  1. My dad just forwarded an email he got about this yesterday from the fan club. He and I used to go a show at the Beacon every year for a while until I moved out of the NY area. Its a bummer for sure, but the tone of the email didn't sound too bad--more like he's recovering well and resting up. Here's the text of it:
  2. Wow, nice one. That song was pretty annoying, but that was actually a really good record.
  3. I'll go with Jimmy Buffett. He seems to be pretty popular around here lately.
  4. I dunno, the press seems to love McCain. Dude, he's a "maverick", remember? How awesome! Its true that at this point in the race he seems like kind of an afterthought. He really isn't getting a ton of attention right now, and what he does get seems to be a lot of fluff stories. As the Dem campaign drags on and continues to gets nastier, a fair amount of people will get fatigued and turned off by it. McCain is undoubtedly hoping to lay low and ride the backlash. Not that its all negative for the Dems, though. At least they have two strong candidates--why not let them battle it out to
  5. Same reason people love to hate Dave Matthews. On its own, the music itself is safe and inoffensive enough that its hard to understand anybody getting too worked up about it. But its the standard backlash for any artist who is perceived to be more popular than their music warrants: "OMG, I can't believe people like this crap when there is obviously so much superior music out there." I dunno. I can think of plenty of acts that annoy me more than Jack Johnson. I can think of plenty that are better, too. I guess I'm kind of indifferent. Then why am I still posting in this thread? Shit, a
  6. Someone gave me a copy of his first album many years ago and it's listenable in small doeses. I'd probably tend to think of it as background music, but as such it is generally okay. I don't play it often, but I can somewhat understand the guy's popularity. Headlining a major festival seems a bit of a stretch, although I can't really picture Wilco in that spot either. By the way, if anybody out there knows WTF bubbly toes are, could you please fill me in? Thank you.
  7. Buffett actually had a fairly okay run of albums going on prior to his one hit. The fact that he built an empire off the success of that one song while never releasing a decent album again is what is amazing. For my one hit wonder, I'm gonna go with Primitive Radio Gods' "Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth with Money in My Hand". I heard that on the radio the other day for the first time in about a decade.
  8. Oh, sorry. I didn't know they still had a team there.
  9. At least you people climbing ladders are getting some exercise.
  10. You're going to have to be more specific. There were a number of them. But I'm assuming you're referring to John Kruk. I could only dare to dream to be so awesome.
  11. Heh. I was just going to ask why couldn't it have been the breakfast burrito inventor instead? Vomitrocious, indeed.
  12. ...and another little tally mark goes next to your name somewhere in your company's database.
  13. I would like to take this opportunity to point out that the Boston Red Sox currently have the longest losing streak in baseball. Whew. That felt good.
  14. I wish the Orioles would go to Japan. And stay there.
  15. Fantastic news. Give me baseball on Sirius and let me use XMs satellites to hopefully improve my shitty reception and I might actually not cancel my service after all!
  16. Whenever I saw Fugazi I was always mildly worried about being scolded from the stage for not acting properly in the audience, even though I wasn't really doing anything. I should probably add Wilco to this list. I've seen a few mosh pits get out of control, but none immediately come to mind. The most I've ever felt myself to be in physical danger was, strangely enough, watching Rancid play a Warped Tour show. It was hardly a "scary" environment--bunch of suburban kids getting to act like punks for a day in a stadium parking lot. Or maybe that was the problem. I just remember the crush
  17. Oh, you didn't get invited to the other bracket? (kidding) When I logged in I just saw the first screen showing the top ten and I saw my name at the bottom. Okay, so I stand corrected--I'm 34th place right now, which is a vast improvement! Of course, in my work bracket where there is actual money on the line I had Georgetown winning it all, so uhhh...
  18. Well, this is about the worst I have ever done on my brackets. (I made 3 or 4 of them this year and my VC bracket is in the best shape...and I'm in last place) Next year I make my picks based on jersey color and/or mascots.
  19. Electr-O-Pura is my favorite. To me, it beats I Can Hear the Heart by quite a bit, although the conventional wisdom seems to disagree with that. ...Inside Out is also top-notch, but was a slow-grower for me, so I wouldn't recommend starting there. I like some of the atmosphere of Summer Sun, but it is kind of inconsistent. Same for Painful, imo. Every album seems to have some gems on it, though. I love YLT, but strangely have never gotten around to seeing them live. They're definitely on the "Gee, I hope they don't quit before I get a chance to see them" list.
  20. I agree. I'm in the same boat as a (relative) latecomer to the band and I don't read rock books much at all, either, so a lot of the material was new to me. In parts it did feel like Phil was skimming over things, but I doubt I ever would have gotten through a longer book. And I bought this for under $5 at the local overstock books store. I probably never would have bought it, otherwise.
  21. So how is it? I didn't care for Vol 1 much at all and it kind of turned me off of the whole Road Trips concept. Of course that opinion could change if the next one is killer.
