leading to great reward. As this reviewer wrote: "It was spectacular." http://www.bostonherald.com/entertainment/music/guestlisted/2016/03/last_best_show_lucinda_williams_at_the_paradise
  8. Had some home alone time today, took the opportunity to play D3 of Dave's Picks 17, Fresno, July 1974, the first official Wall of Sound show, at concert level volume. I've listened to this show many times over the years, but I never realized how tight and rockin the US Blues is. The entire show is worthy no doubt, today for the first time US Blues jumps out and slapped me in my face and stuck me in the gut. I can't help but repeat myself about these GD HDCD releases, they sound amazing.
  9. Barrence has not stopped playing, and I understood he's back performing with the Savages, but there were a number of years when he was solo, and that night in Johnny D's was the "final" BW and Savages show. Or perhaps I'm confusing this with something else (but I don't think so). I will get confirmation. My favorite Barrence moments are at just about every Lobos show in Boston when he jumps on stage for DIrty Water, like this show I was at in Salsbury, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIcNyUiRilE, or Georgia Slop, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvffXTjUEZU
  10. Nice, sounds like an awesome band. I've never been much of a Black Crowes or CRB fan. I got a ticket to see the Foundations of Funk show here in Boston, which is George Porter, Jr., Zig, Krasno and Neal Evans. Looking forward to that one.
  11. Came upon this video of Ryan Adams doing an acoustic Wharf Rat. Fantastic version. He introduces the song by saying: "When I'm feeling sort of out of place, or not feeling great, I listen to the Grateful Dead." I bet all of us here can relate. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4TrOK1L8xQ
  12. I like almost all of those "last batch" tunes, with Days being at the top of my list. Never really took a shine to Liberty. A little too cheesy for my tastes. "Ooh ooh, Liberty..." I saw a couple of versions of Days that were spine tingling. Great imagery in the lyrics, and Jerry could belt out those lyrics to kick my in the gut.
  13. I didn't get there as frequently as I would have liked, but I did make sure I caught a show before it closed, the Modeski Trio about a month or so ago. My buddy got the head's up on the Neil appearance and called me, I couldn't get out of the office but he made it over in the afternoon and got in. We stumbled in one night several years ago with friends and unbeknownst to us it was the "final" Barrence Whitfield and the Savages show.
  14. Good point, same experience for me. I got Hundred Year Hall when it was first released and it instantly snapped my head around and went straight to the top of my charts of favorite GD releases. Pretty much every track is a "best version" or close to it for me. So when they released individual shows from the Europe '72 box, this is the one full show i bought. And for some reason, I don't find it as compelling a listen as HYH. It must be the mix. But whatever the reason, I go to HYH more often than I go to the full show release.
  15. The full track listing was announced. 59 tracks. Unbelievable list of artists and songs. Wilco w/Bob Weir live Courtney Real Estate The War on Drugs Flaming Lips Kurt Vile Jim James The National The Walkmen Grizzly Bear Angel Olsen Local Natives Phosphorescent TV on the Radio Perfume Genius Bela Fleck etc. etc. I am super excited for this release, check it out: http://dayofthedeadmusic.com/ http://dayofthedeadmusic.com/downloads/DOTD_Digital-Booklet.pdf
  16. The track listing to this release is unbelievable. Can't wait. Deserves its own topic.
  17. Turns out we started watching the primary coverage and I never got to this. I would like to buy it and watch it over the weekend if they do that. Phil with Warren and Krasno hits my sweet spot. I'm less of a Herring fan.
  18. At about the 5 minute mark of Lemieux's Seaside Chat, he goes into an explanation of getting the original master reels back in the vault. They did a deal with the guy who had ownership of them, who was not Betty.
  19. I think I'm going to couch tour the Phil Lesh show, with Warren and Krasno.
  20. Just announced, the July 1978 Betty Boards official box set release: http://www.dead.net/store/1970s/july-1978-complete-recordings?intcmp=home/carousel1 I had those Red Rocks shows on cassette years ago, I always thought they were great, haven't heard the others in this box.
  21. That's a solid list, I wouldn't disagree with anything on there. Without looking at the discography, a few off the top of my head additions from my collection: Winterland '73 box set (I'm partial to '73), a great companion to the Winterland '77 box Dick's Picks, 1973 Boston Music Hall GD Movie box set May '77 box set Dick's Pick from Columbus OH, Halloween 1971. I think its DP #2. A single disc, awesome show Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fillmore East April '71 4 disc set The Nassau Coliseum, Branford Marsalis spring 1990 show
  22. Johnny D's has been a landmark music honkytonk club and restaurant in Somerville for 47 years. It is shutting its doors for good on Sunday, going out in style with a free show and then a Second Line parade. The Boston Globe has some great coverage of the closing, including a sidebar piece of various people sharing their memories. Included is this memory from Brian Rosenworcel of Guster, recalling seeing Wilco there while he was still mourning the Tupelo breakup: BRIAN ROSENWORCEL, Guster We would stop at Johnny D’s regularly, first as the opener and eventually as a headliner — I mean, it
